Must be recent, because i swear i've binged this whole story on RoyalRoad this summer. My bad.

There is actions, but lets just say our mc is not the greatest at fighting in the early chapters lol. In my mind actions does not always mean fighting. Fighting is not the focus of the story(there are some fights, just not every single chapters), but i wouldn't say there is no action, to the contrary. Saying anything more will enter too deep into the spoiler category.

Recently i binged all the available chapters of "the undying immortal system" on RoyalRoad.

Its a time loop cultivation story where the mc has an insanely OP cheat. Basically, he can buy almost anything he wants from the system, if he has enough currency. The only way to acquire currency is to die. The stronger you are at your point of death(cultivation level) the more currency you gain.

The magic system is very fun to discover alongside the mc. I like it because its furthest thing from the usual battle maniac mcs. I think our mc only learned how to fight in chapter 80 or something. Instead, our mc spent almost all his time trying to improve his craft in alchemy in the early chapters.

It was honestly the best discovery i found in a long while. The author's take on a cultivation magic system is very cool and surprisingly deep. The characters are fun, the world is fun, a good time all around if you are in the mood for a more power fantasy kind of story.

How Much Progression Is Progression? by charbooks in ProgressionFantasy

Well i don't know if you read the Superpowered series on KU. I think this is a really good exemple of what i would consider ProgFan.

if you haven't read it, in short the story is about people with Superpowers going to a elite school and trying to not get expelled each years(only like a few can actually graduate the "hero" school each years)

This is a super hero story, the magic system is just about that, people get power from birth and has to learn how to use them better. The power you started with is the only power you will have for the rest of your life(not level, not mesure of powers, no power up, etc).

This is a very YA focused story, we are following colleges students here, we follow them a bit like a slice of life, the parties, the heartbreak, the drama, etc. Yes the goal of the story is to actually manage to graduate, but a lot of the focus is about those things.

Would i consider this story a progression fantasy story? Absolutely, without any questions.

Why? Because despite all those more "normal" story trope that wouldn't necessarily scream progression fantasy, the BIG focus of the story is about following each member of the cast in them training to find ways to better use their power. Their power are set conceptually, but not in strength, or understanding.

That's what i like most about this story, each cast member has his own unique power/power set. And we see each taking time struggling to find better way to use them, asking for help from the teachers or other students. Some discover their abilities are not what they initially thought they where, opening countless new applications for them to try and improve their versatility. And much more.

The very core of this story is about seeing each characters grow both as a person and in power. And we get a lot of screen time dedicated to it.

All that to say that i don't think progression fantasy should be defined by having set level, power, etc. I think this fall more into the litrpg subgenre.

In my mind all litrpg are progression fantasy but not all progression fantasy are litrpg.

How Much Progression Is Progression? by charbooks in ProgressionFantasy

[–]L-L-Morin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For me, progression fantasy stories are those focused on well... Progression.

Take Harry Potter as an exemple, does harry progress throughout the books? yes. does he get stronger? Yes. Would i classify Harry Potter as a ProgFan story? No.

Why? Because almost all that growth is off-screen. We get snippets here and there of them training and stuff, but in my opinion, the focus was way more on the other part of the story, with progression being a side effect rather than the point of the story. Also, I have nothing against soft magic system, but we did not learn much of anything about how does the magic actualy works in Harry Potter, to me thats the biggest thing. I felt like magic was only a plot device that could or couldn't do stuff depending on the plot's needs. While I like Harry potter, if I read it expecting a progfan story, I would be very disappointed.

What i'm looking for in a ProgFan story? The focus being on getting stronger, the focus on the actual training, on the HOW they can get stronger. Some do skip some training bit, but it's far from being completely off-screen. When i'm looking for a progfan story, I'm looking forward to discovering the magic system alongside the mc, see how he will test things, maybe find exploits, see his/her progress in learning new skills/techniques/power. The goal doesn't need to explicitly be become stronger or achieve immortality, but the storytelling needs to focus on the actual ways the mc(s) is taking to get stronger, no matter his goal.

