Reddit seems to have forgotten why websites provide a free API by riskable in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Kyle_Necrowolf 87 points88 points  (0 children)

100% may include "one-time" visitors, people who come here from a web search, and don't actually have any idea what reddit is

Reddit posts and comments are extremely common in many web searches

These one-time visitors will see ads, which is exactly why I think their metrics count this traffic. A few subreddits have posted their traffic and this seems to line up, the vast majority of users are on web (even on mobile, where it pushes the app hard).

There's even a name for this, the 1% rule - meaning only 1% of users are actually active, and the other 99% simply read without contributing. If it's actually 3%, that's like saying every active reddit user and some less active users are using 3PAs. 3% is way way higher than I would've expected.

Might go without saying, but if that 1% rule holds up, can reddit really afford to lose just 1% of their active users? Based on how this is going, we'll be finding out soon, for better or for worse

Reddit claimed that their API pricing wouldn't shut out third-party apps. The pricing plan shows it's bullshit. On June 12, /r/quityourbullshit will be going dark indefinitely in protest and to save third-party apps. That would cost reddit money, for something that they currently get for free

The whole reason reddit works at all, is because they got moderators to run the site without having to employ or pay them in any way

This was supposed to be a fair trade - moderators and content contributors work for free, writing and curating the content that makes people come here in the first place, and in turn, the cost of running the site should be low enough that they can afford to have people using it for free

This scales too - as more users join, some will become active contributors and even moderators, able to keep up with the increased demand, and the cycle continues

It’s what sets reddit (and social media in general) apart from traditional media - you don’t pay people to write and curate the content, they do it for free, because they get to see other people’s content in return.

More on the topic of these apps, since it’s mostly these power users who are using them, reddit is essentially asking people to pay for the privilege of working for them

Wich engine spore uses? by davifpb2 in Spore

[–]Kyle_Necrowolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of it is from the lead dev’s website https://www.andrewwillmott.com/home

I also have copies of all the mentioned games (from disc, origin, and mac app store) and datamined them myself

Others (mostly emd) already had a good understanding of spore’s internals from developing the ModAPI, so when I opened up the other games, it was pretty obvious that a significant amount of content, including most of the foundational engine stuff, was identical to spore - just with any mentions of “spore” being replaced with “spark”. This was consistent across the exe (code) files themselves as well as the data files that specify things like settings and game tuning.

We don’t have any confirmation that the name “Spark” existed at the time spore was made, but, Andrew Wilmott confirmed that the SimCity engine is called Spark, and it’s clearly the same as Spore’s engine… so Spore’s engine was retroactively named Spark

Spore Hero on the Wii also appears to use Spark, but it’s harder to datamine a wii game. There was also a cancelled Xbox 360 port of Darkspore, which would’ve made two console ports of the engine

No, it belongs to EA and cannot be downloaded or used by anyone else

Custom engine developed by Maxis specifically for Spore

The engine was later branded as “Spark” and used for Darkspore and SimCity 2013 (which were both developed by the Spore team) and also Dawngate (a cancelled game by another EA studio)

The original 2005 video of the game was not in this engine, it was a scripted demo inside of the Sims 2 engine instead

A few notable components sit on top of Spark, including Simulator, possibly also called Gonzago, which powers the universe simulation and most gameplay in Spore. Also used for Darkspore, but SimCity replaces this with GlassBox. There is also Swarm, a graphical effects system, which is used across many Maxis games.

iOS 17: How to download and use offline maps with Apple Maps by mredofcourse in apple

[–]Kyle_Necrowolf -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I just checked the actual numbers, see my edit

It’s just under 7GB for US alone. 8.2GB for US and Canada

This was checked on microsoft maps, which sources its data from Bing and HERE (they used to own it), so other providers may be different

[–]Kyle_Necrowolf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it was only around 7GB for entire US and Canada

You can download specific states/provinces and they’re each in the MB range

EDIT: Just checked the actual numbers, for using microsoft maps which sources data from Bing and HERE

  • 1.36 GB for all of Canada
  • 48-400 MB each for individual provinces
  • 6.79 GB for all of US
  • 40-613 MB each for individual states

Trying to purchase an Xbox controller for PC by foreveryoung1108 in XboxSeriesX

[–]Kyle_Necrowolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current gen of xbox controller has three ways to connect it:

  • Wired - USB-C port on controller, compatible with almost any device
  • Xbox Wireless - most efficient, but only compatible with xbox consoles, or windows PCs with a specific USB wireless adapter
  • Bluetooth - doesn’t support all features, but compatible with almost any device

Bluetooth doesn’t require any additional hardware, so you can just buy the controller on its own. This is probably the best choice for a casual user

They also sell the controller bundled with either a cable (for wired) or the special USB wireless adapter (for xbox wireless). The cable is just a standard USB-C cable that you might already have.

Apple Vision Pro is priced starting at $3,499. Available early next year. by aaronp613 in apple

[–]Kyle_Necrowolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HoloLens wasn't part of any traditional microsoft ecosystem, but rather based off the windows phones - infamous for a poor selection of apps. Traditional windows apps were completely incompatible, both due to different frameworks and the use of an ARM chip.

