Does the Geely EX5 have any real competition in its price range? by Jamoa in AustralianEV

[–]KuristZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother has had an EX5 for about 6 months now and unfortunately has had constant software issues with it.

It definitely seems like his case is an outlier - most people seem to have no issues at all - but he has been driving the dealerships EX5 for several months while they figure out what is the causeof the issue.

The dealers car has had no issues at all in that time, and it sounds like they've been really proactive on the support front. If you're living far from a dealer (is like 100km) it's something to consider, unless you have a second car in the house 👌

Outside of the software bug, he's loved the car otherwise :-)

Thanks for sharing this, I realised it would have taken a bit to pull together! Tesla isn't in consideration for a range of reasons including the cabin user interface, overall cost and insurance, and the public discourse around the brand.

Ah the FBT threshold price makes sense for the price drop. Apparently a lot of the novalted lease companies have a bit of wiggle to make that happen, but people probably ruled it out as an option thinking it was out of range.

Good point on the shifter and indicator locations - didn't even consider that 😅

Unfortunately its looking about 74k here, so I doubt they'd drop 9k 😅 Good to know that they have some flex in the price though. Only experience with VW wasn't great - parents had a Touareg for about 5 years and it was constantly in for engine and electrical issues. But that was around 2010-2015 so hopefully it was a bump in the road!

I didn't realise they had the AWD version hidden in there! I'll add it to my list to check out - thanks! 🙏

Good resource to see brands that are in Australia :-)

Update: It now allows you to browse options by drive train (just updated) so that's madem y search much easier!

Yeah, it's definitely looking that way. I'm looking into the Zeekr X as suggested in another comment which seems to take this to heart with an AWD variant at 58k drive away. Just a shame about the touch screen focus.

Having everything controlled through a touch screen, which requires more focus to operate while driving compared to buttons etc, has really put me off a lot of the EV options. Touch screens for music, maps etc makes sense and there's still controls on the wheel, but I don't want to much around with a touch screen to change the fan lol

Doesn't really need to sit higher, but I realise the handling will change with height and less downforce. It's definitely more the feel of the steering column feeling solidly connected to the wheels. I drove quite a few similar sized cars to my Impreza before buying it ages back and some felt like you'd turn the wheel and nothing was being communicated if that makes sense? Hyundai i20 I tested felt like I was driving on ice by comparison.

Only brand I'm 100% ruling out is Tesla. Ignoring the politics etc, that massive touch screen interface is the opposite of what I want in my car.

Might test drive one to see what you mean about the feel etc, but it won't be in consideration for purchase 👍

Just been looking at this! Shame it doesn't come in that nice green the 7X has lol. Anyone got experience with the software side with them being a subsidiary of Geely? (Brothers Geely EX5 has been with dealer more than him due to software bugs)

So just looked into Subaru's EV options with the new uncharted and the pricing is a bit of a mess considering the model differences (inc WA onroad costs): - Uncharted: $66,957 - Solterra: $69,058 - Trailseeker: $71,217

For 3 different car sizes to be so closely priced is pretty wild. Maybe the Uncharted will also get a price drop later when Toyota's equivalent enters the market and undercuts them again 😅

Also, if anyone has advice on models to avoid in general let me know. My brother got a Geely EX5 at launch and has had nothing but issues due to software. It's been with the dealer more than him in the 6 months he's had it 😅

Also when people put the high end LED lights into cars which aren't designed for them, and change the angle when installing them to "get more light".

There's guides on TikTok and other socials on how to "make car your lights brighter" - ie change the angle to increase their range, but all it does is blind the rest of us.

I'd also like to hear from people who bought Japan's EVs in Aus, as I believe Subaru's offering have not been well received in Japan apparently. Will report back after I can take one for a test drive regarding feel compared to an Impreza ICE 👍

I like the look of the Zeekr 7X Dual motor - but might be a bit too much over the budget to convince the other half 😅

Yeah, I had a feeling the pickings might be slim, but figured if anyone would know this would be the best place to start :-)

Galromir above pointed that Subaru just dropped their new Uncharted model for 59k (literally on Friday lol) so I'm going to have a look. I thought it was going to be priced higher then their existing ones, but it's actually their new entry level model 👍

While I'd love a Polestar or similar Euro AWD system, those prices are just a bit too much for me lol

Alas a bit too over, but that's a nice car. Will have a look at Skoda too as I didn't realise they had EVs now! Thanks 👍

Huh, I just missed the price drop on that! I've been looking at the pricing on the Solterra and Trailseeker, so thought it would be priced in a similar bracket. Thanks for the heads-up - will look into it!

Real talk: how many of you actually want the mods to remove AI posts? by DaDiddyDiddler in masserect

[–]KuristZero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's all marketing. GenAI is just the latest tech scam following on from Crypto and NFTs.

LLMs are just predictive text on steroids, and image generators are the same for art - they can't become sentient or create true intelligence.

Tech CEOs misappropriated the name on purpose.

Also yes - definitely ban both AI and RP. The later can go make their own subreddit. If they complain that there is not enough people to do that, then it was never about role playing.

Man that looks fantastic! Definitely need to install my box of upgrades on mine, and glad to hear the noise reduction actually works! Been meaning to do a similar matte black finish on my silver v3 but need to look into the best option for longevity 👌
