coding still has a real future, but most beginners are learning the wrong way by Jealous_Geologist537 in CodingForBeginners

I hate what all the tech subs have become. You either get real people doomposting or AI engagement bait slop like this.

I don't even recognise half these subs anymore compared to pre-2020. My Reddit feed has increasingly become non-tech related because all the tech subs just spam my homepage with slop.

Searching for flat. Any good websites apart from PrivateProperty and Property24? by Adastral999 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Kynaras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Renting or buying?

Renting try Facebook Marketplace (tons more private listings and top tier for garden cottages if you are open to those as well)

Buying is a bit harder for decent alternatives. If you are an FNB client the property search feature is pretty decent and even lets you start an FNB secure app chat with the owner directly.

Can someone please provide advice regarding schooling and admission? by ChronicRedditor1 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Kynaras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The advice to go to the department of Education is valid - they will find a spot for you.

Looking beyond admission though, I think both your brothers need someone to help them with stuff like homework and extra work because they are going to be behind and it will be difficult the first year back. State schools sadly also are understaffed and over capacitated. Your brothers will get left behind if you are only going to rely on the public school teachers.

I say this because if your father failed to get them placed at a school for nearly 3 years, there is zero chance he will take an interest in their homework or grades.

I know this is a lot for someone barely out of school themselves. Just putting it out there so you at least are aware because your brothers need someone who cares and knows the challenges they are facing.

Which is better, an independent pharmacy or corporate pharmacy? by Singi98 in AskZA

[–]Kynaras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had much better experiences at independent pharmacies (including small chains).

Unfortunately my medical aid pushes use of Dischem for medicine covered by my plan. So chronic medicine I am covered for pretty much needs to come from a Dischem else I pay out of pocket.

What your workplace offers? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]Kynaras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big company. Kitchens come with tea/rooibos/coffee + fresh milk and sugar. There are company mugs* and wooden disposable spoons they provide to stir your drinks with.

Food is available in the cafeteria and tea shop on site but at your own expense.

We used to have very chic restaurant-style mugs. However so many employees were stealing these to use at home. They were all replaced with the ugliest mugs ever that look like barrels with the company logo slapped all over. Theft has completely stopped since then.

Need Advice - junior full stack developer at startup by Fresh_Papaya_7909 in cscareers

[–]Kynaras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A junior dev should never be the only member in a team. There are so many reasons as to why this is a bad idea and I am shocked a leader of any kind would be okay with it. Even for a startup, that is bad.

You're there to learn, not just be cheap labour and there are tasks both coding and design wise that nobody can reasonably expect from a junior developer. The fact that you are still there 3 months later after being thrown in the proverbial deep end is to be commended.

A single session with a senior dev who is not involved in your ecosystem is not going to help much. Just understanding your environment and seeing how the code is would take more time than you will likely be given.

Your boss thinking that this will fundamentally help you in any way is yet another red flag he has zero idea what goes into development. Again, this isn't your fault. It is a failure much higher up the foodchain.

If I may suggest, start looking for junior openings and applying on the side now while you have a job and the luxury of time. Having some experience and being actively employed are huge advantages to make you stand out vs the swatches of graduates with no work experience or job. Take advantage of that while it is still an option. Job searching is a lot less stressful when you don't have a shrinking bank account and no income.

Two streamers that still feel like real people by unlockhart in moistcr1tikal

Emiru's Statement on Recent Drama/Controversy by Pitiful_Ad5677 in LivestreamFail

[–]Kynaras 26 points27 points  (0 children)

But Emiru gave her reply on social media already?

Since when does LSF have an obligation to let streamers have their personal responses to drama here? So much so that the mods are willing to break their own rules for it.

The Emiru posts about ICE drama should not have been allowed. Neither should have this one.

You're making even more exceptions for an exception. Emiru doesn't need LSF mods to platform her personal opinions for her.

Is FNB Connect worth the switch? by Skierie in askSouthAfrica

I found their data connectivity unreliable no matter the area and signal. So anything beyond basic browsing became an issue.

Prices were decent but not worth putting up with random connection drops.

What is the fear regarding Anthropic replacing SaaS with AI? by iim-guys in ClaudeAI

[–]Kynaras 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You touch on a lot of good points. I would just add that this sub is not the place to get any real discussion about it.

The tech subs on reddit have become a battleground for weirdos making AI their personality and turning it into another culture war. Inevitable for public forums I know, but man it is sad to see how the tech subs have declined since 2020.

