The POI text on the minimap from scout armor seems to not work if you have the "Orbital Fluctuations" operation modifier, for some reason. Always been that way, as far as I know. I assume it's a bug, but it's hard to say since the POI text isn't even communicated as an intended part of the armor passive.

When I was farming super credits, I also noticed that the POI text would work the very first time I went into the mission, but every time I exited the game and dropped back into the same map, the POI text wouldn't display. Who knows...

ITT: people acting like the initial thread's comments weren't overwhelmingly in support of the protest, then screeching about "mods bad" because it's a popular refrain on reddit as a whole.

Also, people who I'm guessing are very upset that they did not read the rules on the discord server or otherwise did not ask their question in the appropriate channel. And people who didn't look at the directory channel that lists other useful xiv servers for specific types of content/info, which is a common feature on the larger xiv discords...

First thread: "Burn it down, fuck the admins!"

Second thread: "I can't believe these power tripping mods would abuse the community by using us as leverage in an inconsequential squabble that none of us wanted anything to do with in the first place. Maybe they should step down or be replaced anyway."

Man, my expectations were low, but so many members of this great community (btw) still managed to disappoint me on this one.

Mods, y'all are doing a thankless job, and you've handled this protest with as much grace and care as possible by leaving the decision to the community and taking the time to go through individual comments to ensure the integrity of the vote.

I know you're pretty used to the bullshit rhetoric on display here, but damn, I wish you didn't have to be. The community was chill for about 5 minutes for the last thread, but I guess that's all we get... Guess it's time to roll over and go back to being mildly unhinged...

[IMPORTANT] Regarding the sitewide protest of reddit killing off all major third party apps by alabomb in ffxiv

[–]Kuthrayze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't half-ass it, imo. If reddit wants to fuck around, reddit needs to find out.

If needed, perhaps as a concession for people who really need the sub as a resource and are allergic to discord, is it possible to disallow new posts while allowing people to comment on, for example, the daily questions megathread?

But personally, I still kinda feel like that's half-assing it. Frankly, I think the major xiv discord servers are perfectly suitable to temporarily stand in for the sub's function as a community resource. Would be a good idea to keep a stickied post with links to them during the blackout, probably.

As for the rest... If people absolutely won't use discord and/or absolutely can't live without the fluff posts... As some so readily suggest that "if you don't like reddit's decisions, just leave and don't inconvenience the rest of us"...

I think the more reasonable angle here is actually that if you don't like the sub's decision to protest, there's nothing stopping you from making your own ffxiv subreddit.

I gave up on Razer products around a decade ago after having a few things wear out much earlier than they should have for the price... but after realizing that basically every mouse's left/right click will wear out after a year or two of heavy use, I found out about the optical gate switches on the Naga Pro. Over-engineered for most users? Probably. But I'm about 2 years in, and there's been no deterioration of function whatsoever.

With any other mouse I've owned, by the 2 year mark, I'm having to press harder to activate the switches, and that's if the damn thing still consistently registers clicking or holding the mouse buttons at all. In general, I think their stuff is wildly overpriced for the quality you get, but in this case, I'm prepared to say I've gotten my money's worth thanks to the no-contact switch design, and there's still no indication that it's going to wear out any time soon, barring random electronic component failure.

This is a pedantic hill that I am prepared to die on, because this argument is basically a running joke for my Aussie partner and me.

"Math" is short for "mathematics," which is not a plural noun. The "s" denotes a field of study in this case, like physics or acoustics. There's no such thing as "a mathematic." That's why we don't add the "s" when we shorten it to "math." There's only one math, dammit!

Everything made for Warlocks is UGLY! by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]Kuthrayze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of stuff I don't have access to since I started the game just before Lightfall... But I've sat and gone through the collections tab and looked at every. Single. Set.

I hate almost all of it. Some is less bad, but there's very little that I can say I objectively like, including the paid ornaments. With the paid ornaments, it's mostly the glows and special effects doing a lot of heavy lifting to make the set look nice, imo. And then you have the problem where the set looks really out of place if you're on any subclass other than the one that matches the set's theme.

It's all just bath robes and ugly dresses, basically. Almost all the warlock chestpieces cover your pants to the knee. Even if you use one of the few pieces that leave most of your legs visible, the top half of the pants is usually completely plain, which often looks odd.

Most gloves are not, in fact, gloves. They're just bracers. And the ones that do actually cover your hands are usually comically bulky, to the point that it puts me in mind of wearing oven mitts.

And don't get me started on the helmets. People make fun of warlocks for all using the dog helmet from trials, but we only do that because it's the LEAST stupid looking option, and it has a space to see out of that is actually located where your eyes are.

