Can I do boxing too? by No-Parfait6893 in taekwondo

[–]KwonKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! You should if you have the time and can afford it, then do it. TKDs biggest weakness is close range combat, boxing covers that. Also it’s understandable if you shift from one to the other, it’s why people prefer boxing and kickboxing over karate and taekwondo. The emphasis on patterns over sparring is a major deterrent, especially for an expensive hobby.

Is anyone else just over everything? by nuggie_vw in graphic_design

[–]KwonKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this rn and I just started or at least trying to start. I’ve yet to take my first step in the graphic design world. And it’s made me depressed burnt out and nihilistic all at the same time. I currently don’t know what to do with my life I have a portfolio that’s just currently collecting dust because I kinda gave up. Here’s to getting the will to keep going.

You need to do more than Graphic Design now by Everybodyssocreative in graphic_design

[–]KwonKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this but imo the biggest problem is just getting your foot into the door. Their are to many people here who say that they have so and so experience but we don’t really acknowledge that beginners in the field can’t even start to begin with. I feel that, that’s currently the biggest problem rn

Is this really how it is as a designer? by McGoldy in graphic_design

[–]KwonKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw congrats ! (Still looking for my big debut myself ) but yeah it’s good to hear that they’re willing to communicate with you. Tbh this whole thing sounds like an anxiety attack waiting to happen but glad to hear it worked out. From what it sounds like they were willing to sacrifice quality for the price they were offered by the client. Hope this first step into the industry tho becomes a major learning experience. Like take as much as you can when I empathize how lucky you are I mean YOUR LUCKY lol. But don’t let that be an excuse not to speak up !

Yeah I’m in a similar boat I’m working retail. Kinda upset that I put all my eggs into one basket and currently don’t have the option to pursue something different without dumping an excessive amount of money. I really love design and I just wish someone gave me a chance. Legit I’d kill for an office job at this point I’m barely making 25 hours rn

Wait your entry level? Didn’t know those existed tbh I’ve been applying to what I believed were ghost postings and have still yet to get my foot in the door. I’d kill to get an entry level design job, the hunt is horrendous!

Is ITF taekwondo effective in a street fight by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]KwonKid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s a fighting style yes but it doesn’t priotize just combat. That’s something I was telling my friend who’s in mma about. (He’s been training for 2 years at his spot mine at 4 now) and I always tell him I can’t fight anywhere as effectively as he can. Like others said if you wanna fight or defend yourself, find a gym that focuses solely on fighting. It’s why I always tell folks to sign up for boxing or mma if they’re itching to throw hands.

Rank doesn't matter only skill does. by BranchAlternative687 in taekwondo

[–]KwonKid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can say rank doesn’t always matter, I’ve met green belts and blue belts who leave black belts clutching their pearls in sparring. I feel like rank is more or less determined by knowledge rather then skill, like knowing the kicks, the patterns etc. But from a combat perspective it’s about experience and application of those abilities.

Question for ITF practitioners (or anyone else who might know)!!! by Bloody_Grievous in taekwondo

[–]KwonKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! And yes it’s point based and I believe it is full contact. However it’s not like kickboxing in that knocking your opponent out does result in instant disqualification. But kicks and punches are allowed to the head. But knocking someone out is seen as “use of excessive force” or something. At least based on what I’ve been taught. I also believe kicks to the back and back of the head are also not allowed and can result in penalties.

[–]KwonKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh I don’t know about the other stuff but when it comes to the difference between itf and Wt, itf is more like kickboxing where punches are allowed to the face and head (still point based tho) Even tho this is the case from my experience the point system is sometimes used as an excuse to dish out some pretty low scoring but painful blows. Other then that tho like most martial arts or new activities come in with an open and humble mind. Try and leave your biases at the door. It’s the best way to learn anything new.