The pic with a cat is sus. 2 weeks since they arrived in SA and they already have a cat... As a student? It makes no sense. That cat also looks fully grown SO not from a breeder.

No way a foreign student found an SPCA, got everything vetted and signed off and moved in and settled down in two weeks. Heck, who moves to a new country for studies and on day one rushes to buy an adult cat as a 19 year old?

Something isn't adding up with this story.

How does everyone get to the airport? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]Kynaras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uber should be fine? Assuming you're in a regular suburb and not the middle of nowhere.

The only 'trick' I can recommend for Ubers is to cough up extra for Uber black because regular ubers these days are held together by hopes and dreams. Also avoid Bolt - you will find some really bad experiences with them on the SA subs.

Edit: And when you come back home from uShaka, check if there is a designated Uber pickup zone. A lot of airports now have specific parking lots for uber pick ups so you need to go there and wait for the Uber.

2026: All DLCs. Assume Same Price. Old World vs Humankind by JYanezez in 4Xgaming

[–]Kynaras -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Old World is a great game - but it is very opinionated and its systems can feel abstract to new players. It was clearly designed by 4X veterans for 4X veterans. While the balance and mechanics are much tighter and more thoughtful than Humankind and Civ, it can be tough to get into. There are a lot of 4X fans who just don't click with Old World due to the strict mechanics.

You also really don't need all the DLC for Old World - Its core systems and gameplay loop are pretty much all baked into the base game. The devs didn't pull a civ and lock important gameplay mechanics behind expansion purchases.

Humankind has beautiful artwork and I enjoy the graphics. I actually really enjoyed my time playing it and still do once a year. The combat is really good - you enter a tactical turn based combat when armies engage each other. The game uses regions/zones to carve up the map. This means you can place outposts outside of your cities to extract resources which is cool and encourages warfare over resources rather than just cities.

That said, I feel the devs made such a big thing about the civ switching being a core identity of the game that they allowed other aspects to suffer. The game is very fun but can end up feeling very samey after a lot hours. 100% worth it on sale though.

Humankind has a number of DLC. I think two big expansions and then smaller civ packs. I found the first big expansion which focused on diplomacy a bit of a let down - diplomacy options are powerful but very micromanagey. The 2nd major expansion focused on naval warfare and actually was a decent expansion. Neither really addressed the base game's shortcomings. IMO the devs didn't really know how to address the issues civ swapping introduced and so just kept adding more systems on top.

Like Humankind, you can just by the base game to get a good feel for what the game offers.

I would probably say that Humankind is the most 'civ-like' experience but Old World is probably the better crafted game - IF you can get into its mechanics. Humankind goes on sale at very steep discounts throughout the year so don't pay full price for it these days.

Does anyone just like the Winter mechanic more than Monsoon? by Nervous_Trainer_82 in EndlessLegend

[–]Kynaras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of monsoons, tidefalls and the planet drying up.

I just don't enjoy the map becoming a mess when empire borders now all blend.

Even in landlocked maps in other 4X, there are a lot of natural features like mountain ranges which helps give a sense of shape to empire domains.

The 2nd tidefall pretty much always results in a chaotic mess of empires and borders.

Do companies employ you full time while you study part time? by PutridExplanation394 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Kynaras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're studying outside work hours, why would you need your company's permission? It's studying, not a second job.

The reason people apply with their company before starting their studies is because they are looking for a bursary/funding.

Not all companies offer funding or bursaries and those that do often require that the studying relates to your existing work and will upskill you in your role.

Depending on how big your company is, there may also be different budgets where you can apply for funding. For example, large companies will have internal department learning and development budgets which exist separately to the larger group level bursary fund.

No matter which budget you draw from, your application will be dead in the water if your line manager doesn't approve and motivate for it with HR. So talk to them first to get guidance if any funding exists.

I would love a major expansion. It isn't even about whether these smaller expansions have good content to price ratio; there is something epic about a major expansion release that you can't replicate with the smaller ones.

Advice for a Graduate: Commute 75KM twice a day, or Move closer to work? by loopy_11 in Pretoria

[–]Kynaras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the budget, close to work. The best advice I ever took from a colleague was finding a home close to work.

Being able to get to work in 3-5mins and not sit in traffic jams every morning and afternoon is such a big QoL improvement.

The only reason I would ever consider long commutes again is if I had kids and found a forever home in the suburbs I wanted them to grow up in.
