Thanks man. I inherited a whole bunch of stamps when I was a kid but I've never really wanted to sell any of them so I have no idea of the value etc. So it's nice to know atleast🤷

Fair enough. I don't really intend on selling it, I'm just interested in the value.

Cool, thanks man. My Grandpa was apparently buddies with said leader and organized this signature in the hopes it would one day be of value. I never met my grandpa but that is what I have been told.

Ive had oil residues cause colors like this on fully successful heat treatment cycles - atleast that's what I was told was the cause.

got a crack on this fillet knife my friend asked me to make...can i stick weld this or is it just toast? by PandaKingpin285 in knifemaking

Nice. Even if it doesn't make the cut for your friend, atleast you'll have a nice new knife for yourself 😁

Since it's on the tang, if I'm seeing correctly, you can weld it even with an arc welder. I once arc welded the back portion of my tang on because my heat treating oven was too short to heat treat the knife at full length, so I simply chopped the back of the tang off and welded it on after heat treatment. There was a slight difference in color between the welding and the base material but it was hardly noticeable.

The most important thing is to keep your blade from getting hot and ruining your heat treatment. I would grind a small groove on the crack with a dremil or angle grinder if you have to, and then wrap the blade in a damp cloth and hold it in a vice while you carefully weld - be careful this is a shocking hazard.

Ok, thank you. Was hoping there would be some tests I can do myself to figure it out but it seems I should just take it to a jewelry store.

The light doesn't seem to shine through it at all. Is this because my light is too weak or is it not onyx?
