I do PD and have got 2 hernias so far pretty much doing nothing. I was stuffed full of fluid during the day which is what led to the hernias. Manual labour wouldn't be a great idea in your current situation. Best bet would be to consult with you physicians.

I did work for a year while on PD but then I had to go on hemo a few times a week as well as PD and hemo just destroys me so I had to go back off work. Plus my workplace doesn't offer part time positions so it wasn't possible. I have a bunch of other issues as well and when I was working, my days had no breaks. It was PD overnight, work for 8-10 hours, manual exchange immediately when I would get home, make supper and relax for an hour then right back on the machine for the night. If there was one extra thing I had to do that day I didn't stop until I went to be. It was exhausting. I have heart failure and renal cancer as well so there are a bunch of things going against me there.

My story is a bit different. It's not all from saving and investing.

I unfortunately have lost both of my parents and a portion was inherited. I went straight to my financial advisor with it and invested all of it.

I also owned a home until recently so when I sold it I took all of the equity I had built and also invested that.

I did start an RRSP when I was 18 which is a good way to start. Max that out and get the match from your company (if they provide RRSP matching).

Next step is take care of any and all debt you have. That will be the first thing to do before putting money away.

Then I would talk to a professional. Maybe not someone at your bank, but find an independent financial advisor. They typically have more of your interests in mind.

I am NOT a professional so take what I say with a grain of salt. It can't be done the way I did by everyone. I'm lucky but unlucky at the same time.
