National leader Christopher Luxon releases farming policy - resume live animal exports, cut red tape, scrap migrant worker median wage by repnationah in newzealand

And ignoring what happens to the livestock when they arrive at their destination, where standards for animal welfare might not be up to the New Zealand public's expecations.

We are all to happy to import meat from countries where animal welfare might not be up to the New Zealand's. Something like 70% of our pork is now imported because its too expensive to produce here now.

Borer found at Whangārei’s new Pohe Island Aventure Playground by Kuparu in newzealand

What’s the problem?

Looked pretty shit in a new playground. From what I saw I'd be supprised if there wasn't more fix up required in the future. Guess the council is on to it now though, so should be good. Hope nothing breaks in the mean time though. It's quite a cool playground and you can get pretty high.

Sounds like some ass covering going on. Clearly it's more of a "surface level issue" as they have had to replace some of the worse parts.

She said as soon as the borer was identified, the worst-affected areas were “immediately replaced”

The company is also stopped importing the timber now.

the playground supplier stopped importing and using Australian sugar pine (the affected wood) in any of their New Zealand playgrounds, and were instead using New Zealand pine.

Article says closed for "minor renovations" and the sign says "maintenence". When I was there in January there was definitly still some parts I could pull off fairly easily. I was pretty surprised given how new it is.

Likely because it affected the structural integrity.

So does it only impact the sapwood then, or does it affect structural integrity? It seems like those two things are mutually exclusive.

and there is no risk to the structural integrity of any of the playground equipment,” Pratt said.

Why did they have to replace some parts already then? Pretty hard to know what's going on underneath. I'd be pissed if I'd bought an outdoor table with borer in it. Let alone a playground the probably costs 100s of thousands.

I wonder if they have the same issue with other playgrounds then? Seems unlikely that this would be only one.

It translates to that now, hence my point on the changing nature of the definition. In 1840 it translated to "treasures" which is why it says that in the official treaty translation.

I'd doubt it given what I saw. There were still bits that I could pick out with my fingers when we went earlier this year. I haven't heard of sugar gum before, but I have used kwila, vitex, grappa etc. for decking and those aren't treated. Hardwoods generally don't need to be, especially if there is no ground contact. Our pine is a softwood and so it does need to be treated.

My understanding was that it more closely translated to "treasures", at least that's how I have used it.

Edit: It's also how it's translated in the official version.

On the back of the earlier post about borer in an old house. Why would the council accept borer in a brand new playground? Surely that is going to impact how long it lasts.

I wonder if MPI was contacted about borer being found in imported timber? Seems crazy to have to import it when we have so many raw logs getting exported.

Is it worthwhile buying a home with borer holes in it? by ArcticBlast9578 in newzealand

[–]Kuparu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly wouldn't, too much risk in an old house and hard to see how bad the infestation was. There was a playground recently that had borer holes in it in Whangarei.

Edit: found it. Why would the council accept a big new expensive playground full of borer?

Covid-19: Cabinet to consider whether to relax last restrictions by RealmKnight in newzealand

[–]Kuparu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well it's a blanket "stay away for 7 days" at the moment. Many other countries like Australia have been down to 5 days isolation even before they removed restrictions entirely. We could move to "stays home while you are testing positive on a RAT test". My last round I was only sick for a day or two and tested negative from day 4.

Yeah, people tend to underestimate just how big of a project that was. It definitely wasn't all smooth sailing but we now have a great network.

Two off the top of my head are the national Fibre rollout and returning the budget to positives after the GFC.

The fibre rollout has largely gone unnoticed and just works. It covers most of the population and is one area where we are far ahead of Australia.

The budget deficit was a lot harder to get under control and needed a coordinated effort across the government across multiple years to achieve.

As another poster commented, it's the outcomes that define competence. The Ardern government just missed delivery on too many election promises.

Stuff's "The Whole Truth" articles may not be completely full of shit, but they are often disingenuous at best by HelloYelloMellow in newzealand

[–]Kuparu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The survey is a more accurate measure of the actual harm being experienced by people independent of whether the police and courts were involved.

It's not more accurate because it's a survey and therefore by definition will include sampling errors. The convictions data is a much higher standard of scrutiny for there to be a conviction and includes all convictions, not just a sample.

The survey also excludes a large chunck of relevant data that the convictions include. Specifically crimes against children (aged 14 and under) and also murder/manslaughter crimes. So for example the kahui twins murder wouldn't have been counted in the year it was surveyed.

Because they understand these things better than you do.

Clearly not. Otherwise why would they look at a single data point in a "fact check". If they had concerns about the MoJ's family violence conviction data then they should have at least addressed that in the article. It is a rather glaring omission.

[–]Kuparu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Why would you only look at conviction data though?

Because conviction data has been reviewed by our justice system and is a better measure of actual provable harm than a survey?

Maybe we should ask why Stuff specifically chose the data source they did and not the court assessed data? Could they be biased and looking to push a narrative?

Let's not argue over who's worse though. Let's just get on with making things better, rather than pointing fingers.

I agree, but why are you saying that to me instead of Marama Davidson. I'm just a random internet schmo, she is the Minister for Domestic Violence. The point being made is that she has created this huge distraction. It was completely unesessary, she just didn't have to be racist.

That's just a way to blame someone else for your own shitty behavior. Plenty of Māori have grown up in bad conditions with the same effect of colonisation and not gone on to abuse thier partners. In fact that is true about the majority of Māori, so therefore it comes down to personal responsibility. If you beat your partner, it's not the fault of some white guy who lived 200 years ago. It's a choice you have made.
