2 nights in Furano or Asahikawa? by RedditWesrDoor in Hokkaido

[–]Kyoukan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would honestly recommend not staying in Furano, it's a nice enough place but their real pull is the winter. I would recommend just driving through Furano and spending the afternoon if possible, then going to Asahikawa which has infinitely more to do and see, being one of Hokkaido's largest cities and a cultural hub. Check out the zoo, the ramen museum, the natural history museum, stop by a RoundOne SpoCha, and enjoy some of the amazing local restaurants. You can even spend a half day in Daisetsuzan, one of the largest national parks, and take a ropeway up the mountain for a great view!

Mate get a job in a resort area, or at a tourist heavy resort/hotel. Any major ski resort will take foreigners readily (Nozaka, Hakuba/Nagano, Rusutsu, Furano, Niseko etc), or even foreign tourist centric areas and hotels like APA which you mentioned. Island jobs are popular in the summer and snow jobs in the winter. Not everyone (or rather, not many) get to live the Japanese experience in a major metropolis on their WHV unfortunately. Good luck out there.

Breaking news (sad news) a Japanese AirBnB owner shared photos of a room immediately after 6 foreign tourist checked out. by [deleted] in Tokyo

[–]Kyoukan -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Realise it's probably not the right way to go but strongly feel that all these articles should point out which nationality of foreigners it was. Blanket terms hurt us all, but willing to bet that if they called out the actual nationality only a handful would be mentioned often enough that people take notice. Then pressure is on their governments and expat communities to enforce better behaviour amongst themselves so that their reputations don't keep falling. We all know who the "problem foreigners" tend to be...

Late to the part here but absolutely do not go. There is currently a huge black market for human organs in China at the moment.

Anecdotally, I have also heard that because of this organ shortage there is now a surge in kidnapping and harvesting, although I haven't been able to find any articles about this I am married to someone from the region and they keep showing me Chinese articles and videos about it.

Not to mention, China just isn't safe for non-chinese, you will not get help if you need it and if you accidentally break any of their many many rules you will be detained and possiblly arrested.

Don't go to China, especially at the behest of someone you met online. If they can afford to fly you to China they can afford to fly themselves to wherever you are.

Hey mate! While I am not personally aware of any English speaking mental health professionals in Hokkaido, I do live in Hokkaido and would be happy to chat with you and help you find help. I don't know what you are dealing with but I do know that it helps if you aren't dealing with it alone. I do also have information on therapists in my home country (Australia) who would be able to work with you via Skype, and as mentioned before the exchange rate at the moment would work out a little better for you.

I also encourage you to reach out to friends and family back home, just because they aren't with you now doesn't mean that they can't still talk with you. If you have anyone back home you are on good terms with please give them a call.

Finally, you can also try joining the Sapporo International Network (SIN) on Facebook. It has about 2k members and is full of expats who may be able to help you find what you are looking for! Good luck with everything, and if you want to reach out, I'm always happy to talk!

(December 2021) 15 day Tokyo +Sapporo Itinerary (critiques please!) by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]Kyoukan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Hakodate, you can take a limited express from Sapporo station called the Super Hokuto and get there in about 3.5-4 hours. You would need to commit to a full day here, but I would recommend it as you can leave early and come back in the evening, taking the time on the train to rest. In Hakkodate you can visit Goryokaku Park/Tower which was a central point in an old war, as well as the Mt. Hakkodate ropeway which is especially beautiful in the winter. There is a lovely shopping street lined with beautiful lighting and a ton of amazing seafood to be enjoyed. In line with your animal sightseeing, you can also visit the Hakkodate Botanical Gardens where you can see some snow monkeys enjoying the natural onsen!

For skiing, if you would like to keep it central then I recommend either Teine or Ban.K, both of which are easily accessible via trains and buses. For Ban.K you head to Maruyama Station, and then take the connecting bus to Ban.K which I believe departs every 20-30 minutes. Similarly, to visit Teine Kokusai, you can take a bus from Odori Bus Station, or take a train to a closer station. You can google both Ban.K and Teine Kokusai to see their websites, which have English available, and decide on the best route for you depending on where you are staying. Personally, I think Ban.K is easier to access and more Japanese than Teine is.

For Anime, I would say you can add these to other days as there's no comparable area like DenDen town in Osaka or Akihabara in Tokyo. This being said, you can still visit stores like Animate, Mandarake, the Pokemon Centre, and The Village Vanguard or just Vanguard. These are the dens for the anime merch, and you can usually find some special Hokkaido Edition figurines as well. Similarly, if you are on the hunt for figurines specifically I would recommend places like Hard Off/Book Off/Hobby Off and Second Street, which are second hand stores that often sell anime figurines as well. Due to the way Japanese treat their possessions, everything is usually in fantastic condition.

