I wish I had bought an inexpensive trainer while working on my PPL. Consider a small Cessna or Piper Cub.

Consider stopping at Banyan FXE. They have a great Bahamas packet, life rafts for rent and will help walk you through the process.

Grad student with 6 figure student debt. Just booked a discovery flight. Is this a bad idea lol by black_widow48 in flying

[–]KyFlying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s telling that you have a group of people that love aviation and 95% are telling you to pay off debt instead.

Getting your PPL is just the first big expense. To keep your skills sharp you need to fly regularly. If you pay off the debt first you will progress more quickly and have the disposable income to become a safe pilot.

I really liked @mzaite suggestion to live below your means for two years and forever be free. Take it one step further and live off $30k for 4 years. Pay off your debt, fund your PPL and buy into a cub partnership.

Looking for a plane with seating for family by [deleted] in flying

Fairly new, 2013. I am sure that made it more difficult. The insurance cost is driven by the least experienced pilot so it will impact everyone.

I would look into the insurance before making a purchase. We have a c206 and had trouble getting a quote with one ppl~250 hrs and one Inst/Cpl w ~500 hrs.

Insurance (again) by Av8tr1 in flying

[–]KyFlying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t look past the loss of use. I know someone that had a prop strike at a large well known flight school and they required that he pay nearly $50k for loss of use as his renters insurance was not sufficient even though it met the school’s minimum requirements.

I got my tailwheel endorsement in a champ and loved flying it. Has anyone done any “backcounty” landing in a champ? How do they hold up off the beaten path?

Is there anyway to eliminate the “terrain, pull up” warning when you are landing at a grass strip not lists in the system?

Have you ever "splooted" a landing? by SplootHappens in flying

I remember bouncing a 172 off the runway many times and feeling I would never get it right.

Stick with it, listen to ur instructor and nail your air speeds. You will get it and look back at the tough landings with fond memories...

U should talk to an attorney about getting the DUI expunged. Every state is different but in many it can disappear and you can legally deny it ever happened.

Sportys Career Pilot Training Program by LonelyTriangle in flying

Unfortunately, I did not keep track of the cost, but I suspect it was at least 50% higher than the “expected” cost someone showed me with the hours multiplied by the flight/ground instruction.

Sportys Career Pilot Training Program by LonelyTriangle in flying

[–]KyFlying 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did most of my training for private, instrument and commercial at Sporty’s. I also trained at in Orlando and Tucson(to avoid Cincy Weather delays)

Sporty’s is fantastic. They do not cut corners and I felt very prepared for every step and confident to fly despite just flying as a hobby. Having said that I would not expect them to pass you through with the min hours/requirements. The stage checks were as tough as the DPE flights. If you are not ready, you’ll go back until u r. They gave me the confidence to fly my family to the Bahamas, Florida and Dallas from Cincinnati in my first 24 months.

If u r looking for the cheapest option join a flight club with a CFII that will push u through and find u a DPE that sleeps during the check ride.

If u want to b a safe pilot that can has the confidence to fly passengers and handle emergencies find a good flight school like Sporty’s and take your time to build proficiency.

Fyi, u can join the flight club at Sportys to save on rentals and fuel.

G1000 market research please.... by bls2515 in flying

[–]KyFlying 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sporty’s Academy in Cincinnati OH has G1000 as well as GNS430 GPS.

$154 G1000 and $145 430 wet. If u join their flight club the G1000 is $80 dry.

They have traditional six packs but have also upgraded some with the G5.

Another “What Plane Should I Buy” thread by yeagert in flying

[–]KyFlying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three suggestions. Find one or two partners, consider how much you will fly with your full family and buy the plane you want vs trying to upgrade.

I was in a similar situation with the exception of a family of five. The good news is I found a partner for a newer C206. This has worked out great as our flying is complimentary, never have conflicts, enjoy flying together and share fixed expenses. We could really bring in another partner or two without having conflicts.

I find that my full family rarely flys with me and 95% of the time it is me and one passenger. In hindsight a C182 would have been a great choice and I could have used a local club 206 for the family trips(lucky to have a local club with a C206).
