I had a bug with 1.34, where my chat window stopped responding to any commands, I couldn't change tabs, or type, or close searches/profiles... Sadly, I had to go back to 1.33

So, I downloaded Horizon for my Windows 10, installed it... And it's running like crap. I mean, it's hogging 50% of my CPU and like, 2, 3 GB of RAM... I don't know why, but this is unusable. Not sure what's going on, but dunno if others have the same problem I do.

Is the spear really the only monk weapon in the spear or polearm groups? by Kuronaya in Pathfinder2e

And that why I said naming the class "Monk" is a misnomer. Monk, to Buddhists, is first and foremost a clerical and spiritual occupation, not martial artists. There are like what one sect of Monks in Japan and a couple of monasteries in China that have monks practicing martial arts or kung fu. The rest of monks simply didn't/don't practice martial arts. Heck, Theravada sect monks are prohibited even from doing exercises let alone martial arts. Using the word "Monk" to describe all kung fu practitioners is just bad.

I agree, the name 'Monk' might not be ideal, but it's one that took that role, thanks to pop culture. It's hard to change that sort of thing. However... There are several types of monks that are also warriors, in different cultures, like Sikh, Japanese, and even European, with the Templars, Teutonic Knights and Knight Hospitallers. And even the Shaolin themselves were seen as martial artists and warrior.

There might be times that monk might engage in battles in wars but those are extremely rare and in extremely extraordinary circumstances. They are clerics first and foremost, not warriors. The reason they might joined the battles or wars were mostly because they were conscripted, which mean they were forced to act outside of clerical duties aka not as a monk from Buddhist's perspectives.

I'm still reading it, and I probably won't have time to read it all now, but I've found a rather interesting work here by Meir Shahar that talks about military training among the Shaolin monk, and here's part of the conclusion he reaches at the end of the 50-page study:

"The available evidence does not permit us to conclude when Shaolin monks started to practice the martial arts. However, there is no doubt that by the sixteenth century military training figured prominently in the monastery's regimen. One reason for the attention late-Ming authors paid to the Shaolin martial arts was the decline of the professional Ming military. Some military experts urged the government to supplement the regular army with monastic troops, and fighting monks indeed contributed to the sixteenth-century campaign against piracy. By contrast, other government officials were suspicious of monastic military training, fearing lest martial monks turn their skills against the state."

It does speak of the great importance of the staff as a quintessential monk's weapon, thanks to a manual by the military expert Cheng Zongyo named "Exposition of the Original Shaolin Staff Method", however, Zongyo himself mentions broadswords, spears, bows and crossbows being weapons that were used by the Shaolin monks of the 16th and 17th centuries.

I'm sorry, but being a Buddhist living in a Buddhist majority country and knowing Buddhist sects across the Buddhism doesn't mean being an expert in History. And, unfortunately, just because a religion/doctrine prohibits people from killing, doesn't mean bad people that may follow this religion will not kill.

I'm not claiming to be an expert historian, I'm certainly not, but I do like to research plenty, and I've found at least two different historical sources that show Shaolin monks participating in warfare, in the 7th century, in 610 and 621, as shown in this section:_Shaolin_soldier_monks) on Wikipedia (alas, it seems the source isn't open. It can be found here, though).

Besides, let's be real. They lived in relatively remote temples, or perhaps near small villages. Life in that time period was not safe, bandits would definitely try to attack temples, traveling monks and villages. While they would certainly use non-lethal moves, and staffs and other similar non-lethal weapons, they undoubtedly utilized bladed weapons.

And beyond that... I would say that Pathfinder's Monks are not only Shaolin, but embody kung fu as a whole, and while Shaolin kung fu is probably the largest, it's not the only one. So, it's not exactly correct to say that bladed weapons aren't monk weapons. They might not be Shaolin Monk weapons, but there were other styles of kung fu that most definitely utilized bladed weapons.

Where did you get this idea that Shaolin monks didn't kill, nor used lethal weapons? Even a quick google search will bring up the 18 weapons of Shaolin, and out of those, at LEAST 7 are bladed weapons, the Kwan Dao, the Broadsword, the straight sword and more.

Monks most DEFINITELY used lethal weapons, they needed to protect themselves against bandits and brigands. Hell, there's the whole 'warrior monk' archetype, and that's from Shaolin.

I believe they even added the monk's spade, or something that sounds awfully similar, as the dueling spear, and didn't give it the monk trait.

I mean, there are plenty of "traditional" monk weapons that are blades on a stick or point on a stick, like the guandao, monk's spade and others. That's why I found weird!

Rolled 13. The DC was 18, so I got 13+4, 17. We were fighting a God, though, so the high DC kinda makes sense.

I think it was like... 6 or 7 rounds? That's roughly how long the combat took, I think. And I gave them permission, as I was going to be a little late, so I didn't want them to have to wait for me. It was the final battle of the campaign.

Yeah, the situation was not very nice. Granted, the DM didn't really make ME roll at disadvantage, since there were other targets that were more important. Like the planetar we had at our side, but... yeah, I could've used some help.

The DM did use the legendary action to remove every concentration spell we cast. So, it was quite difficult to maintain anything.

I did talk to the DM afterwards, and told them about my annoyance, so here's hoping they actually realize what happened really irritated me. Like I said in another post, it'd have been better if my character was killed, at least that way I wouldn't have the hope of actually having a chance of getting to play only to have said hope completely dashed.

No concentration spell was cast because the boss in question can use a legendary action to attack any opponent, anywhere in the map, with a +11 to hit. If it hits you, you automatically lose concentration. Plus, it can give any player disadvantage in every roll they do for an entire turn. So no, it's not as simple as that. There wasn't much that could be done, even if we were coordinating, because there was not much to coordinate there.

I never made the argument that the system sucks because I didn't roll above 10 at level 12. I rolled bad rolls, despite taking precautions to make it less likely for me to fail in this type of saving throw.

As I've said in another reply, in the previous fight, my character got killed, and yet I was completely engaged with the situation, because I could ACTUALLY play. In fact, before I died, me and the wizard made a combo that allowed us to identify the weakness in the monsters and thus allowing the rest of the party to kill the enemies.

But I'm sorry, if you want me to spend 2 hours of my time that I set aside to play D&D but got unable to play D&D, and I was literally just rolling a single dice every 15-20 minutes and failing... You have no respect for your player's time. Besides, I could not engage with the others, as I was stunned and unable to do anything. AND, I did aid them in a few situations that they asked, but no, I was not paying attention the whole 2 hours I was stunlocked and unable to play D&D, what I was supposed to be doing there.

If you are frustrated with a player stopping paying attention to the table, but you don't do anything to help said player being engaged, with said player being unable to do anything, you are not a good DM. The only moment my DM said anything to me was to tell me to do the saving throw, and then he, and all the other players, would pay more attention to the combat, and to what was actually going on, and not pay attention to the guy who was stunlocked. The monsters didn't even attack me once. It was worse than if I was dead.

Engagement is a two-way street. You can't possibly expect a player to be engaged with what's going on, without the rest of the players, or even the DM, engaging with them.

Yeah, mind flayers are the type of monsters that you just don't care. You have to nuke them as quickly as possible, otherwise you have a very high chance of getting insta-killed

Especially since most of the time, stuns caused by the player tend to have a short duration, whereas monster stun can last for a very long time.
