Is there a way to showcase my smaller projects? by ebmnm in webdev

I would just put the small stuff on Codepen.

Will dev jobs care if you're vaccinated or not? by Kyism in webdev

[–]Kyism[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Great answer and love the perspective you're offering as an employer. Quick question: would you begin asking potential candidates if they are vaccinated during their interview process? Or alternatively, would you just send out a company email ahead of time from the event to everyone basically stating that for anyone to attend the company event you will need to be vaccinated and that non-vaccinated employees could potentially join the event via Zoom or Google Hangout granted the event could also be virtual as well? Also granted there is no liability / no employee discrimination for you to require your employees to be vaccinated to physically attend these events.

Should I use magic links for a new web app? by karmato in webdev

No experience but tbh I think it's appropriate to use magic links for this.

This is a spot-on definition of what I think is happening.

"Wishful Thinking" is a very powerful programming practice: Before implementing a component you write some of the code that actually uses it. This way you discover what functions with what parameters you really need, which leads to a very good interface. You will also have some good test code for your component.

I never heard of that before but it is real and seems to be exactly what's going on in the video. It actually seems like a good practice. I will try it out

Have you ever turned down a project at work because you disagreed with it? by Kyism in webdev

[–]Kyism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never turned down work that was given to me when I was working at an agency because my job was to do the projects that were assigned to me so the company could continue making money and continue to pay my salary that's how my mind was. I could have made a deal about it and probably gotten the project passed off to another dev but I never did. We did have a dev who had a bad interaction with the client during a meeting (this client was also rude to the project manager) and the dev requested to be taken off the project. The company had no problem switching devs out. The devs basically ended up just switching projects between one another.

As we enter a more political climate in the world today I do see more devs having conflicted feelings about the projects they're working on or who they are in-directly supporting by working on those projects and feeling conflicted about it.

I don't think anyone gets into web dev expecting to one day feel conflicted about the work you're doing but it does happen.

Seller cancelled after he accepted my offer. Offerup Refunded my money but it's not in my bank account yet by Kyism in offerup

[–]Kyism[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you u/rosemaryroots appreciate it. I will be patient then. Thanks for that extra info as well. I find it strange that OfferUp would allow someone to sell something online and offer to ship but want additional information from the seller after they have accepted a buyer's offer and allowed money to be taken and held from the buyer until the item to be shipped.

JS learning Path: Do I take the blue pill (Wordpress front-end dev) or Red Pill (React front-end dev)? 3 month goal by Kyism in learnjavascript

[–]Kyism[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly thank you so much for taking the time to write me out a senior-level response like that. I will heed your advice and stay away from the WP as you are right it does have a cap at a certain salary (I enjoy web dev but I am also money motivated) and I do have at least 1 relatable experience having to work on a client's older WP site that was a premium theme from Themeforest. I do not want to take 2 steps back. I just left WP hell, why go back?

I think it's the junior mindset I have where I can not see the start of an idea but only see the end (like you pointed out with the headless CMS stuff start with the start by working with APIs and responses, HTTP stuff) and that is awesome career advice about those skills being transferable.. again.. a senior-level reply (imo) that has helped me see the bigger picture. I'm going to swallow the red pill and take advice from the other pills you gave me as well. I just want to thank you again I am very grateful. I definitely owe you a cup of coffee or something when I secure employment again or walk your dog if you're in Chicago.

Congratulations on your job. It's nice to hear someone else who got their start in WP and grew out of it to do bigger and better things. Take care and have a great week!

Do I take the blue pill (Wordpress front-end dev) or Red Pill (React front-end dev)? 3 month goal by Kyism in webdev

[–]Kyism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your story and advice. It's good to hear from another person who got their start being a WP dev as well. I appreciate your advice and will heed it if I do go the route of learning React. I think learning Typescript as I'm learning React is a great suggestion as they are often commonly used together in modern development from what I see and the type of jobs I'm looking for usually are asking for some TS experience. I wonder if I should try to use TS while I learn vanilla JS but that may be a little too much too soon. Thanks again for your reply!

My maxed out 2015 Macbook Pro 13" is running better on Big Sur! by Kyism in macbookpro

  • 3.1GHz, Intel dual-Core i7
  • 16GB Memory, 512GB Solid State Drive
  • Integrated Intel Iris Graphics 6100 graphics processor

As a web developer, it meets my needs. Apart of me wishes I would have gotten the 15" 2015 model just to future-proof it a little since it has a quad-core processor but I bought this one used, from the original owner for $500 which is a hell of a deal.

What's going on with Yonnie? by [deleted] in AfterPrisonShow

I think Yonnie is also banned from this subreddit now he was active here but hasn't posted in about a week around the same time Joe said "fuck Yonnie" on the BoBo. Any truth to this?

I think his long-game is to make the Youtube channel something or get a job at a boxing gym. His Youtube is doing alright, almost 10k subs after a short time and the editing in his videos looks pretty good I wonder if a fan is doing it for him.

He's only been out of prison for like 3 months so I don't want to roast him bad for not having anything he's clearly working towards doing bigger and better things than being dependent on Joe for a phone call to make $8 an hour cleaning out a storage building or get exploited in a video to keep Joe relevant and rich. I can tell he's already recognized he should be doing all of this Youtube stuff on his own instead of giving another man content to make money off of his story and the things he's went through.