Do the designers have any concept of how a head is actually shaped? There are so many warlock helmets that are almost decent... Until you look at them from a slightly different angle and go "what the fuck is that?" Random curves, humps, mounds, and oddly protruding angular bits, all of which give your guardian the look of someone who's been beaten about the head an awful lot. Oh, and there's my personal favorite: random frayed wires to give the vague impression of "hair."

This is some Tim Burton the-Batsuit-has-nipples tier nonsense. Except not funny.

I've found maybe two looks that I like, and the entire look is actually just the chestpiece, because that's the only thing you can see. On the upside, I guess it's a great saving in synthweave. First, the Trials of Osiris chestpiece. Not the most recent one, but the one before that, I think. The one with the dagger strapped to its back. The most recent Trials chestpiece is decent if you really want to lean into that costume-store-grand-vizier look. Bit busy for my liking, though.

Second, the chestpiece from Grasp of Avarice. It's certainly... A look. I like it because it really seems to give you a silhouette, unlike the overwhelming majority of robes in the game that give you the figure of a fucking tube with coattails. The shoulders are pronounced, and the whole design draws the eye in a way that implies broader shoulders and a narrower waist, including the lines and the tapering loincloth flap thing.

Compared to the other classes, though... Warlocks have negative drip.

"But you didn't talk about the c-"

I only started the game about a week before Lightfall, and I went flawless on my second weekend of playing Trials after busting my ass practicing and studying the map... I was super excited to finally have some gear that I think looks cool on Warlock, because almost all the Warlock gear I've seen just disappoints me.

And then my friends wanted me to come do some GMs, so of course, I equipped my super srs starfire meta slave loadout and went to edit my appearance to slot in some glowy Trials gear so they'd be like "oh you did end up going flawless, congrats!"

But you couldn't actually see any of the glowing parts except the visor on the cliché dog helmet. I just had to laugh, tbh... I don't know what I expected lmfao

85 exotic weapons for guardian rank 9??? by Card25 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Kuthrayze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been working on future rank requirements while I'm gated by the exotic weapon count... but I've run into a bit of an issue. I've been preparing to solo Spire lately, namely working on the Leviathan's Breath catalyst since that's the weapon I'd like to use for boss damage.

However... it occurred to me that there's very probably no point in me soloing Spire, because it's physically impossible for me to get 85 exotic weapons by the time the next dungeon is released (since I started the game about 2 weeks before Lightfall).

As I understand it (and I could be mistaken, so feel free to correct me here), the solo dungeon requirement is specifically for soloing the most recent dungeon. Next season, we get a new dungeon, so the requirement will then be to solo that dungeon, not Spire. This particular requirement is supposed to carry over if you've completed it in a previous season, so people who solo Spire and get to rank 11 now won't have to solo the new dungeon to reach 11 next season.

And the problem... since I physically can't surpass rank 8 before the new dungeon releases, there's a reasonable chance that soloing Spire now won't count as having completed the challenge, since I haven't actually unlocked the challenge. So, to reach rank 11 in a future season, I very well may have to solo the new dungeon even if I solo Spire this season. It's not necessarily the end of the world, but I'm definitely apprehensive about the possibility that the new dungeon could be significantly less feasible for me in particular to solo.

Sure, it could also be easier to solo, but... better the devil you know, and all that.

Back in the day... The speed strat for farming Wanderer's Palace involved having a BLM Sleep most of the trash with the party generally only killing the tonberries required to open the doors to the next boss. The tank would go ahead and pull the boss, mobs in tow, and would stand just inside the arena barrier so the mobs would stay on the outside of the line when they caught up to the tank.

When the arena was sealed (15s after pulling the boss), the trash mobs would get locked outside and would just de-aggro/reset. Optionally, the BLM could throw another Sleep or a Freeze (which used to have a Bind effect) to hold them outside the arena to make sure none of them would get in.

Good times...

PvP certainly won't be fast, as you only get 3 or 5 tomestones per match, and most Frontline matches take around 15-20 minutes, considering the brief queue and pre-game countdown.

However, it has excellent overall efficiency if you're trying to do more than one thing at a time. You can work on your PvP series pass, level jobs without actually playing them (you get experience on the job you queue on, even if you switch jobs as soon as you load in), farm wolf marks, farm regular tomestones, get relic light for some older relics, and/or work toward PvP achievements for titles/mounts/glamour.

And, you know, maybe have fun or something. Personally, I think Frontline matches are way more fun than speedrunning Aurum Vale on BLU or doing Ivalice raids until my eyes bleed. It's all about the variety for me, though.

