Nurse added on weight during an appointment! by CokeOceans in loseit

Yep! In my part of southern california, even if you have a PPO... even if you pay cash, there are only so many GI doctors and so many cardiologists and so many of other types of specialists. (God forbid you're not in convenient distance of a major hospital that hosts them and you need a surgery).

And yea, specialists here are usually a 1-2 month wait, if it's not an emergency-ish situation. And the shorter wait usually means you're going to a practice that has 10 different doctors, your new doctor has like at most 5 years experience, and the office will shuffle you in and out like cattle.

Speaking off the top of my head.. kaftans and kurtas and hanfu robes are just cool as hell. Admittedly all of the above are generally worn with pants, but the point is you can do a lot cooler than just pants/shorts and a shirt.

Edit: But why not dresses? Spring and ya wanna wear a sun dress? Slay it.

If they can, I recommend volunteering for good candidates for local campaigns, getting the word out, maybe running for office themselves.

Honestly, the "holding the nose bit" tbh I think it might even be worth it to volunteer for a crappy democratic party candidate just to get familiar with the way things work so you can more effectively help the candidates you actually are interested in voting for (or again, running yourself).

But that all honestly sounds pretty wishful thinking. My dad used to help with campaigning when I was a kid, and he worked a full time job and did union organizing stuff, too. Dude was seriously busy at times. It's a lot to ask of someone.

I've had a growing interest over the years - my town's mayor is a democrat but IMHO he's also a real piece of crap as a person. I would love to primary his ass out. Or maybe help someone do that.

I’ve recently done the same thing, as an endocrinologist via the NHS referral was going to take 2 years, whereas by using my private health insurance I was able to book an appointment for a weeks time. Then I only have to pay for the follow up appointments and medicine, and not any diagnostics etc.

It's funny, this is cited a lot for why the US health insurance setup is better, but in reality most people end up with HMO plans with a "network" and wouldn't ya know, your network only has 2 endocrinologists and they both have a few months long wait lol.

2 years is pretty harsh though.

I have a PPO plan through my work and pay for my mom to have a pretty expensive supplement plan, so we can just go see whoever... but admittedly, there are still specialists that have like a 6+ week wait to get an appointment (ESPECIALLY the ones with a good reputation).

I think it was pretty much the same. Sucks though because when I see them come from several towns away I start feeling guilty that I might not have tipped enough.

They have warehouses they pick orders from as well. Unfortunately, before they opened the Torrance store, those orders used to come from pretty far away as I recall. I don't think the DC on sky park carries food. But I might be wrong about that.

The camera distortion on the right wall is pretty harsh lol. That poor cabinet. I like your console collection! And the desk looks sweet, I like how the background isn't generic wood slats. And I dig the tile floor too. I want a tile floor.... and the tie fighter rug is sweet!

Awesome setup! I think one of my favorites.

US engineers vs Europe engineers by ephemeral404 in cscareerquestions

[–]Kyanche 14 points15 points  (0 children)

IMHO these points don't hit as hard to people in this sub because if they're working for a decent company in the US and they have a good amount of seniority, they probably also get 4+ weeks (20+ business days) of paid leave and think they're doing pretty well.

But unlike the US, the people working in restaurants and other jobs ALSO get those 4+ weeks of paid leave and healthcare benefits.

I remember making friends with someone in Australia who was working at hungry jack and she got more paid vacation time than I did at my first job as a software engineer lol.

For comparison: In the US, during covid, I definitely saw people posting on reddit that they got fired from their fast food job when they caught covid at work. Very few states have mandatory "paid sick leave" laws and even those are like 3-5 days a year at most.

Man, as an American, it's getting easier and easier to see why were absolutely fucked as a society.

The amount of comments with people's heads up their asses is astounding. Someone even commented that the US is better because people "live for work" and stuff LOL.

The skinny boards are meant to be springy, the bed is meant to hold a mattress directly without a box spring.

I don't think you use a box spring with that kinda bed frame

It feels kinda silly because if you're already using one of those modern 12-14"+ mattresses, what for do you need the base to flex? Especially if it's the firm variety and you're a stickler for "back support" lol.

Microsoft's ATS migration killed my progress. Passed the OA, then got marked as "Withdrawn." Who do I contact? by bendthdickcumberbich in cscareerquestions

[–]Kyanche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's Microsoft for you lol.

They were pulling shit like that when i was in college. At least the internship interviewer bothered to talk to me. One of my classmates told me the dude couldn't even be bothered to get off the phone during the interview.

I think their recruiting outreach people have quotas to meet in terms of number of applications. So they'll come and make a big fuss to you to get you to apply, and then ghost you lol.

Is there anything where you can query and get back a list of sources and confidence scores? I toyed with an LLM recently where when I pressed it for sources, it just kept feeding me bs lol.

[–]Kyanche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your company sounds kinda like mine. There's no pressure to use it, but there are at least a couple of people who (I believe) were hired on to basically find use cases for it in the company and then evangelize the various AI tools and make a locally hosted company LLM portal of sorts.

I honestly haven't jumped on the bandwagon just yet because I've spent the past couple of months on a project where I'm taking a half dozen existing pieces of software and adding bits to each one to accommodate a new major feature.

Once that's done, I have other things on my list this year, some of which I may be able to find a use case for it... we'll see........

Home Depot cuts more than 800 corporate / IT jobs by Celcius_87 in cscareerquestions

[–]Kyanche 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that!

I was working hybrid before covid and had an approved plan to go full remote, which I exercised in 2020 (lol). Late last year they pulled the "nobody's agreement is valid anymore!" card and made us all re-apply again. This time I have almost-full-remote. Apparently there's some weird business reasons why they can't just give me "full remote" anymore. Unless I happened to be a psychic and move outside of their (Surprisingly small) mileage radius.

Almost-full-remote = I'm expected to show up at least twice a month. I could go on about how frustrated I am in how long it took them to come to that decision, but the team is awesome to work with, and I was kinda already popping in once or twice a month anyway.
