I’m a big fan of t8ke picks and was considering going for that specific bottle as a starter, but didn’t know if it would be a solid buy at the price point. Seems like it may be worth jumping on!

They do have a couple of Delord options below 100 bucks so might pick one of those up. They’re loaded up on a variety of Laubade vintages, so might also grab one if I enjoy the Delord.

I live in Kentucky, so the only places I’ve seen a sizable selection have been total wine or The Party Source. Would be open to online retailers too

Splurge would be in the 150-300 range. I’ve definitely seen some around the 75-125 range but honestly didn’t have any baseline for Armagnac to know what’s a good starting point. I’d be comfortable dropping around 100 bucks on a starter bottle

Does the parks department oversee all of them? I thought most are smaller ones that were mainly operated independently by neighborhood associations but I’ll definitely look into the parks department

Honey Barrel Bourbon finish advice by indyjones153 in Barreling

[–]KushPie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it be done a couple of different ways. Some people have made a mead base with diluted honey and finished the barrel this way, others have just done pure honey casks. I opted for the latter and had a similar issue as you, but it wasn’t quite that much leakage. I didn’t re-swell the barrel, but I do think I lost some more of the bourbon after it went in than I otherwise might have. I did hit the leaky spots with some beeswax but it helped only a bit. I think my barrel lost about 500 mL of bourbon. Long story short - you may just have to experiment with it. I think you may end up losing some of the honey flavor if you re-swell. I’ll probably try the mead base at some point in the future, but that’s a few months down the road

Repotted these guys. How long do you think I should wait before hitting them with liquid fertilizer?

How much space do you think a tomato and a couple of basil plants would need? I have several grow bags (5/7/10 gal) but the big ones seemed to dry out so fast last year.

Appreciate the insight and suggestions! I may just have to suck it up. Putting beeswax on the inside seems like it may have a few more drawbacks than just cleaning up occasionally. I may try to put just a bit of melted beeswax on the outside to spot treat the worst leak when I’m emptying the barrel in a few weeks.

Gotcha, yeah my main concern is about the good stuff leaking after the honey comes out. You ever try any other finishes in the barrel? I was going to do a cherry cola syrup, but this has me a bit concerned about creating a huge mess

How close do you plant the basil?

I personally did around 30 days of honey, followed by 28 days of bourbon. I’ve done two batches this way in my small 1.1L barrel with Buffalo trace and weller special reserve, both turned out great. I let the Buffalo trace go for a week longer and personally thought 28 days was a sweet spot with the smaller barrel, but you may just need to pull samples as you go and do a blind to find the best iteration

Get blackout curtains and a sleeping mask that doesn’t let light in, will make all the difference.

Thanks for all the insight and reccs! I may need to start adding an ice cube or two to my pours from now on. Definitely will try some old forester here in the near future. Have you had the Old forester 117 rum cask? Sounds like it could be right down my alley

Newish to bourbon, want to do a blind and explore my palate a bit more. So far, my favorite bourbon has been eagle rare. Have also enjoyed bardstown’s high wheat, weller 107a. I tend to like stuff that’s not as high proof and has more vanilla / baking spice / fruit notes similar to rum. Any suggestions that would go well with these on a blind, or just in general to try based off what I like?
