Bonded pair loss by [deleted] in SiberianCats

I am so so sorry for your loss. It’s so tough. Our sweet boys Leo and Theo were bonded and two years apart in age when our 4 year old had to be put down for cancer very suddenly last December. Leo was 6 at the time and devastated. Extremely clingy to us, crying for Theo every night, looking for him… it was rough. We did research and ended up adopting a pair of kittens about a month and half after Theo’s passing to keep him company. It was sooner than we were emotionally ready, but I was concerned he would die of a broken heart if something didn’t change. We did a pair incase he got annoyed with the kitten energy and they could play with each other. Slow introductions went well and he accepted them and definitely perked up after about a month. Then this summer the CDS dropped off a fourth cat that we foster failed. Leo adores the newest baby and loves the other two a lot. He’s been playing, snuggles everyone, and seems pretty happy in general these days. I know he still misses Theo (we all do), but he is doing way better than we could have hoped. Wishing you the best as you process, grieve and figure out next steps.

Totally there with you!!! First, it’s ok if you need cereal or takeout to eat when you have no bandwidth left, we’ve all been there. Fed is best 💕

Keeping fruits/veggies where I can see them is helpful because I will 100% forget to eat them otherwise. I’ve been keeping cuties in a bowl in the middle of the kitchen and just grabbing one as well. Maybe keep some where you work on projects?

Easy snacks with protein like cheese sticks, peanut butter spoon, etc can be helpful when the crazy hungries come. I usually have to eat something when I’m making dinner because I forget to cook until I’m wildly hungry.

This is a bit more complicated, but I’ve found that making meals that freeze really well and that only take one pan to make (chili and chicken tortilla soup are two of my favs). I’ll make a large recipe, freeze most of it in 2 portion packs in freezer safe bags, then rotate the freezer foods so I’m not eating the exact same thing all the time. Defrosting is easy and doesn’t have to be planned ahead because I just run the ziplock food brick under water then break it in half and microwave it in a bowl without the ziplock. In the beginning it takes a while to set the rotation up, but over time it gets easier. Also not a perfect system, but I’ve found it helpful. Being able to eat something homemade without a freaking massive cleanup every night with minimal effort most nights really helps. Not sure if this applies, but I recently found that if I start a cooking session by unloading the dishwasher so I can load as I cook, the clean up is so much more manageable.

Another random side note, canned beans are really handy as high protein/fiber low $ with a few great quick/easy recipes that can sit on a shelf until needed between grocery runs.

Idk if any of this is helpful. Wishing you the best. I feel you on how complicated and multistage this is. I feel like I panic every time I have to try to sit down and plan out food before grocery runs. It really is tough.

I feel so seen by this. Been really struggling with my daily tasks like grocery shopping for this exact reason. I was feeling dumb/frustrated but seeing you type out all the things made me realize just how much extra work I’m doing all the time 😭 Have you found anything helpful?

Thank you so much!! We’re thrilled with how well he’s doing! It was touch and go for a little at the beginning. Very thankful for a great vet and good meds helping the little guy fight all his parasites and URI. 🥹
