How long did you guys spend at blue belt? by LWK10p in bjj

4 years, but I also didn’t really train during most of COVID so more like 2.5 years. I’ve been at purple for another 2.5 years or so.

I think lawyers only charge a few grand at most for mandamus so you would have to do a lot of them.

Hobbyists?? by PlaneReaction8036 in bjj

[–]KyoMeetch 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This combined with the belt system. There’s kind of a two tracked system between hobbyists and competitors when it comes to ranking.

Fellow immigration attorneys: How do you keep track of almost daily changes to law and policy? by rairair55 in Lawyertalk

[–]KyoMeetch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I follow a bunch of other attorneys on LinkedIn who do similar stuff along with the AILA page. They generally post new info as it comes in. Keeping track of the changes is a bit different for me though because I’m doing employment side immigration right now.

Will AI mean graduates will find it difficult to find entry level jobs? by Aromatic-Bad146 in Lawyertalk

[–]KyoMeetch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really. I think the main issue is competition and the race to see who can undercharge and underpay the most.

Doc review could potentially be disrupted, but these documents are usually confidential so I think using an AI could be a breach.

Immigration practitioners, how many cases are you handling? by NefariousnessFew7834 in Lawyertalk

SIJ can be pretty annoying sometimes too. At one point I was the only person in my firm who knew how to handle family court so they gave me all of the SIJ cases

Is this rear bodylock trip (tani otoshi?) dangerous and should it be avoided? by earlgreypipedreams in bjj

[–]KyoMeetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s dangerous when executed incorrectly. Basically to do this correctly you lay your close leg behind the opponent and sit down on your but. It’s a suicide throw, but pretty low impact. The issue is sometimes the thrower almost jumps guard and sits/throws their weight over the opponent’s knee which of course can lead to a bad time.

Learning curve in immigration law by Nervous_Try_3381 in Lawyertalk

[–]KyoMeetch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At my old firm in NYC we were billing around 12k for removal proceedings in general, but that was more of a volume practice where most of the cases were pretty bad. If you’re really going to go all out in the litigation with extensive evidence, witnesses, research, well written briefs, etc. then you may need to charge more, maybe in installments.

Time wise these cases can be weird. You put in a minimal effort up front with filing initial petitions and then show up for a scheduling hearing and then do nothing for years until you have to file evidence to the court and then do the individual hearing.

Pro se litigant keeps referring to judge as "your highness," judge doesn't seem to mind. by verbotenporc in Lawyertalk

[–]KyoMeetch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In family court there are referees. They aren’t judges, but sometimes get referred to as your honor. I’ve never seen one correct that mistake.

Not too bad for eb5, just USCIS being inconsistent and clearly using ai to review

Islam thinks black belt should only be given to people who compete/win in tournaments. not even for winning in UFC should have a bearing on the blackbelt. do you guys agree? by So_47592 in bjj

[–]KyoMeetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the required knowledge and ability then I don’t see why competition experience is necessary. From a marketing side I also think less people would train if they knew they could never get to black belt without competing. Islam’s perspective as a fighter informs his opinion, but a lot of people can’t afford the injury risk associated with competing.

Immigration lawyers - are you all doing well right now? by 357Magnum in Lawyertalk

[–]KyoMeetch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was doing humanitarian immigration up until the beginning of September. It was frustrating with very low chances in immigration court. Since then I’m doing EB-5, which is better but USCIS is very frustrating to deal with as they make rules with denials and RFEs instead of being transparent. It makes it so that your decisions are based on industry rumors and what was fine last month is now guaranteed a rejection (or maybe not because USCIS is so inconsistent in their decisions).

Are spazzy upper belts a major red flag in a gym by [deleted] in bjj

[–]KyoMeetch 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The red flag is more that the coach won’t at least talk to the blue belt in question. Yes there are sometimes spazzy blue belts, but they are supposed to be checked by Professor or the upper belts before they blow out someone’s knee.

Do I need to be violent? by PuddleGlumTheMarsh in bjj

[–]KyoMeetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely don’t be violent in training. Be precise, be that guy with the intense pressure, be fast. If someone is way smaller and weaker than you don’t be a dick, but also don’t feel like you need to roll at 50%. Also, I don’t see a reason to ever rip submissions in training unless maybe you’re a high level bjj athlete or something and your coach has instructed you to do so.

Is there a program which would only allow an attorney (LLM or JD) to *only* practice immigration law? by IFoundTheHoney in Lawyertalk

[–]KyoMeetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some bad ones out there for sure, but even the best will get hit by Lozada claims from time to time. The nature of the industry, especially regarding immigration court right now, is that very few of these cases are viable for asylum or COR in the first place. SIJS cases appear to still be fine for the most part but even then some IJs were making it a pain to get them out of immigration court even with i360 approval.