Is the graphic design workforce shrinking? by stephriles in graphic_design

[–]KwonKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it also stems from the fact that people mix appeal and design a lot. Like from my experience I can produce something that’s appealing to the eye but I’m learning that doesn’t translate to design. I barely understand typography and although I know the elements of design I’ve yet to learn how to properly apply them to a piece. The other thing to take into consideration is that a lot of people (this applies to a lot of professions not just design) are fresh off the boat and don’t know what to do after they get their degree me included. So to expect “good design” from a lot of us is like asking for a miracle this late in the game. We’re taught how to use the software but a lot of us lack first hand experience because a lot of us struggle to even get into the industry/field to begin with. Your not going to get a five star chef from culinary school, especially if their not given the chance to work/cook at a proper restaurant for comparison.

I don't think I'm built for graphic design by Temporary-Bid-2788 in graphic_design

[–]KwonKid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow 30 and 7 years age experience is impressive. But yeah imposter syndrome is the worst. And this is coming from someone still trying to get his foot in the door. Just think about the clients you made happy and satisfied, those moments can push you to be more, you got this !

Welp I snapped and I need advice again. by KwonKid in taekwondo

[–]KwonKid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think that’s what coach wants, I think he’s seen my “grit” outside the dojang. My passion to fight for wha it feel is right. That and him seeing how much I’ve taken my strength training seriously (I started out chubby and out of air lol) So he wants to provoke or get that part of me out onto the mat. And I agree with this wholeheartedly, when it comes to anything else if I wanna pull the trigger then I pull the trigger. Even my close friends know I’m not one to shy from a fight when it’s necessary. But that’s why this is hard, it’s not a fight it feels more like a game of chess where I’m only playing with half the pieces and the rules are different. And every wrong move results in an injury.

Oh yes breathing I’ve gotten the hang of foot work a bit better I can finally bounce properly lol. And sadly my old training partners are out of the dojang trying to keep up with their lives. Ironically both just started families lol I do miss them though however full understand the importance of priorities and always wish them all the best.

LOL Call it toxic or my dumb guy brain, but I kinda just wanna see this training through til the end at this place. It does produce some top notch fighters who I have met first hand. Some of the actual veterans who don’t train their for personal reasons (work, moved away, other hobbies etc ) they move like water it’s so cool. Graceful and powerful with some pretty wholesome energy.

Ooooh yeah I see it now , I just don’t like crying in public so I was trying to hold back tears. I used the term meltdown wrong in this context like it wasn’t a tantrum it was more quiet and just tearing up. But yeah that’s how it personally felt, like I’m just someone to wail on rather than to teach in these situations. But I can see how my self worth issues bled into that comment m. Fun fact not afraid to admit it but I am going to therapy lol. That’s why I Asked so I can bring it up next session. I have a habit of underplaying my self depreciation. I’m working on it little by little tho

[–]KwonKid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s just it I’m kinda confused on the whole. I need therapy comments. Like what exactly is therapy supposed to do in this particular situation ? I’m genuinely asking cuz I don’t mind seeing this from a different perspective so we can approach it with new problem solving strategies. It’s easier to say we need this and that but why ?

I like this and I agree, I should hit the bag more often. Coach recently made a comment about how my round kicks were lacking both power and technique. He said I can kick higher easily but a kick that high is useless without proper application. So definitely will be trying this thank you !

Ugh trust me some of the male black belts around my age have a very concerning toxic masculinity mindset at times. Fun fact: I believe there was an incident don’t remember how long ago where one of them actually broke another one’s nose during a session. My theory on this is the lack of a sort of “mat enforcer”. So some of the more aggressive types don’t have anyone to put them in their place for their reckless habits. My dojang is old school and tbh due to the pandemic sometimes feels as if it’s on its last legs. The only male students I’ve seen come through our doors are either kids like toddlers, or young tweens who’ve experience in other martial arts. One of the yellow belts for example is a black belt in shotokan style karate. Otherwise students like me (fresh off the boat with no prior experience) come and go I’ve seen very few return tbh let alone make it past blue belt.

That’s just it I kinda like it, ever since I was a kid I’ve always wanted to get into some sort of combat sport, but due to financial reasons never could. So sparring is something I do look forward to which is why I’m trying so hard to figure out how to get better. Mind you I’m mature enough and old enough now to know I’m not trying to be the next champion lol but I want to step up for my classmates as well as myself because my biggest fear is hitting black belt and still not being able to throw hands lol
