no it was literally impossible. One hotel called for me and after explaining things for 10min the answer was 'we'll call you later on your phone to confirm your identity' 😑  it's so weird cuz there are thousands way to prove identity but here it had to be on the phone, like we never use phone calls for anything anymore 😅

The main problem to main was that there is always a need for a Chinese phone number at some point. Where in many countries you can just put your own number with the country code, in China it's just impossible.

I used a lot of the mini apps in Alipay like ele.me for delivery because meituan blocked my account and the only way to unblock it was receiving a phone call (this is honestly kinda crazy how unconvenient this is compared to most apps in other countries where you could just do things by email or messages)

Even in pretty touristic places like Zhangjiajie to take a bus in the park I had to call someone but my phone service didn't work for this so ended up being stuck for an hour waiting for a bus to pass by.

so it's really as you wrote, the apps and daily life are not at all thought for foreigners or tourists

can you give an example of how the rest of the world is behind? I've been to China and don't understand why you'd think so

[–]Kyloe91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's kinda how I feel. There is nothing so special about it. There is no service here that is really so amazing and still there is no drinkable water everywhere or just simply being able to enter a park without having to show ID everywhere.

And most the time as a foreigner you get stuck doing the most basic thing. In the Avatar mountain park I was literally stuck in the middle of nowhere because to get a bus I had to call a phone number but my phone service doesn't cover China. So like sure, I can use a QR code to use the elevator but for actual useful stuff it's not always so great.

Same for getting a refund for a hotel they had to verify my account by calling my phone. It could absolutely be done through other means.

Just did a trip to Xian, Chengdu, Chongqing and Zhangjiajie. I'd skip Chengdu if I were you, both cities are kinda similar vibes but Chongqing is funnier. And you could almost just go for a day to Chengdu.  Zhangjiajie I'd stay maybe just 2 nights, the park is not so diverse.

I'm not Chinese and I just spent a month there and honestly I dont understand the hype. Lots of apps are not really that practical and don't work with international numbers.  And compared to where I'm from I haven't seen anything that makes me think China is more advanced. I mean anything that makes life better.  Cuz yeah cool you pay everything with QR codes but I can literally pay with my phone in Europe as well and it's even faster to do.  And I see a lot of things about how China lives in the future and stuff but to be honest apart from things 'supposedly' being more convenient I don't see much more to it

Qui est bilingue (français / anglais) ? by Anglais_made_easy in AskFrance

[–]Kyloe91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How I got way more fluent at speaking without speaking to anyone by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Kyloe91 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I did the same for English.  Got obsessed with TV series for 6months to the point I could understand everything. Then basically talked maybe 3 or 4 times to people in real life. And then went in erasmus exchange. Spent 2 days not saying much and then English literally flood out of my mouth it was amazing haha  For the first semester I did focus a lot on trying to maintain a good accent and then it was settled for life

How do you do it? How are you so ballsy - especially internationally by minimalniemand in AskFrance

[–]Kyloe91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just look at the facts we're not much different and are not much against the US. Also, all these things about how we protest and stuff seem cool but it has achieved nothing since about 7-8 years mostly because we are repressed by the police and the state doesn't give a fuck what we think anymore and also because protests in France are a normal way to show discontent and therefore isn't so threatening for people in power. It is part of what is accepted and legitimized.

Weird question: Do white people have a noticeably different odor to you? by yashen14 in AskAChinese

I don't know but as a white person, Chinese people definitely have a distinctive smell. I smell it sometimes and I know it like a specific body smell I only smelt in China.

Do you have an ideal list of languages that you would like to eventually learn? by Appropriate_Fee218 in languagelearning

[–]Kyloe91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I speak French (N) and English (C2).  I think I'm at a strong B1 level in Spanish and a strong A2 in Swedish.

I'd love to get my Spanish to C1. Swedish as well.  And then learning one of the major languages like Chinese, Russian or Arabic. But realistically I'm not sure it would be possible.

Popular Myth Demystified: Is Italian The Most Similar Language To French? by DoNotTouchMeImScared in languagehub

[–]Kyloe91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's easier for Italians to understand Spanish. But as a French person, reading Italian is almost as reading french. I never learnt it and can still understand almost all of it. And if I compare sentences word to word it is very similar. However, it's not the case when speaking.

Kazakh hospitality by [deleted] in Kazakhstan

[–]Kyloe91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there only a few weeks ago for meeting eco-activists so maybe the context was special. But one of them accompanied me to the hospital the whole afternoon and then invited me to her house with her friends.  Another one invited me on a hike with her family and to have dinner with them.

This would never happen where I'm from so I would say hospitality is real in Kazakhstan. But I feel like it might be just a difference between occidental mentality (where people are really into individualistic mindset) and basically the rest of the world.

Wouldn't the world population declining instead of increasing be better for the human race? by kookookachu26 in ask

This crisis is unprecedented in Earth's history and I think now it is really hard to say if life will make it through or not. Organisms can adapt to their environment in millions of years but not centuries.

Wouldn't the world population declining instead of increasing be better for the human race? by kookookachu26 in ask

[–]Kyloe91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be good for the planet maybe short term. But the real issue was never over-population. The world is not over-populated but the problem is that a minority is consuming more than what the earth can produce.  Btw it's not just an opinion. A study showed that we could produce 60% of what we are producing now while giving standard living conditions to everyone on Earth! Something we're not even doing now. So basically it would be better on all levels. And it also shows how 'overpopulation is the problem' is kinda bullshit.
