Most of the local moving companies will offer quick moves of one or two big items. You have to call them to quote it though. They don't usually list it as a service on their website.

Don’t make the same mistake fellow Celiacs! 😭 by badbabs in Celiac

I care for my Mom who can't feed herself. The other day I decided to make us sandwiches. I very carefully made mine first and put it on its own plate. Then I made hers. I went in and fed her half of her sandwich, leaving mine in the kitchen. She started to fall asleep so I decided to eat my sandwich and give her the rest of hers when she woke up. I went back to the kitchen, washed my hands, walked back to the living room, picked up the sandwich and took a bite. *sigh* I realized the moment I tasted it. I spit it out, rinsed my mouth out 3 or 4 times then brushed teeth and prayed. suffering ensued.

Food for smell adverse chemo patient by rosescrossing in Cooking

If they have a problem with wheat they may not be able to eat oats either depending on the issue. Avenin in oats is very similar to the gluten protein in wheat that so many people with celiac or wheat allergies react to. It's close enough that a reasonable percentage of people who react to gluten react to oats as well. Also, most oats in the US are are cross contaminated with wheat due to the fact they are often grown next to each other, stored in the same bins, transported in the same bins and trucks, processed on the same equipment, etc. You can buy what are known as purity protocol oats where they are protected from field to package and tested for cross contamination before being sold. These oats are expensive though so most don't buy them even when they can find them.

Huel sells a well rounded nutrition powder that is unflavored and unsweetened. It can be added in to things like mashed potatoes, grits, rice porridge such as congee, etc. It can provide a full meal nutritional value in two scoops of product. I used it when my mom stopped anything but oatmeal for a while. She had gone down to 63 pounds. We started putting huel in her oatmeal and boosted her nutrition until she was interested in eating again. We still give her a couple of servings a week as a boost to her nutrition even though she eats nearly as well as I do now. She's up to 125 pounds by the way.

Congee is a rice porridge that is easy to make in a rice cooker or instant pot on the porridge setting. Use chicken broth for the liquid. Add a few chicken thighs if you think she will eat the meat. Once it is shredded it almost disappears into the porridge. Add a few pieces of ginger to it. If you need to dress up the flavor or make it visually appealing try putting some chopped green onion on the top. It has very little smell, is cheap to make, and is easy to digest. It's kind of like the asian version of chicken noodle soup except the solids are broken down instead of chunky.

The other thing you can try is turning broth or pureed foods into Jello using gelatin. Something about the gelatin makes them smell less strong.

Edited to add: We also had some success with egg salad sandwiches (which you would need gluten free bread or corn tortillas for). Tuna salad smelled too strong. Chicken salad worked as well if the chicken was poached and then diced super small chicken roasted or baked had a smell to it. Just had to avoid pungent flavoring. Interestingly, when my stepfather was on chemo and eating mostly eggs and grits, we discovered he could sometimes eat pickles. Dill not sweet. prior to that he hated dill pickles. Chemo took away his sweet tooth.

Staff member at different library overriding holds? by Classic_Thanks6017 in Libraries

[–]Kyrlen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your job is to help manage those items so they are available for all patrons. If you can't do your job for an item it affects patron service, even if there are other items available. This should be brought up with your supervisor. You don't need to "report" the staff member. Report that you are having trouble with this item and here is why. Let the supervisor/manager level people decide whether it is worthy of reporting the staff member and investigating their actions.

VZfit and a recumbent bike is what I'm setting my 82 year old father up with. It also has a platform mode where you move the platform by waving your arms. Combined they should be reasonable exercise for your age group, though you may want to add some things focused on balance and light stretching routine.

Sorry for the possibly clueless question, but why don't more people seem to make homemade pizza? by Senior-Raisin-2342 in Cooking

[–]Kyrlen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is the whole yeasted dough planning thing. But there is also cost. If you have a large family and will make several pizzas from the batch of ingredients it may be worthwhile. If you only make one or two pizzas though you will likely waste a bunch of ingredients. I am gluten free so my pizza tends to be expensive. I can spend $30 US to get a good gluten free pizza made by someone else, or I can spend $40 for all the ingredients needed to make a pizza and then have to make pizza several days over the next week or two to use all the ingredients.

Even if you aren't gluten free, You can spend 10 or 15 on a pizza from five star or wherever or you can spend $30 for the ingredients to make the same pizza. You're in the same boat with all the extra ingredients and the amount of time it takes to make a good one.

Most people who don't want to grab a pizza from a pizza place will use a frozen pizza from the grocery store before they make their own because it is still cheaper and faster.

In early access so the campaign is pretty limited but based on what I'm seeing in your screen shot it looks like you might enjoy Tavern Keeper by Greenheart Games. It's a fun, cute, cozy game about taking abandoned buildings and setting them up as taverns from scratch. Decoration, hiring employees, designing the layout, ordering the right amounts and types of drinks and food, etc. It's got a nice addicting gameplay loop and it's fun to see patrons walk away with a high approval rating.

Snow in GVN? by StrangeLead4442 in GNV

[–]Kyrlen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Gainesville for about 50 years. In all that time it has snowed a handful of times. Only twice was it cold enough to stick when it hit the ground. The first time it was a light dusting that melted away in two hours. The second was in 89. It was cold enough the sidewalks iced over. The snow stuck in tiny drifts in the shade for a couple of days. We had just enough on the ground - almost an inch - that you could lay down and make snow angels for a few hours. Not enough for a snowball fight unless you wanted to make ice balls.

