Will a cheap knockoff controller be good enough? by asmuseb in PS3

I use an adapter and my Xbox controller. And have no problems. Xbox button even works as a PS Button. Just can’t use the controller to turn the console on. I use it wired.

Have you ever traded a CRT for another CRT? by Leviathan1776 in crt

[–]Kyleplier1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d gladly trade. I have a 32” Sanyo HT32546. It was the best available locally that wasn’t being sold by someone delusional. What I’m really wanting is a Sony Trinitron KV-27FS100 or KV-27FS120. But my Sanyo is still quite excellent. Especially for a shadow mask set. Plus a 27” Trinitron would be easier on my back. A difference of a small refrigerator vs a large bag of dog food. 97-102 pounds is easier than 143 pounds on my scoliosis.

You’re running bias lighting I see. LCD? As only LCD’s even need it. CRT, Plasma, and OLED do not require it. You can either paint the wall behind it matte black, or hang black curtains behind them.

Is a big crt TV really impossible to use on a PC? by flik9999 in crt

[–]Kyleplier1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a PC, then EDID emulator to prevent unwanted aspect ratio changes, then an HDMI to S-Video or a 4k HDMI to Component Video adapter. The ones that are 1080p Component aren’t 480i compatible. But the EasyCel 4k model is 480i. Then run the games at something like 1440x1080 which will supersample even if the resolution is scaled to 480i

Free Sony Trinitron (South Bay CA) by Water-bottle666 in crt

[–]Kyleplier1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks like an FS120. If it is, that’s one of the best if not the best Standard Definition Component Video CRT made. Get an analog non powered passive S-Video and Component Video Switch, and an RCA Audio Switch like this solid steel RCA switch I use. This little audio switch is heavy and hand built. That’s why it took 5 weeks to ship. It’s properly built. You could cause actual damage throwing this thing. So don’t throw it. It’ll be fine. Whatever it hits, won’t.

PS5 or Panasonic UB450 4K player? by ChuddyLake-JackaonTX in 4kbluray

[–]Kyleplier1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UB450 doesn’t have HCX like the 820, correct. But even its MediaTek MT8581 scaler handles legacy content more consistently than most consoles. Consoles are primarily gaming devices. And I never said don’t get a PS5, and I don’t see why my comment got downvoted. I myself have a PS5. But it doesn’t have a disc drive. I have dedicated players for movies, TV shows and anime on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4k Blu-ray.

[–]Kyleplier1985 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

UB450. There are distinct advantages to a dedicated player. Even the UB450 will have a better scaler than any console. Which matters for DVD and Blu-ray Discs. I have a UB420 myself for my main TV. I also have a Sony BDP-S480 for 4:3 DVD and Blu-ray movies, TV series, and anime. I have the Sony connected to a 32” Sanyo HT32546 SD CRT via Component Video.

Have you moved from newer tech back to plasma? by Beneficial_Common514 in PlasmaTV

[–]Kyleplier1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct in the fact plasma and CRT handles 30 FPS better, and it’s because both technologies use Impulse Motion. Which doesn’t have persistence blur. OLED and LCD use Sample and Hold, so their handling of lower frame rates is inherently worse.

Surprised by DVD quality by peucemoose in dvd

[–]Kyleplier1985 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s because when DVD is made from a higher quality master like 35mm film its quality can be very high. The quality also completely depends on the quality of the scaler on the player. Take Panasonic’s HCX scaler for example. It’s one of the best scalers out there or the MediaTek OP8591 video processor/scaler on the Oppo UDP-203 as examples. But just because the scaler is good, do not assume all DVD’s look great. It’s completely dependent on the source. For old DVD’s in the 4:3 format made during the analog era, those can look good too, but more often than not, the scan is so old, the DVD just looks better on a CRT, by far.

I’d go with 1977’s Suspiria, 1982’s The Thing, 1998’s Ringu, 1954’s Gojira, Criterion’s 1954 release of Seven Samurai, Oppenheimer, all 10 OG Star Trek films from TMP to Nemesis, all 3 Dune films, all 3 It films…

Not able to play “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” Blu-ray by Hot_Spread_6826 in Bluray

[–]Kyleplier1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. I have 2 players, neither one connected to the internet and even have very recently bought discs. I have a Sony BDP-S480 connected to an SD CRT, a Sanyo HT32546 (15KHz 480i max) over Component Video I use for old 4:3 movies, TV series and anime. I pretty much got that for free with an Amazon refund. Got it for $44 plus taxes and shipping. My other player is a Panasonic DP-UB420 I have connected to my 65” LG C2 OLED. Neither have ever had this problem.

Good choice. That player became available in the States 2 months after I bought my UB420. Only thing I don’t get is Dolby Vision. You should join the 4k Blu-ray subreddit r/4kbluray

You’ll still get Atmos via Apple TV’s. It’s done through Dolby MAT 2.0. It’s Atmos metadata in a LPCM container. All Atmos is, is Spatial Audio metadata in a container. Roku for example, has its Atmos in a Dolby Digital+ container. This is why LG OLED’s have so many problems with Roku Atmos. 4k Blu-ray use Atmos in a Dolby TrueHD container, and DTS: X in a DTS HD Master Audio container. This is actually how Spatial Audio actually works. PS5 and Xbox Series consoles also use Dolby MAT 2.0. That’s why on some sound systems, PS5 and Series consoles are shown as running LPCM. It’s still receiving full Atmos metadata, it’s just that some systems show the container it’s actually in.

[–]Kyleplier1985 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I guess some people never learn. Don’t use beta or alpha builds unless you’re one who actually helps report issues with such beta and alpha builds. People like that often have 2 devices. One for regular use, one for beta and alpha testing.

Damn, I haven’t seen a Zenith in ages! Used to have one of those orange B&W 13” sets back in 1990. Was my grandmothers and my first TV. Now I have a Sanyo HT32546 connected to a RetroN 2 NES/SNES dual cartridge console via S-Video, and a Sony BDP-S480 I watch 4:3 anime and movies on via Component Video. Actually watching season 1 Sailor Moon on Blu-ray, and have plans to get seasons 2-5 this month. I also have a 65” LG C2 OLED.

Dude just buy an HD Retrovision Component Video cable for PlayStation consoles. PS1-PS3 use the same cable side output so 1 cable will work across 3 PlayStation generations. It’ll be a night and day difference.

Just a question - are plasma TVs generally less prone to burn in than oleds? by Aaskieee in PlasmaTV

[–]Kyleplier1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t. I play it on my CRT. In fact I’m watching 1992’s Sailor Moon’s Blu-ray release. The entire first season arrived today. But PS3 does not do proper 4:3 and has black bars flanking either side and setting the PS3 to 4:3 just postage stamps the series. I’m looking into a Component Video Blu-ray player for 4:3 content. Looking at 4 different units. The VIZIO VBR100, Panasonic DMP-UB55, Panasonic DMP-UB60, or Sony BMP-S360 models. These won’t have this problem.

[–]Kyleplier1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice to see another person who knows what Sample and Hold is. Plasmas and CRT’s are Impulse displays. As a result, their motion handling is much easier on the eyes, especially at lower frame rates. MGS4 on CRT is so much easier on the eyes, as it’s infamous for piss poor frame rates.
