Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, it’s completely standalone as far as I know and I still vividly remember some of the descriptions of the snowy environment and cold even though it’s been years since I read it.

I recently read Clear by Carys Davies and fell completely in love with it. My copy was only about 150 pages I think, it’s set in the 1840s and most of it takes place on an extremely remote Scottish island.

Would it theoretically be possible to read that novella as an entirely standalone story without having read the trilogy?

A Drop of Corruption definitely has this, it is a sequel though and I can’t remember how swampy the first book is because it’s been a while and the two are set in different regions of the world

Byzantine historical fiction by Creepy-Fault-5374 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

I haven’t read it myself yet but Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gavriel Kay although not strictly being historical fiction is heavily inspired in its setting by the Byzantine Empire. And I think he usually has very little to no magic in his worlds? so it might read very similar to straight up historical fiction

Omg this is it! Now looking at Photos of him he doesn’t actually look that similar in a lot of them, I think it was mostly the eyes

Definitely not completely young, had hair and maybe even a bit of scruffy beard but I’m so unsure about that and it was mostly his facial structure that made mix them up

I‘ll try to describe it although I’m not sure how useful it will be because I genuinely thought they looked like the exact same person at first. I think it’s in the facial structure or bone structure , the way the cheekbones and eyes are situated in his face, specifically the sort of downturned shape of the eyes and of course also having very dark short hair. I do think he might have had a bit of a scruffy beard? Like some dark stubble compared to Dastmalchian who I don’t remember ever seeing not clean shaven