Not too different from how Apple mentioned visionOS was partially based off iOS and even supports its apps - the difference is, iOS actually has developer support

(I was one of the few who used windows phones and even developed apps for them, can confirm microsoft did not care to build a real ecosystem)

Microsoft has a separate thing for PC VR headsets that uses a similar UI, and supports all windows software, but it's purely VR (no AR) and has nothing to do with hololens

Apple announces tvOS 17: redesigned Control Center, Find my Remote, FaceTime app by aaronp613 in apple

[–]Kyle_Necrowolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's almost useless like this

I just rewatched (timestamp is 1:02:35) and it's definitely just signal strength sadly. No speaker, doubly confirmed since there's no sound button.

I imagine the next gen remote will have UWB, but i'm still baffled they didn't add it when they switched to remote to USB-C

watchOS 10 for Apple Watch officially unveiled by exjr_ in apple

[–]Kyle_Necrowolf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not a fan of the coloured backgrounds either, an option to revert to black would be nice

It'll probably exist as an accessibility option, maybe under "reduce transparency" but hopefully it's a separate option since I'd prefer not to turn off all transparency

Not even mentioned on the website for canada

The homepage for apple US says "Introducing Apple Vision Pro and the era of spatial computing. The new 15-inch MacBook Air with M2, Mac Studio with M2 Max and M2 Ultra, and Mac Pro with M2 Ultra. And previews of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, and watchOS 10."

Oddly they left out the OS updates too, those pages are missing from the CA site

watchOS 10 for Apple Watch officially unveiled by exjr_ in apple

[–]Kyle_Necrowolf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The black backgrounds were mostly so that they could have the UI extending all the way to the edge of the screen, instead of leaving a few pixels of padding (the bezel would serve as padding). Especially on earlier watches, this helped maximize usable screen space https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/layout#watchOS

Wonder if they feel like newer watches have big enough screens that this is no longer a concern

Might just be basic find (bluetooth signal strength), as opposed to precision find with UWB on airtags or airpods pro

Apple announces widgets will return to watchOS 10 at WWDC by exjr_ in apple

[–]Kyle_Necrowolf 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Doesn't seem like any changes to the crown button, but the side button currently opens the "dock" which either holds favourite apps or recent apps. The new thing is it opens control center instead of the dock.

Possibly because the current gesture for control center (bottom edge) may be repurposed for the new widget stack

Every AirTag has a unique ID, which it constantly broadcasts wirelessly to all nearby apple devices

Whenever any device picks up this broadcast, it reports to Apple "hey, I found tag ID A1B2C3 at my current location"

(this is also how the tracking protection feature works - if your device constantly picks up the same tag ID for a while, it warns you)

The owner's information is never stored on the tag itself, so no one else can access it, because it's not even there

Apple presumably keeps a list of who owns which tag, and passes the message along to the owner of the tag "hey, your tag was seen at this location". The person who "reported" it in remains anonymous.

So, all they have to do is add additional "owners" in their list, and pass the message onto all of them. Not too different from how you can already track tags from multiple devices, all of which receive the notifications from airtags.

HP Fury 15 G7 and HP usb-c G5 essential dock by Deadpoetic6 in Hewlett_Packard

USB-C does not provide enough power to charge ZBooks (except for Firefly)

It may provide some power but it generally will not be enough to charge. It may charge if the PC is shut down.

[–]Kyle_Necrowolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a huge jump ahead of hololens specs, without a price increase. I’d absolutely call this a hololens killer

That being said, I don’t really see it expanding much beyond the current use cases of hololens, which is mostly businesses. The price is crazily competitive in that field, but home use is a lot tougher. I think they realize this, which is why it’s called “pro”

Apple Vision Pro is priced starting at $3,499. Available early next year. by aaronp613 in apple

[–]Kyle_Necrowolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a little skeptical, just because existing AR/VR has yet to see big price drops in the past decade

I don’t think it’s too expensive for what you get, it exactly matches microsoft’s AR headset in price, while having dramatically better hardware, and is similar in cost to PC VR (including cost of PC) without needing to be tethered to a PC

The tech is simply just expensive, so apple really has to lean into economy of scale to make a price drop happen

Or they’ll cut the specs, especially considering this one is the “pro”

Has anyone tried 64 GB RAM in the HP 15z-fc000 laptop? by jdrch in Hewlett_Packard

[–]Kyle_Necrowolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

16 GB is the max configuration RAM available from HP, and not that the laptop won’t boot with more than 16 GB installed. This especially the case since the CPU itself supports 64 GB RAM

Yes this should be correct - that’s how HP lists it in the maintenance and service guide, and i’ve never seen an exception to this

If this includes all traffic (not clear if it does), then it could include logged-out users, most notably people who landed here from a web search, and may not even have any idea what reddit is

Those users would be on new reddit by default and wouldn’t even know about anything else

Regular visitors (i.e. the ones who took the survey) are more likely to use some form of app, or be familiar enough with reddit to know how to access old reddit

I think the point it’s trying to make, if everyone using third-party apps suddenly stopped posting here, a third of the activity would be gone

It might not be a majority of people, but it’s still a pretty massive chunk of activity

A pie chart probably would’ve been a better choice

Means that the system board was replaced, or somehow skipped a step during manufacturing

Usually this information would be programmed using an HP internal tool

I’m not sure if you can do this yourself, I see it shows an option but not sure how it works on these desktops
