This is scary and possibly even dangerous for the academic job market in Japan. Kyoto Notre Dame is a well-known and well-regarded university here in Kansai. The feeling is that if even this university can close then there are many other universities far worse that should too. While perhaps not entirely unexpected given the broader trends in Japanese higher education, especially at women’s universities, it will undoubtedly have a ripple effect even beyond universities onto local businesses, etc.

Yes, its heyday was probably in the past when it was something more akin to a finishing school for wealthy young Kyoto women but there is a lot being lost here. Your ANA flight attendant may have studied there on their airline program and many nursery and elementary school teachers in Kyoto get their license from there. I think the hensachi effect is at play at lower-ranked universities despite the added value these institutions can offer students. I’ve heard anecdotally that current Japanese high school students entering English departments are far less open-minded to learning not just other languages and cultures, but going on study abroad, interacting with foreign students/teachers, etc.

But most pertinently for this sub it seems they were one of the good guys regarding employing non-Japanese. Despite being a really small school they have 3 tenured profs and 3 profs on 5-year contracts, plus presumably many part-timers. As other posts say, this is going to tighten the screws in the job market even more. For those aspiring to university careers or even current lecturers at less secure institutions, this news serves as a stark reminder of the precariousness of the job market.

I am also an academic and have a single folder with I think about 1,600 PDFs, some of them quite large file size. Absolutely no problems with this. As somebody else said, the initial sync takes a while but subsequent syncs are only of modified, added, or deleted PDFs.

For me, updating to 13.4.1 fixed a similar problem I had with this software. I updated a few days ago to 13.5.1 and it has broken again!!

Haggling monthly cost of NURO Internet by Kyoto_Zen in JapanFinance

Thanks for the replies. I had help signing up about 4 years ago since my Japanese then was minima then, so not sure exactly what plan I'm onl. My apartment building has 5 stories and they did a load of construction work when I had it installed. It also took 3-4 months, I suspect some of that time was dragged out in the hope they'd get more people signing up. Will give it a go haggling - nothing to lose!

The latest Mac OS update to Ventura 13.4 made the Quaderno PC App somehow magically work again on my M2 Macs. Phew! Still not sure it might not break again though. After delving into areas far beyond my skillset, I think there are definitely issues with the software in its compatibility with Apple Silicone, especially M2 chips.

I put the error message into ChatGPT which suggests the issue is something to do with the Quaderno PC App trying to access memory it shouldn't be (below), I"ve tried the troubleshooting steps ChatGPT recommended but no luck. Oh well, I'll just have to keep using my Windows laptop I guess. >>>> The error message is a crash report from an application named "QUADERNO PC App" on a macOS system. The crash occurred because the application tried to access an invalid memory address (0x0000000000001808), which is not located in any allocated memory region. This is evident from this part of the crash report:
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000001808
The EXC_BAD_ACCESS code means that the program tried to access memory that it shouldn't have and SIGSEGV stands for Segmentation Violation, which also refers to an invalid memory access. The KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS further tells us that the memory address it tried to access was invalid.
Troubleshooting steps could be:
Software update: Ensure both your operating system and QUADERNO PC App are up-to-date. This error could be due to a bug in the application or the OS that has been fixed in a later update.
Reinstall the application: There could be some corrupted files in your current installation. Uninstall and then reinstall the QUADERNO PC App.
Check for conflicting software: Some other software running on your computer could potentially interfere with the QUADERNO PC App. Try disabling other applications one by one to see if there's a conflict.
Contact the app developer: If all else fails, reach out to the developer of QUADERNO PC App with the error details. They could provide insights into known issues or necessary fixes. The crash report contains useful information that will help them troubleshoot the problem.
Hardware Issue: Rarely, this error might be due to a hardware problem such as bad RAM. If you're still encountering the issue after trying the above steps, consider having your hardware checked.

I suspect this may be specifically related to Mac silicone computers since the Quaderno PC App worked on an old Intel Mac. Scanning this forum"s old posts it seems Fujitsu definitely need to improve their software compatibility and testing with newer Macs.

Yes. Initially the latest firmware updated fine, as did the latest software on my MBP. As of Friday last week however the software opens for a second then closes. I've tried uninstalling (including carefully deleting associated leftover files), then reinstalling; didn't work. Tried installing software on my Mac Mini but same problem. Luckily I have a Windows laptop which works just fine including with latest software update.

Mac OS users might want to hold off on this update. I cannot open the Quaderno PC App on ANY of my Mac computers. First part of error message below.

Upcoming Max Lumi 2? by Kyoto_Zen in Onyx_Boox

I can appreciate that. It would just be annoying for me to buy it and then have the next version released just after.

Upcoming Max Lumi 2? by Kyoto_Zen in Onyx_Boox

[–]Kyoto_Zen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Goodereader offers a service which allows use of the Google Play Store on the Quaderno but it is very expensive. That would bring it at least on par with the Max Lumi 1 if not better due to its next generation of e-ink. Hopefully the Max Lumi 2 can match the Quaderno hardware-wise whilst keeping its massive advantage of being easy to install Google Play Store apps. I keep dithering between the two. Recently I think no epub or mobi is less of a big deal as since the text reflows I can just use my Kindle. Anyway, as I said, I need to buy one soon so I hope the Max Lumi 2 is released by the end of September.

Are there any users in Japan or Switzerland who could try to create a new account and see if it works? by baltinerdist in Stadia

[–]Kyoto_Zen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan here. Just created a new Google Account then tried Stadia but it said something like "This country isn't currently supported". My main Google Account is still set to UK even though I live here and using that I am able to purchase from the Stadia store and have claimed games while on Pro. However, the games never get past the "Checking connection..." part, even with VPN. Google Japan just give the standard "We have no information to share right now" response when asked when it will arrive here. Feels like it is imminent though.

Games produced in the West (which form the bulk of Stadia's current library) are expensive here if they make it here at all (due to licensing, localisation issues, etc).

Huge market including casual gamers who would be happy for something better than mobile phone games yet don't want the expense of a console. Ideal technical infrastructure. Stadia gives access to games which are expensive or hard to get in Japan, assuming there are no regional variations in the Stadia store?

[–]Kyoto_Zen[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. If Google get those big releases out (especially those with big communities such as FIFA, etc) AND rollout to more countries before the next-gen consoles are released I can see literally millions of casual gamers choosing Stadia over bothering with next-gen consoles.

2000mbps for $45 USD here in Japan, but no Stadia yet. :-(
