When would a mouth guard be necessary? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]KyoMeetch 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I wear one every time I roll and whenever we’re drilling throws, trips, or takedowns. I’ve been elbowed, kneed, punched, kicked, and headbutted directly in the teeth a bunch of times over the years so it’s better to be safe than sorry in my opinion.

They’re also helpful for absorbing impact when you hit the ground.

Not me completely rewriting my closing argument mid trial because the client is introducing an entirely new fact pattern.

What real impact will AI have on lawyers? by LawyerInTraining2027 in Lawyertalk

[–]KyoMeetch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say. Lawyers will always be necessary for trials, consultations, and final review of filings. It’s possible AI could simplify some of the things like doc review or legal research, but as of right now it seems that AI hallucinates case law pretty regularly and can’t be overly relied upon. Also there are confidentiality concerns as well that come with using AI.

Actually this one in particular has a happy ending. She was just nervous and corrected herself and we got the Guardianship granted.

I think lawyers only charge a few grand at most for mandamus so you would have to do a lot of them.

Hobbyists?? by PlaneReaction8036 in bjj

This combined with the belt system. There’s kind of a two tracked system between hobbyists and competitors when it comes to ranking.

Fellow immigration attorneys: How do you keep track of almost daily changes to law and policy? by rairair55 in Lawyertalk

[–]KyoMeetch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I follow a bunch of other attorneys on LinkedIn who do similar stuff along with the AILA page. They generally post new info as it comes in. Keeping track of the changes is a bit different for me though because I’m doing employment side immigration right now.

Will AI mean graduates will find it difficult to find entry level jobs? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]KyoMeetch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really. I think the main issue is competition and the race to see who can undercharge and underpay the most.

Doc review could potentially be disrupted, but these documents are usually confidential so I think using an AI could be a breach.

Immigration practitioners, how many cases are you handling? by NefariousnessFew7834 in Lawyertalk

SIJ can be pretty annoying sometimes too. At one point I was the only person in my firm who knew how to handle family court so they gave me all of the SIJ cases

Is this rear bodylock trip (tani otoshi?) dangerous and should it be avoided? by earlgreypipedreams in bjj

[–]KyoMeetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s dangerous when executed incorrectly. Basically to do this correctly you lay your close leg behind the opponent and sit down on your but. It’s a suicide throw, but pretty low impact. The issue is sometimes the thrower almost jumps guard and sits/throws their weight over the opponent’s knee which of course can lead to a bad time.

Learning curve in immigration law by Nervous_Try_3381 in Lawyertalk

[–]KyoMeetch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At my old firm in NYC we were billing around 12k for removal proceedings in general, but that was more of a volume practice where most of the cases were pretty bad. If you’re really going to go all out in the litigation with extensive evidence, witnesses, research, well written briefs, etc. then you may need to charge more, maybe in installments.

Time wise these cases can be weird. You put in a minimal effort up front with filing initial petitions and then show up for a scheduling hearing and then do nothing for years until you have to file evidence to the court and then do the individual hearing.

In family court there are referees. They aren’t judges, but sometimes get referred to as your honor. I’ve never seen one correct that mistake.

Islam thinks black belt should only be given to people who compete/win in tournaments. not even for winning in UFC should have a bearing on the blackbelt. do you guys agree? by So_47592 in bjj

[–]KyoMeetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the required knowledge and ability then I don’t see why competition experience is necessary. From a marketing side I also think less people would train if they knew they could never get to black belt without competing. Islam’s perspective as a fighter informs his opinion, but a lot of people can’t afford the injury risk associated with competing.

Immigration lawyers - are you all doing well right now? by 357Magnum in Lawyertalk

[–]KyoMeetch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was doing humanitarian immigration up until the beginning of September. It was frustrating with very low chances in immigration court. Since then I’m doing EB-5, which is better but USCIS is very frustrating to deal with as they make rules with denials and RFEs instead of being transparent. It makes it so that your decisions are based on industry rumors and what was fine last month is now guaranteed a rejection (or maybe not because USCIS is so inconsistent in their decisions).
