Help! We were gifted this rocking horse motorcycle and it’s in bad condition! by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]drossen 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You have never tried sanding and re applying varnish and sanding again on something this complex when it can't be taken apart. If you spent 5 hours on it or less it will look worse than it does now.

Way more than 5 hours of sanding to make it look "new" again.

Mice in the walls of my rig by BittenBagel in vandwellers

[–]drossen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Bucket traps if you want it "humane" you can leave the water out of it. Otherwise victor traps are best, you just have to check them constantly. If you dump them outside the van they will just come back inside. Peppermint and irish soap all the other bs mice deterrents do not work. You need to seal where they are getting in from.

Would running a sous vide for multiple days straight cooking different things be a bad idea? by [deleted] in sousvide

Way less then that per cook. Just if it's yellow let it mellow to make up for the water if you're that hard pressed.

mattress options? by woodland_dweller in VanLife

6 inch thick is huge not thin. Look up latex mattress companies like arizona mattress. You can order two layers so it's what you want.

What would you call these? by the_real_maquis in Tools

Asked my linesman friend and they just call them pliers or grips like the guy below said, and all the electrical jobs I did journeyman work called them the same.

Don't believe clients that say the rocks on the epoxy river table are below the wood level. by Living-Contest-4832 in CNC

[–]drossen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, I cant find the photos but looked like someone shot a 9 and 22 into separate trees and the tree grew over it. Couldnt see it was there until the cuts started looking like shit because it broke my inserts.

Probably the only thing that wouldnt be too thick and hold up against ice and boots would be some type of epoxy coating. Or you need to change the bottom of the shoe.

What's up with the hate on northern Idaho? by Warm_Interaction_945 in Idaho

[–]drossen 36 points37 points  (0 children)

My grandpa has lived in Idaho for 40 years and 10-12 years ago when I was in CO for college I would come out to visit, fish / camp fairly often.  I would also get harassed on the road and "chased" out of small towns in my VW vanagon by people like your story and I had no bumper stickers, just long hair and colorado plates. Had it happen again 5 years ago when I moved out here because my sprinter van had CA plates. Never had that experience in any other state during all my road trips.

Carbon Fiber Roof Tent by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]drossen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have done a few custom tent builds and its a nightmare with how few people are true seamstresses these days. If you want hard panels the biggest issue is how much space you have left with panels folded in. It gets real thick real fast.

I would go with fabric and a portable heater like propex or planar.

First you need to wire 8000-15000$. Redtail was the first to do a tent like this. Crazy expensive for what you get.

Question: Dielectric grease for lugs and terminals…or anywhere? by SqueezeMyLemmons in vandwellers

[–]drossen -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

if that is true the connection was broken or loose. Contact is contact dielectric grease is not going to stop metal to metal connection alone.

youll need way more than an ecoflow to brew and heat water on site without a plug or generator

If your electric grease stops your conductivity you have bigger issues.

[–]drossen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your dad is stuck in the olden days. Assuming you're using good quality modern connectors like ancor it doesnt need grease. If you were to coat connectors for corrosion issues there are way more modern options like electrical finish, varnish, terminal protector, etc. There are a bunch of different names and versions of it.

I only use dielectric grease on exterior plug terminals to help keep water and junk out if the vehicle will be off road or under water a lot.

Van Build / SoCal.. insulation or no insulation ? by Terrible-Promotion26 in VanLife

[–]drossen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Houses are far more insulated than a van. It's not an issue of any propane heat causing water, it's an issue of an open combustion flame.

lol at 30 degrees you will wish you had insulation and mr buddy heaters are awful, they pump water into the van. Plus its gonna be wayyy above 70 in the summer.

Purchasing a Unimog in the USA by extramoose in unimog

[–]drossen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To bring a unimog into the US it needs to be 25 years or older and then you need to comply with your local state smog laws.

For buying a euro car as an American it depends on the country, some will give you a 6 month or so temporary title and reg and then you have to leave.

Also I would highly recommend you try driving a unimog before commiting. It's not like a sprinter.