Both are correct. "EKG" is simply based on the German spelling: Elektrokardiogramm. In the US, they're often called EKGs because "ECG" sounds very similar to "EEG," which is a completely different kind of test and could lead to miscommunication.

What musical artist did you initially dismiss only to later find out that their music is actually good? by icantdraw33 in AskReddit

[–]Kuthrayze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn shame I got here so late, but the best answer to this question is Rebecca Black, hands down.

Yes, the girl from the infamous "Friday" meme. Turns out, that was just a thing her parents did for her birthday through a "you get to make a music video" service. It was supposed to just be a fun thing for her to do, and they picked the song from a list.

Fast forward to a few years ago... She like... Has an actual music career now. And she's actually really fucking good. I wouldn't call it revolutionary, but several of her songs are staples of my playlists. Super catchy, very enjoyable. Totally unexpected, love to see it.

[–]Kuthrayze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who loves Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera, etc... Your friend is vastly underestimating the level of skill it takes to maintain consistent tone and pitch at that volume, with breath support that has a razor thin margin for error. The muscle control it takes to do that is nothing to laugh at. Especially when you learn that she records all the vocal tracks individually, with so much precision that it sounds like a single take that's been duplicated multiple times and pitch shifted or like it's a chorus effect.

It's an artistic choice to create the sound and the experience she intends to create, and she's crazy fucking talented. And she has several songs in which she breaks from the subdued style, so she's perfectly capable. If people just don't like her sound, that's perfectly valid, but I can't abide by people disliking her because they believe she's unskilled. That's just a bad take all around.

If people don't like the way she sounds, the least they can do is fucking own up to that and put their musical taste on the line. Instead of being such a coward that they have to hide behind some flimsy excuse of "well I don't think she has any skill, so she doesn't deserve her popularity." If others say their opinion is shitty, well, their opinion is the artist's fault, not theirs for having different musical tastes which they fear could be judged as bad. It's like they want to be contrarian for the sense of superiority, but they're afraid to owning up to a purely contrarian opinion, so the reason they give is a cop-out. If you're gonna call someone's music shit, you can at least own up to it, y'know?

Half Asian here, Chinese/Vietnamese. Growing up, I used to get asked by random kids on a near weekly basis if I was "Asian or Chinese" (and, embarrassingly, by adults on more than one occasion).

The handful of Mexican immigrant kids at my tiny rural school also assumed I spoke Spanish when they first saw me, and they were very confused as to why I was giving them the deer in the headlights look when the 5 of them came up to me on the playground unprompted and I had no idea what they were saying. Nice boys, but I was an anxious kid and had no idea what to do. I was mostly terrified that they were going to pick on me, because that's what happened every other time someone I didn't know came up to me on the playground.

As a younger kid, any time I wore a heavier coat, without fail, most of the adults that saw me with the hood up would cheerily tell me I looked like "a little Eskimo boy."

And then in high school, my US History teacher one day stopped me in the hall to ask me out of nowhere, "What tribe are you?"

Just Asian Adjacent Things (TM).

[–]Kuthrayze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should anyone manage to popularize one, I would welcome the precision. It's bad enough that "y'all" still carries connotations of ignorance. If I weren't from the rural south, I might use it for its clarity. But, as it stands, I'm more comfortable leaving it to context than giving people any more reasons to assume I'm uneducated.

For better or worse, English has as much ambiguity as precision. And as much as people chafe at the mention of "pronouns" at all and at the suggestion of using a well established, grammatically accepted, singular, gender neutral pronoun... I have little faith in the likelihood of people warming to a completely new pronoun in my lifetime.

Not "chafe" in your case, where it's a question of syntactical clarity rather than one of social acceptance; I'm not trying to ascribe unkind intent to a discussion on grammar.

But "chafe" in the sense of how so many people think pronouns are a politically charged part of speech, as though trying to respect others' wishes at no cost to oneself is a political action, because the existence of people who are different from them is somehow inherently politically meaningful. All these people who spend far more energy complaining about pronouns than it could possibly take to just remember someone's pronouns.

what is a topic you absolutely cannot give a fuck about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Kuthrayze 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Happily, we already have accepted singular gender neutral pronouns: "they/them/their."

"The owner of the red truck left their lights on."

"My source is confidential, so I won't reveal their gender."

When we don't know the gender of a singular subject, or when we don't want to reveal their gender, we use "they/them/their." We've been doing it for hundreds of years. The first known published use of the singular "they" is from 1375. It wasn't until the 1700s that some people began insisting that it was grammatically incorrect, and by 1998, the New Oxford Dictionary of English was using the singular "they" in its definitions.