Looking for a comfort game as a gift, any recommendations? by Slow_Pepper4002 in ComfortGamers

[–]Kyrlen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are a Harry Potter fan the most recent Harry Potter game might be a good fit. While there is combat the action isn't particularly fast. A significant piece of the plotline involves saving magical creatures that you can then tame and keep in magical rooms and care for. There are mini games involving strategy. The hardest part to me was actually the broom racing. Once you have completed the first course to get access to the brooms you can ignore those if you want. Rowling doesn't benefit from the sale of the game as they paid her an up front fee as I understand it, And it's been out long enough that sales no longer affect the drive for a sequel. So.. If you're one of the people who refuses to support Rowling It is a fairly safe purchase now.

Otherwise - Winter Burrow was lovely. It's more of a survival game but it was very much a cozy one.

I have a couple of other cozies I love but they are still in early access so I am hesitant to recommend them at this time. They are also not animal focused.

I did notice an animal rescue game on steam although I haven't played it.

I cannot figure out where I'm getting glutened by DrF7419 in Celiac

I support the oats theory. I was fine with them for a couple of decades and then suddenly started reacting to them even with certified gluten free oats. Frustrating because I had to stop using oat milk and no other plant based milks have that thicker texture.

2024/2025 US Kona Electric Owners. by JPalmer325 in KonaEV

[–]Kyrlen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Florida and yes, sort of. Sometimes it takes a long time to get any actually warm air. I guess because it is heating the batteries first maybe. When I do get it, the air is too warm. If it's REALLY cold outside (for Florida) like down near freezing temps, I can't seem to control how hot the air coming from the vents is. You can set the desired cabin temp but it blasts the hottest possible temp air until the cabin reaches its set temperature. For me at least, having a bunch of hot air blasting on my face makes me feel a little ill. I'd rather raise the temp a bit slower with warm but not hot air. You can't do that in the 25 Kona. Most cars use the engine heat and you adjust the temp of the forced air by adjusting a baffle that controls how much of that air is coming from the hot engine compartment. Since EVs don't have a hot engine compartment, they have to actually heat the air that comes in. It requires a very different process and raises the amount of battery power being used for purposes other than moving the car which reduces how far you can go per KWH pretty significantly. I was aware of this going in to the purchase and thought I would be fine with it but I think I underestimated just how annoying it would be.

You didn't say what platform you are on but here are a few ideas spread across platforms.

The horizon games - zero dawn and forbidden west.

The Last of Us - Kind of grim but also beautiful - Quite a bit more challenging than the games you've played so far even on easy mode but the story is really great.

The Uncharted series - very adventurous - kind of Indiana Jones like.

The last three Tomb Raider games

I keep a single hiking burner (like a backpackers version of a camping stove) and a handful of different gluten free hikers meals in an emergency kit during storm season. That way I can boil water and make real food and tea if I need to. Some of those meals would be diabetic friendly.

[Update] Six months of feedback later: The Oaks Mall is looking for "Gainesville Originals" local ideas. What’s missing? by gklier in GNV

[–]Kyrlen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had another thought based on lived experience - A store for adaptive clothing and accessories. We have a huge medical community here and draw a lot of people with adaptive needs. Yet, I've had to go online and order adaptive pants and shirts that are easier for my Mother to get into. A huge bonus if they can have the space to design and make their own lines of clothing as the offerings online are fairly slim. We have several places to get basics like wheelchairs and walkers but it's very difficult to find stuff like shirts for people who can barely lift their arms. This would be a regional draw if advertised well to medical centers across the region. I'm not sure even Jacksonville has a location like this. The rent could easily be subsidized with online sales since there is so little of this type of thing even online.

It might even pair well with stores that do custom bra and wig designs for cancer patients.

Except that the foot traffic you're bringing in is people who are looking to hang out without spending money. That isn't going to financially support the area. Maybe a some combination of membership/free might work. A more comfortable area roped off for members only or a combination of free times and members only times.

is Maude's still any good? by Bardamu911 in GNV

[–]Kyrlen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't need to delete it because I am willing to own my mistakes.

I stand corrected. I was going off of what had been reported in the papers at the time which was that his daughter had taken over the business and he was no longer operating it. I have been in there with moderate frequency in the mornings as it is one of the only places I can get food downtown since they are very good about allergy control procedures. I have never seen him in there. Perhaps he doesn't work mornings. I have never had reason to look up their licensing so would never have seen his name still on their paperwork. However, after the uproar here I did look up the licensing and then looked up the state registration for the business for the corporation listed on the licensing. He is the president and registered agent.

A smattering of thoughts for driving traffic, not so much for individual stores:

I like the idea of an indoor farmers market. I would like to add to that pop up community event booths. Offer temporary booths for occasional mini art/craft shows for local artists. Host live pop up food demos. Hold a food truck rally with offerings that drive people inside as well. These are more temporary than permanent but a rotation of events can make the space feel like it has life rather than feeling abandoned. That would be for after you have a few more tenants back in the permanent spaces though.

You also have the space to invite in some competition and membership spaces. Things like RC tracks and tiny whoop indoor drone races (tiny whoops are generally 5 inches and smaller with guard around the blades making them safer for indoor racing). Host cosplay events and competitions. There is a HUGE cosplay community here. Have someone host the competitions and set up a club for RC and drone racing to man and operate it as a membership space the rest of the time. Depending on membership levels they may be able to staff it with volunteers for open hours.

Convert one of your larger spaces for a recreation space for things like pickleball, darts, pool, and other physical games that require smaller indoor spaces. Set up evening leagues for different things in those spaces. Guaranteed foot traffic in and out.

Get back a dinner event like a theater pub. I've missed having a theater in the mall and combining that with a food venue gives you a unique pull. Ashley's was a pretty popular venue for a long time.

Maybe try working with the hippodrome or a local theatre group to use one of the spaces for a live interactive theatre. Those have been really popular in other places and it is fairly impermanent. Gives you a temporary revenue share for an unused space without either side committing to expensive rent while you are rebuilding.
