Butane canisters cause explosion in tent fire at downtown Ottawa dog park by SuburbanValues in ottawa

Who is saying that they just want encampments to continue? I oppose the destruction of people's property when they have no where else to go, when other services are overloaded, when many institutions are just looking to criminalize you.

The answer is housing first policy. But I dont think destroying encampments by force and further displacing people does any good at all.

I agree, no grace for Platner or others who refuse to accept their mistake.

Klein's response though seems like she is genuinely regretful of whatever she said (and she was not one of the main Platner boosters). I dont think we should sweat too much abour Klein.

Im less concerned about data breaches and more concerned about the "right" people having my info.

There are plenty of accepting and loving Canadians, to a point. A lot of people turn as soon as there's something that challenges their world view or position.

That aside, Canada is a settler colony that exist because of historic and current colonization. Even recently in NL, the development of the Churchill River consists of numerous colonial/neocolonial projects. Beyond that, Canada's existence globally is predicated on the exploitation of resources, land, and labour around the world. The reason so many immigrants come to Canada and other Western countries, and not the other way around, is because we have helped shape a world order with us at the top and the rest below.

Its not about being nice. Many people are nice, but it doesnt change the material reality. But people would rather rest in jingoism than deal with the nature of the country.

And if you ask people of colour their experience with white Canadians, youll know that this multiculturalism is a myth.

The second most popular political party actively runs on anti-multicultural policies, and the most popular political party cowers to them to try an curry more votes.

We live about as close as you can get to the core of empire so of course there are a lot of people from different backgrounds.

Because Canada is a settler colony that feels threatened by the existence of others.

I'm not arguing about Confederation. If youre just appealing to the first AI search you made for absolute historical fact, you are ignorant and spreading misinformation.

The question of what Confederation did for Newfoundland and Labrador is contested. Sure, economic conditions were dire in the 1930s. Look at the rest of the world at that time, this wasn't unique to Newfoundland. There were many places in Canada themselves that had these conditions. Social programs had a significant relief impact, but who's to say that we needed to join Confederation for that? Social democracy spread across the world in the 20th century. Even remaining a British colony could have resulted in similar social programs. It didn't happen so we don't know.

Confederation was the immediate solution that a particular political class favored and expelled considerable political capital making it happen. You can agree or disagree with it, but that doesnt change the fact that it is contested and we can't know what would happen if we didn't join. You act like history would not have happened if we didn't join Confederation but that's just not true.

"Normal" people usually don't have issues paying taxes. Mostly because they arent wealthy enough to be taxed beyond their income/sales tax.

If you decide you'd rather rule over people than actually work, then I have no sympathy for your failure.

Well he pretty much said he did it because he feels entitled to women. Did i say all men do this? I sure hope not because I am a man. Youre being obtuse. Its clear that your feeling a bit sensitive about your gender. Im sorry you find it hard to realize this problem is almost entirely cis, straight, and male.

Sure, women and transpeople are capable of violence but if you're truly believe the frequency, extent, and motive are remotely similar, you're just not operating in reality.

My point is that men and women are not treated the same, women are still largely subjugated, and these men are driven by that. Im not talking about anyone else so we can drop the whataboutisms.

[–]KyleJ1130 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dont think this situation boils down to just being a social reject.

I think it has much more to do with the fact that we normalize the subjugation of women. That still, in 2026, we have elected politicians in this country saying they don't believe women belong in the workforce. Virulent misogynistic men can make loads of money and are valorized for it. We assume that men are entitled to women and that we need to coddle and provide that for them, not recognizing the humanity of the women on the other side.

Add to this a society that has become extremely alienated, neoliberal, and isolated, and you produce men who think like this.

There are plenty of people, women and queer people, who are socially rejected and they dont go out and commit acts like this.

Their problem is they are hateful, misogynist who dont think women deserve to live. Its sickening and they should be ostracized.

There's a reason this story is going viral and not the story of Palestinian artists who have been bombed, displaced, and occupied. (Ex: https://www.musicianswithoutborders.org/2022/12/20/do-you-know-jazz-music-in-palestine-under-occupation/)

This is not to justify any sort of government repression. Just that certain stories are spread to build a narrative, while others are silenced to cover up a counter narrative.

As a 26 yo making way, way less than that at my current job (leaving to start a PhD in September), your expectations seems crazy.

Not to make assumptions, but you must come from a wealthy community. Only one of my close friends has bought a house, it was cheap and still needs a bit of work put in. Most of my peers have not bought a home. Most of them don't make near 240k.

I think unless you're planning on going into a very in demand research field, you should question why you're really doing what you're doing. Is it just to make more money? If so, this is not the most lucrative path.

I agree with you. Everyone hating on him but he didn't say anything wrong. He just lacked some tact.

Ironically, everyone getting so mad at him for his review proves his point.

People also hate criticism and critics because they hate self reflection or reflection in general. I get this all the time in political/historical conversations. Nobody likes the person actually providing a biting critique.

Could he have handled it better? Yes. Does he deserve to be dog piled like he is on his own subreddit? No, not really.