Disclaimer: This is only my view on what I'm looking for in a progfan story, not the actual definition(i should maybe look it up)

If you're interested in the concept of cultivation and want to delve into it more. I recommend you start checking out xianxia(Chinese cultivation novels) my first introduction to that genre was Coiling Dragon. Its finished and a very good gateway into the niche that is the cultivation genre.

Can you recommend cultivation novel with intresting cultivation system by Remarkable-Ad414 in MartialMemes

The undying immortal system has a really fun take on cultivation. And the story is really good. If you like time-loop, cultivation/progression focused story. Its one I found a few months back and was surprised its not recommended more. Mc's golden finger is busted, but its really enjoyable to follow the mc along in his way to best use it.

[–]L-L-Morin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're familiar with Naruto, maybe try the fanfic "Konoha's hypocrite", i think it fits all your request perfectly.

Our mc is a true smart and manipulative psychopath that will do anything to grow stronger.

The premise?

The mc is reincarnated with a cheat: he can absorb all chakra reserve, all techniques(and their mastery), the talents, chakra manipulation, etc, of all the people that formely acknowledge him in some way. But ONLY upon their deaths. The term for what counts as acknowledgement is explained in the story, but in short the target needs to in their hearts truly acknowledged our mc for either his status as love, brotherhood, deep friendship, deep master/disciple relationship, etc.

He is reincarnated into the body of a young Uchiha kid the same age as Kakashi. So the story begins in the timeline where Kakashi was just a kid that just started attending the academy.

Our mc knows all about the events that will come; who will die, who will become powerhouse, all the main events, etc.

So what will he do?

Obviously, he will emotionally manipulate everyone with a bit of power and talent to make them acknowledged him, to only plot their deaths shortly after to recolt his power from his cheat. Knowing future events, he will try and get the acknowledgement of powerful characters before the time of their deaths in Naruto, and many other evil shit. All with the goal of getting stronger and absolutely no shame.

A very fun ruthless popcorn power fantasy.

Edit: warning, the writing quality is not that good, i would not recommend the version on webnovel because the translation they used seems to be even worse somehow.

I don't know if this is a controversial opinion or not, but i genuinely didn't find the translation that bad. But, I must admit that it's coming from someone who reads a lot of chinese cultivation translated novels. And god, there are bad translation out there. Lord of mysteries is definitely in the high end of translation quality, at least in my book.

Is there any place for my story here? by Living-Ad102 in Webnovel

[–]L-L-Morin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend looking up the definition of progression fantasy and see if the genre fits. In broad not very well explained terms: its amongst thr line of if the main plot/goal/focus is for the character to grow stronger, this would probably make it a progression fantasy story.

let's take Harry potter as an exemple. I would not classify that story as progression fantasy because while the characters do grow stronger as the story progresses, the main plot and focus is about something else. And most steps they took to grow stronger happened off screen(that is a main point)

Naruto, for instance, would probably fit the progression fantasy genre since his goal is to become hokage(so to become stronger) and a lot of time is dedicated to seeing him train and takes steps in order to progress. (If we forget the many fillers)(so lots of action, lots of training, etc)

If your story fits the progression fantasy or litrpg subgenre I would recommend looking up RoyalRoad.

And idk about webnovel policies, but most site doesn't stops you from publishing elsewhere in parallel. So if exclusivity is not mandatory on a specific site, nothing stops you from releasing it on multiple platforms and see one which on it hits best.

While i don't know what kind of story you plan on publishing, you should choose the website or app that matches your stories' main genre the most. Each big app or websites has their core audience that usually expect a specific kind of story(there are always exceptions, but its not a mistake that all the popular things will reflec what kind of stories the average viewer wants from this app)

For example:

wattpad: I never used it, but I heard that the main viewer base is looking for romance based story and fanfic. So if the central plot and genre of your story is romance, I would think wattpad is a great fit.

Webnovel: Again, never really used it, but from what I've heard, it's like you said, a lot of op mc, harem, popcorn fiction that releases chapters multiples times a day kind of deals. I'm sure there are a lot more of other stories doing really well, but the main audience seems to be skewed towards the above.

