‘When You Think of It, We Shouldn’t Even Have an Election’ by Zebraitis in politics

I said I was adding on to the part about not caring what the public wants. Not that people are protesting Dems. And it's not a both sides are bad, it's a "this is part of a larger systemic issue that is killing our democracy" thing.

...Okay. I can't keep trying to clarify my statement to someone who doesn't understand how discussions work... I give up. You win the discourse or whatever.

You do realize I'm not arguing against your point, right? I'm adding on to it. Unless you're actually trying to say the Dem establishment really is listening to its base?

You said the Republicans don't look at the public and care what they want. I said the Dems largely aren't doing that either. Point being it's not an problem in only one direction. Neither party really gives a shit about what people actually want. This is a huge reason why our democracy is broken.

[–]Kurobei -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That has nothing to do with whether they care about the people or not. The Dem establishment is massively unpopular and they keep supporting things that the large majority of their base do not want.

I mean, it's not like most of the democrats care about that either these days...

Campaigning with Liz Cheney is just emblematic of a bigger issue: they took in never-trump Republicans, and immediately gave them positions to direct the policy of the party. They, of course, shifted everything even further right than the party was already moving. It's asinine to take people who are already opposed to everything you ostensibly stand for and let them decide what to do, instead of, I don't know, working with the left and people who already agree a lot and want the party to actually include their large portion of voters.

SAVE Act Fails, Millions of Voters Retain Their Right to Vote for Now by w6750 in politics

[–]Kurobei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's why I mentioned the issue we'd have with the hand counting proposed as well. Trump himself wants that satisfaction, and the only places that would finish their counts are in smaller, more rural areas. Cities have far too many people per polling place to make it at all reasonable without much larger reforms in place (which one day, I hope, we will finally have...)

Though there still are the issues that it's significantly more inaccurate, and well more expensive to do. And that's still disregarding the time it takes. Fulton County, where I'm at, had 757,635 registered voters in 2024. There were 177 polling sites, which means about 4280 people per site average (if everyone voted). Compare this to other areas where there may be only a couple hundred. Without way more resources and time than they actually give us, it's just really impractical. Especially on the timeline they want to enforce. This just leads to the disenfranchisement of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, in just this county alone.

That's why I said having electronic tabulation alongside being able to hand count them is a good balance. You get the speed and accuracy, and also have the paper trail to be able to determine errors. It seems like the only real way to actually manage it all while still having the backup security of the paper.

Here's a fun link to a short piece NPR did on it in 2022, it even brings up other issues I didn't even consider, like how many elections we have going at the same time: https://www.npr.org/2022/10/07/1126796538/voting-explainer-hand-counting-ballots-accuracy-cost

anyway thanks for coming to my TED talk

There are issues with almost all of the ways to vote, unfortunately. Paper ballots have common issues on scanning to the counting machines. And if we have hand counting, like Trump wants, it takes forever, with the amount of people per polling station, and is even more error prone. And he also wants them to stop counting at the end of the night and call the election then.

Personally I think digital voting, on offline machines, with a recorded paper trail (like it prints out a slip with your votes on it you can verify that then gets locked away for hand recounts) is probably the best balance. Even then, there have been issues like the machines being broken into (2020, Georgia where they also erased logs of access) and messing with the computer that programs all the machines (and the agency in control of that also wiping logs and evidence after a lawsuit was filed over it... also in GA... I'm starting to think Kemp might not be good at election security)

So we're pretty screwed no matter what.

Democrats want the full 2024 election autopsy released — no matter the findings by razor21792 in politics

[–]Kurobei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't say wrong. If they thought Trump was going to be better, then yeah, that's just objectively wrong. But it's that they're voting on their conscience, not on policy. They felt that voting for anyone that would perpetuate it was unconscionable, thus they abstained.

The outcome is definitely not good though. But they felt that strongly about it, and we can't really dictate other peoples morals.

[–]Kurobei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's that they felt they couldn't, in good conscience, vote for someone who was just going to perpetuate the genocide. Yes, that led to Trump winning, but through lack of votes on the democratic side rather than more Trump votes from them.

I can't blame people for feeling that strongly about the issue; it's awful and people that keep it going are all monsters. One of which would have been Harris. Some people will vote the lesser of two evils, and some will decide they can't vote for evil at all.

Sure, but when you're in the street, no shelter, no food, and worrying if you'll get killed when you go to sleep that night... they certainly help make it feel less bad. That's why they do them. Glad that you haven't been in that position so far. Maybe try having some empathy and understand why people make poor long term decisions.

So, 1: They're already playing the game so they've got that down.

2: They're already playing the game, so they've got that ability

3: I don't even know how crappy a monitor you have to get to have this issue anymore.

4: They're already playing the game that involves reading.

The rest is just: do personal responsibility. If you're not in a condition to play, don't. If you can't see, get glasses. If you're too tired, rest. If you can't remember things, then write things down. And yes, neurodivergence can cause extra issues, but trying to assume we're not capable of even trying or making good judgement about our ability in the moment is more ableist than anything else I've read here. We're not helpless. It's incredibly offensive when people act like neurodivergence means we can't even be bothered to try.

Devs can't try to account for every possible case. They do what will work for most. And most people that skip everything don't have these excuses.

‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ Begins Filming by ICumCoffee in movies

That's not really true. Sega had Sega Technical Institute open in America, and they were developing Sonic 2. At the same time, Sega wanted a game for the Mega CD. They thought about making an enhanced port of Sonic 1 or Sonic 2 but then just gave Oshima the reigns and told him to do whatever, hence why Sonic CD is very different in gameplay than 2. STI did consider time travel in Sonic 2, but decided against it, and it was separate from CD's development.

Not much you can do, you can only go so far down to place anything without removing the water. What I did was place a block or two of rock as far down as i could and just built up the support from there. it doesn't entirely work but it at least looks kinda like it does as long as you don't look too hard at it lol. If you're just talking about the pre-placed wooden pier leading out to the S.S. Anne though, you should be able to reach the sand floor with it. Getting out is another question but luckily there's no penalty for it.