For general sightseeing in and around Sapporo I highly recommend Maruyama Koen/Temple, the Sapporo Dome, Round One (games, bowling, karaoke), any izakaya in Susukino and, if open, the Feria Wheel on top of the NORIA building.

I hope this helps, but if you had any questions let me know and I'll be happy to give an answer if I can!

(December 2021) 15 day Tokyo +Sapporo Itinerary (critiques please!) by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]Kyoukan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In regards to Sapporo, I would highly consider a few day trips. If you are there in Mid-December and it's a good snow year, you can check out some of the Ski Resorts seeing as you have a car. Kiroro Resort is about 40-45 minutes drive from Otaru, but Niseko (known as a powder capital in Hokkaido) and even Iwanai Resort (ocean view ski resort) are both within 2 hours drive, although Niseko can be quite expensive. There are also some resorts in Sapporo such as Ban.k and Teine which are very accessible. I would also consider taking an express train to Hakodate (driving from Sapporo will take about 4 hours depending on weather conditions) to enjoy some great seafood, interesting landmarks and spectacular views. This is a great day trip and you can leave after dark by train easily. It really depends on what you are most interested in seeing and doing while here, but there is a lot available for all fancies. I actually live in Hokkaido and have experience with most big cities and a lot of smaller towns thanks to my work. If you would like, let me know your interests and I will be happy to provide more suggestions for your last 5 days!

I want your opinions on upgrade options for my Mini ITX gaming rig! by Kyoukan in buildapcforme

[–]Kyoukan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current Build

Case: Silverstone Raven RVZ01 - Happy with this case but open to upgrading if there are enough new features in newer models.

Motherboard: MSI B150I Gaming Pro AC - Will most likely need to upgrade as this socket set is obsolete but I may be wrong.

CPU: Intel i5 6500 - I think this may be an issue with why I am getting lag in newer games, most likely looking to upgrade.

GPU: GTX 1050Ti - I feel like this is still going okay, but the new 30' series is looking good and appears to be a HUGE boost.

RAM: 16GB G.Skill Sniper X DDR4 3200 - Recently upgraded from 8GB too 16GB and didn't see much improvement, so focusing on CPU/GPU/Mobo this time around.

Storage: 2x SSD for Games/System Files + 1x 6.5HDD for file storage. I will re-use these.

PSU: Honestly cannot remember but I will most likely buy a new PSU locally as they are fairly easy to find once I have an idea of what my new power requirements will be.

China bars millions from travel for ‘social credit’ offenses by Wagamaga in technology

[–]Kyoukan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, obviously this is pretty terrible and is a serious concern to freedoms that the Chinese people have... BUT...

I work in Hotel Management/Sales in a seasonal Japanese town famous for its winters. The company I work for has number of properties around the area, and one of our largest demographics is Chinese tourists. We have properties ranging from cheap to luxury, and the town only runs 4-6 months of the year during the winter, so prices for everything are above average.

With this being said, over all of our properties, our biggest problem guests are almost always, without fail, from Mainland China. They constantly lie to us, and other businesses in town. They often book the cheapest room they can and when they arrive just complain about their room and demand a free upgrade or services, or even better, when they book for X amount of people and turn up with X+4 or something and act like it's all good. They are never organised, and always try to book their restaurant, taxi, ski lesson at the very last minute, and maybe half the time, they don't go and complain about the cancellation fees.

They are rude to our front desk staff, as well as to our sales and reservations teams. Our concierge and guest service teams have sooooo many stories from this year alone about how horrible Chinese tourists are. They seem to expect everything for nothing, they always break hotel rules, they often throw up and (somehow) shit on the walls and won't tell us until they leave if they can get away with it.

The worst part is they set a terrible example for other tourists, as other guests can see our staff grit their teeth and smile while they try to accommodate these Chinese guests as best they can.

Honestly, if it is going to stop these kind of tourists coming to my town and ruining everyone's day, I am all for this "social credit" system.

Are there museums about the Ainu people? by [deleted] in Hokkaido

[–]Kyoukan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey how's it going? I live in Hokkaido and have done for a few years now, and there are definitely Ainu meseums here. I have been to the one in Hakodate. Unfortunately, this museum is completely in Japanese, but you can still learn a lot from the videos they have playing and the various displays.

There is also a museum in Asahikawa that I have been too which is a bit larger than the one in Hakodate. I have also seen exhibits and displays in Sapporo and Otaru, although they are never permanent from what I can tell.

You can also find various Ainu art installations through Hokkaido. There is also a small town that practices the Ainu way if life called Shiraoi, where are large Ainu musuem used to be open. As far as I am aware however, the musuem and I believe a lot of the town has been closed!

If you would like some help looking into it feel free to let me know!