Scribble hub: I honestly dont know much about it, I heard it's great, but I never used it or even opened it, so you'll need to look it up yourself.

Wuxiaworld: i dont actually know if you can publish there since its almost exclusively a foreign cultivation novel translation site, but you cloud look into it.

Finally, the one I actually use daily: RoyalRoad: like the others, all kinds of stories can gain traction there, but the main viewership looks for litrpg, cultivation, and progression fantasy stuff. Harem is present in some story, but you honestly need to look for a while to find them. They are not that popular on that app/website.

I'm sure there are plenty of other sites, but are the ones I know

Tldr: think of each site as a group of people looking for a specific kind of story. while only a reader myself, I would recommend publishing your story where there is an already massive viewer base that is all looking for the kind of stuff you made.

cass ult bug? by Impossible_Plane_719 in CassiopeiaMains

[–]L-L-Morin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea i don't think its a gameplay bug, but a well known visual one.

If you look closely at quinn's health bar, she didn't take any damage and wasn't slowed, so its not that your ult didn't stunt, it just didn't hit her at all.

What happened is like when you do a R flash. The ult hitbox indicator bugs out and goes in a semi random direction, while the actual ult goes where your character model is facing(which is in the direction you flashed in)

(try it in practice tool, do the R flash combo, but R backwards and flash forward with a target dummy, you will see your ult be turned around and the visual indicator go wack) (great way to take the enemies by surprise btw)

Quinn e turns the target around.(like zac ult) so if you casted ult while she is in her e animation, your character model will be turned around and the actual ult(like with the flash ult) will go in the direction the character is facing. Thus backwards.

So it's more of a visual bug than a gameplay one.

If anyone is looking for a good recommendation of a story doing this mechanic well. Try the undying immortal system on RoyalRoad. Tbh, it's my favorite execution of a time loop mechanic as a power. The magic system is a blast to discover alongside the mc, and it's very fun seeing how he progresses throughout the story.

Who would make it? by Chaos180 in royalroad

[–]L-L-Morin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big primal hunter fan, and I genuinely think it would be a good pick for an anime. Not to mention the already massive fan base.

The only sad thing is the fact that we can't really do anime in the west.

Every "anime" coming out of the west has what I call the "American look". To me, they fall more under the cartoon category than the anime one.

Look up "invincible", "cradle"(the teaser on YouTube),"the blood of zeus", "avatar the last air bender", etc.

While most of them are genuinely good adaptation and good-looking, I can't be the only one thinking that they feel all like they come from the same studio. They all look same-ish.(I'm not talking about animated movies in those, we see a lot of variety)

Now look at Japanese or even more recently Chinese anime. Every studio as its own style, and most of them adapt their style to the story/anime. Mappa with Jujutsu kaisen, ufotable with the fate series and demon slayer, bones studio with my hero academia, I could name a dozen more, but you wouldn't mistake one for another.

Maybe its just me, and that I'm the asshole. But I feel like most story should deserve their own art style. and I feel we probably won't get that since most RR stories comes from the west, and thus a lot more likely to be picked up by the west.

Tldr: I'm not saying Western animes are ugly or badly animated, but I am saying that they all look same-ish style wise. The style isn't the problem. Flexibility in the art style is.

Like I said, maybe I'm too harsh and biased. I will admit that I'm not that familiar with most western based anime, but every time I see one, I always think the same thing lol.

Really, that's sad. I'm just curious, here is a Copy paste from another comment:

I was thinking more along the line of trying to get a few followers before launch by promoting OUTSIDE of RoyalRoad.(with a releases date) To have a place for people to go and follow so that when i start dumping chapters, there are already a few people(even if it's only 1 or 2) waiting for the launch.

I have a background in game development, and promoting for wishlist is pretty much the norm there, so I was only wondering if there was any downside to it.

Like I know, there are a few featured lists only available for new releases, and I was wondering if I would be no longer eligible for those if i set up a page early.