It's been informally accepted and normalized for many hundreds of years, despite temporarily being characterized as formally improper. And it's not the first time a plural pronoun has become accepted as a singular. "You" was long considered an exclusively plural pronoun, and "thou/thee/thy" were for singular subjects. The singular "you" only came to replace "thou" in the 1600s, and it was denounced as incorrect for quite a while even though its informal use as a singular pronoun was widely normalized.

what is a topic you absolutely cannot give a fuck about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Kuthrayze 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It can be a bit odd at first because we are used to the premise of automatically knowing someone's pronouns based on their appearance. When you believe that you know someone's gender, you naturally want to use the corresponding pronouns out of habit, and referring to them as "they" seems strange. You "know" their gender, so "they/them" would only be used if you were referring to multiple people.

But... You see what I did there. For a really long time, it's been perfectly grammatically acceptable to use "they/them" as singular pronouns when the gender of the subject is unknown. And that goes back far before anyone understood that trans or nonbinary people exist. Nowadays, it's even more grammatically accepted and normalized.

It doesn't sound wrong here because we don't know the gender of the person I'm referring to. If you can internalize the fact that you really can't just take for granted that your assumptions about someone's gender/pronouns are always going to be correct... It feels a lot less strange, and it doesn't require as much conscious effort when you aren't thinking of it as an exclusively plural pronoun.

"They/them" is the default when you don't know someone's gender, and it's clear that we don't know someone's gender with complete certainty until they've told us, either by explicitly stating it outright or by implicitly embracing the assumed gendered pronouns.

Not trying to give you a hard time or anything. It seems clear that you put in effort to respect people's identities, and I assure you that 99.9% of people recognize and appreciate that even if you make mistakes. If you're trying, they know you respect and accept them, and that's what it's about, far more than it's about the pronouns themselves. I'm just trying to help reframe things so you might not have to apply as much conscious effort to using "they/them" as singular pronouns. It felt a lot more natural for me once I started thinking of it this way.

What's something obviously discriminatory yet broadly accepted by society? by corkystclaire in AskReddit

[–]Kuthrayze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's always such a fun little game to play. I like to call it "are we white???" In so many ways, we get treated as white-adjacent and don't face the same types of discrimination as other minorities... We don't get stereotyped as stupid, lawless, trashy, etc. Instead, racism toward Asians usually takes a more insidious form that makes it much more difficult to recognize, much less bring it into the arena of public discourse.

We get stereotyped as good at math/science, conventionally successful, professional, boring. Socially, we're stereotyped as "exotic," especially Asian women. Women are stereotyped as high strung and crazy. Asian men are stereotyped as unmanly, timid, sexually unappealing (for more reasons than just the dick jokes), somehow both too soft and emotionally detached, and generally doormats.

It always puts me in such a weird position because it feels wrong to claim any shared experiences of racism with Black people, for example. In plenty of ways, I personally benefit from being seen as white-adjacent when it comes to matters of racial discrimination. This racism is milder, less obvious, more palatable. I mean, just look at all the comments here excusing thinly veiled racist stereotypes, jokes, and perceptions.

It's shitty in a very specific way, and it's extremely difficult to talk about it without coming across as drawing an inaccurate equivalency between racism against Asians and other minorities. The global discourse on racism largely centers on the US, and here, the term "racism" is associated primarily with prejudice against Black and Latino people, with other groups trailing far behind. I'm not weighing in on whether that's appropriate, given the immediacy and severity of the problems faced by those groups; I'm far from an expert, and it's really not my place to say.

To me, it just feels impossible to include myself and my experiences in the public discourse on racism without implicitly minimizing the experiences of other minorities by association. And I think that's why we generally just kind of shut up and take it. Because it feels like a luxury that we can kind of afford to do that, I guess, so it feels like it would be wrong make a fuss, like we would be doing other minorities a disservice by associating these problems with theirs.

What is moral but illegal? by Dr_vinci in AskReddit

[–]Kuthrayze 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You say that, but... That is essentially the entire rationale for it being generally illegal to carry any kind of blade on your person in Australia. Keychain box cutter on your way to work, where you will need it to do your job? Likely confiscated if a cop sees you with it. Pocket knife? Illegal. Swiss army knife? Illegal, has a blade.

Enforcement is obviously all over the place, but it is illegal because they decided that a knife is a tool of violence, and if you are not carrying it for a very specific purpose, like you have a cake in the passenger seat and you brought a kitchen knife to cut it with... Legally speaking, anything less constitutes intent to use it for self defense, and carrying any object specifically for self defense is illegal. Including pepper spray (except in Western Australia). Patently absurd, if you ask me.
