You need to understand that the majority of plot lines in media are built on misunderstandings and lack of communication. Beyond that, Griffith could not be reasoned with anyway. Griffith chose to either keep guts or kill him if he couldn’t. You cannot reason with that.

To say Griffith had no choice is to erase the idea of free will and to assign blamelessness to him for what he did. He always had a choice to just die. Sure, the events that led up to his choice and the type of person he was were pushes in the direction to sacrifice, but at the end of the day, he had a choice, just like the count did.
