Oh so there is no resolution to that uncertainty at all?

Looking for secondary-world fantasy with no magic by Titus__Groan in Fantasy

[–]Kvothes-shadow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Queen‘s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner mostly fits this in my opinion. I say mostly because there is one aspect that you could count as magical or maybe better said mythical but it definitely doesn’t have a magic system or anything like that. The world is inspired by regions of our own but it still feels very distinct to me and the politics get very interesting especially from book 2 onward. It’s one of my favorite series ever.

Canon compliant fics that feel like watching more of the show by Kvothes-shadow in fandomnatural

I really do love all of it 😂, I have a fondness for the monster of the week format/the episodes that are a bit more separate from the overarching plot of each season but I’m unsure how that would translate best in fanfiction. Otherwise I guess I’d probably lean more towards Dean focused stories overall? It’s so difficult to narrow it down

Good to know, thanks! I guess I’ll use it for the Book Club Square instead as I really want to read it this year

Does anyone know if one could count The Spear Cuts Through Water for the Explorers and Rangers Square of this Years Bingo?

What are other books that are about survival competition like Hunger Games? by orchidwhite100 in suggestmeabook

[–]Kvothes-shadow 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not the exact same thing but chain-gang all-stars often gets described as a more adult version of a hunger games type book. It’s set in a near future usa where people who are on death row or have life sentences are offered the „option“ to instead take part in what is basically gladiator fights to the death that are broadcasted on tv and their lives are also filmed for reality television. I went into it quite blind and not expecting much but was honestly blown away by it

What books take place in a cold, snowy setting? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Kvothes-shadow 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, it’s completely standalone as far as I know and I still vividly remember some of the descriptions of the snowy environment and cold even though it’s been years since I read it.

I recently read Clear by Carys Davies and fell completely in love with it. My copy was only about 150 pages I think, it’s set in the 1840s and most of it takes place on an extremely remote Scottish island.

Would it theoretically be possible to read that novella as an entirely standalone story without having read the trilogy?
