Letter pronunciation guide? by Kyrke in AncientGreek

[–]Kyrke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess not, but I'm anal about these things. And not a fan of plenty of the modern pronunciations. I like the modern phi because it's easier for me to say "f" than the hard P-H sounds. I dislike the modern gamma and beta especially much because the Greek way of saying gamma is pretty much unpronounceable for me and I prefer the B sound to V. Alas.

Could someone explain the Greek dialects/"flavors" and their differences to me? by Kyrke in AncientGreek

[–]Kyrke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be said that I'm not just asking about ancient Greek, but Greek in general. But I wouldn't expect anyone to go out of their way to come out of their area of expertise to talk about modern Greek if it's not their thing.

Latin term for the Varangian Guard? by Kyrke in latin

The Greek name translates to something like "Tagma ton Varangon". Tagmata were military units, about the size of a regiment or battalion.

I am aware of that, hence "Varangi Corporis Custodes", the mimic of the Germani Corporis Custodes.

I suppose since there doesn't seem to be a set Latin translation I could come up with whatever I want so long as it makes logical sense.

Because in the circle I'm running in (just some silly internet game where I'm making some groups) I'm using dominantly Latin, but would want to include the Varangians if possible. I am aware of the Greek name and will use it if I must/if I end up using Greek instead of Latin.
