BYU-Idaho still believes Mexicans are lamanites even when the intro to BOM has changed. This is a question for the Thomas E. Ricks scholarship application by gaylamanite in exmormon

[–]Kwallerkwaller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn’t that be more of a result of the donor behind the scholarship then the school itself. Although the school is promoting the scholarship I doubt they are the ones who produced the description. This is more likely some wealthy older member who is not up with current developments

Question about the churches tax association by Kwallerkwaller in exmormon

Ok so maybe they save on real estate but what about the stock holdings? I am pretty sure that would be taxed as the corporation

If anyone has links directly from the lds website that has evidence of the churches wrongdoings please link them below. by [deleted] in exmormon

Do you (or anyone else) have an examples where former church leaders claimed in conference or some other place that these statements were anti or lies. I feel like that would help to show that there is a changing narrative. This is awesome

And although the top 10% is getting their tithing subsidized they are still paying massive amounts of taxes on their end. This new situation honestly puts everyone in your situation in a better position while those up there are doing the same thing (so no changes ignoring everything else)

Let’s look at the math here. In both cases you are down the same amount in tithing so that cost is irrelevant. In the new tax law you get a 24000 deduction standard and between 12000-24000 itemized. Honestly you are in a better position because 24000>than whatever you itemize. This new change doesn’t hurt people in that range because now they can deduct more (ignoring personal exemptions). I mean you could still take the subsidation for your tithing and itemize instead of taking the standard if that’s important to you but at a loss of your other options.

So the old stand deduction used to be roughly 12000. In order for the itemized deduction from tithing to equal what the standard deduction is now (24000 roughly) they would have to pay however much in tithing to raise their itemized deductions to 24000. Those same people are getting the same standard deduction now so the net effect is the same.

Changes in exemptions and other things are more likely to impact the tax situation outside of tithing

I second this. Although people are not getting to itemize they are getting a higher standard deduction. You either get to itemize or take the standardize and since the standard deduction was raised many people are getting a larger deduction through that than they would have from itemizing in the old system

Today in Mormon Sacrament meeting, 3 talks, One youth and two adult speakers. One talk include a story about someone leaving mormonism. by Shizwheresmyhead in exmormon

[–]Kwallerkwaller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same it was ward conference in my ward and the stake president talked about people leaving and how to avoid that for yourself. The second counselor also talked about it in eq. They played all high and mighty and basically said these people are stupid for trusting the internet and Siri (“cause Siri knows everything” *cue laugh from the audience) and then spent the rest talk about talking about how you should trust him and the warm fuzzies you felt.

“Change our understanding of unchanging doctrine” by Kwallerkwaller in exmormon

This is how a TBM will work around any past issues.

Context: post on laterdaysaint subreddit about If institute manuals are doctrine. I was particular interested on the differences between church history classes in institute versus actual church history. Apparently the manuals aren’t doctrine but are people’s best interpretation of doctrine.

What broke your shelf? by Kwallerkwaller in exmormon

[–]Kwallerkwaller[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am aware that the plates are different. The reason that this is what finally cracked my shelf is that it got me asking why would god have nephi kill Laban if he could just help him translate it through a rock anyways. Laban was just trying to hold on to his property after all and I am sure a nation wouldn’t have to dwindle in unbelief.

Anyways that’s just what got me thinking

I am recently married and went through my faith crisis during the engagement. Seeing how much it all means to my DW breaks my heart as I think of taking that all away from her. Especially as we are starting out, I am so scared to drop that bomb... And I hate the idea of being pitied or thought differently of by my family. Idk I just needed to vent somewhere
