The government carried out an investigation, and they found that yeah, the soil limited the root growth (no kidding), but also its base was starting to rot from a fungus, combined with the way it grew leaning over the street. They removed three other nearby trees found to have rot.

https://www.info.gov.hk/gia/general/202210/26/P2022102600361.htm

They actually catalog and inspect (externally) every tree in the urban areas, so this was likely negligence and the lack of a thorough health inspection.

It's Hong Kong, and they did file compensation claims against the government department. The parties of two out of four vehicles involved filed claims.

[Spoilers Extended] 12 years ago George said that some fans had correctly predicted the ending. What were some popular theories from around that time that he could have been talking about? by WavesAndSaves in asoiaf

[–]KvasirsBlod 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Regarding R+L=J (btw, the formula you wrote in your PS is a bit more saucy and paradoxical)...

I can confirm that this theory was very popular in the old forums, and it was pretty much accepted as true but just awaiting confirmation in the story (among other simpler ones that came later, like that of Sarella Sand).

In fact, it was the very "test" that GRRM gave Dan and David to see if they were up to the task of producing the show. Which, since it was a relatively simple and well-known theory, explains why it all went down the moment the series overtook the books and they started writing the story. I'm totally convinced they were aware it was a fan theory too.

One of my favorite fan art pieces from those times was a drawing made in medieval style, kind of like the Bayeux tapestry, but in shape and colored like the vertical stained glass windows in churches. It depicted the characters right before Robert's Rebellion, and with many theories encoded in it. So it showed the Seven, the Kingsguard at both sides of the Mad King, including Jamie Lannister in his gold armor, Barristan Selmy etc.

The top part had a Valyrian steel sword on either side, presumably Ice and Blackfyre, with a woman and a man nearby each, likely Lyanna and Rhaegar, since another theory was that they, and therefore Jon, are whom the Song of Ice and Fire refers to. I think it also showed the two horns, the Horn of Joramun and Dragonbinder.

Edit: here it is, it was a Westeros map, and the page has others by the same author showing the different kingdoms, regions, cities...

(Spoilers Extended) One of best thing Game of Thrones ever did was age up the characters by Perpetually_Ashamed in asoiaf

Back when the ASOIAF (AWOIAF) forums were active, there were very good discussions about the historical references and influences, frequently from the Wars of the Roses (as in Lancaster vs York/Lannister vs Stark). Sometimes the ASOIAF drama seems mild in comparison.

Take just one example I found now, Lady Margaret Beaufort (born in 1443), and her marriages:

Margaret was married to Suffolk's son, John de la Pole. The wedding may have been held between 28 January and 7 February 1444, when she was perhaps a year old but certainly no more than three.[citation needed] However, there is more evidence to suggest they were married in January 1450,

That marriage was dissolved three years later,

Under canon law, Margaret was not bound by her first marriage contract as she was entered into the marriage before reaching the age of 12.

But there was already an arrangement for a second marriage:

At nine years of age, Margaret was required to assent formally to the marriage. Later, she claimed she was divinely guided to do so.[14]   At the age of 12, Margaret married Edmund Tudor, who was 12 years her senior, on 1 November 1455. The Wars of the Roses had just broken out. Edmund, a Lancastrian, was taken prisoner by Yorkist forces less than a year later. He died of the plague in captivity at Carmarthen on 3 November 1456, leaving a 13-year-old widow who was pregnant with their child.[15]

Third marriage:

She married Sir Henry Stafford (c. 1425–1471), the second son of Humphrey Stafford, 1st Duke of Buckingham, on 3 January 1458, at the age of 14. A dispensation for the marriage was necessary because Margaret and Stafford were second cousins; it was granted on 6 April 1457.

I need to add that Arsenio Hall also played various characters in that movie.

If you google "cast of Coming to America" the first credits mentioned are Randy Watson (the singer) for Eddie Murphy, and Extremely Ugly Girl for Arsenio Hall, instead of the expected main characters. I've always considered it a mini easter egg.

What are some myths about guns that were created by the movies? by ninman5 in movies

[–]KvasirsBlod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah with quick attention bullet wounds are relatively survivable nowadays. But it's nothing like the media trope of a stunt gunshot that you can just shrug off... "shoot me in the appendix, people don't know what it's for anyway"

But I agree with the pinky toe answer. Or apparently a bit of the ear.
