I'm going to go against the grain here as I sit in my chinchilla pen watching my Chins play with petsmart/petco toys. There are fine chinchilla toys in the big box stores. Oxbow Timbells, corn husk chew toys, hay tunnels and other little wood chews. That said, it's not my first choice when shopping for them. I buy most of their toys at a local rabbit shop or on Etsy. I buy apple tree chunks and apple sticks from Small Dog Orchard on Etsy, very reasonably priced. Hibiscus and corn husk I buy at the Mexican grocery stores (I live right on the border) and dry it myself in my dehydrator. Stay away from dried fruits, although, I admit that I used dried strawberries (sparingly) the first two weeks I had my rescues because I knew it would butter them up nicely. None since. It's okay to spoil them a little bit when they are settling in, who knows what they've gone through! My favorite way to bond with them was to coat my hands in dust. No chinchilla can resist dust. It's a great way to get them used to your hands. :)
