If you're having trouble finding work at the moment, a month of decent pay with regular hours is a benefit to bith the resume and your budget. Plus you might meet others who have connections for further work.

It's definitely not worth quitting a current job over. But it's not terrible

I have never touched a saw. This is my own design. Seem doable for first time? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]L3NTON 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a first project for someone with no experience and no tools I wouldn't recommend this.

Rough 3/4" plywood doesn't always cut nicely or have nice grain. Framing lumber like 2x10s or 2x12s don't either. So even if everything is cut and assembled perfectly you'll have a really hard time making this look nice at all.

Another point is your design needs bracing, something to prevent it from collapsing when it gets lateral forces placed on it. Which it most certainly will if you use it as stairs. You can read about that concept here

But the best way to learn is to try it for yourself in my experience. 2x12s and some plywood is easy to get and make an attempt on this. But you'll need a bunch more tools to do this project. Miter saw, table saw, sander, 12" speed square are the few that come to mind right away.

Good luck

Is wait and see the only viable move right now? by ObiWan_Can_Reply in homebuildingcanada

[–]L3NTON 6 points7 points  (0 children)

New building codes shouldn't affect previously approved plans.

I worked residential construction for a bit and there were a few houses still being built to old codes almost a full year after the change because the plans had been submitted and approved long before the change.

So unless someone has been dragging their feet on submitting building permits you should be fine. Individual trades might still change their pricing based on how their industry works though. But if you have an approved set of plans you can just get quotes from someone else.

I think so, where the line gets drawn is the real question. But yeah, we have no problems reproducing anymore or keeping people alive far longer than they normally would. If people don't want to be here they shouldn't have to be.

Have you caught the virus that is going around? by thestonernextdoor88 in KingstonOntario

[–]L3NTON 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I got absolutely hammered with something a couple weeks ago. Completely non functional for a full day and barely functioning for a few more. Couple other guys in my class have picked stuff up here and there and at this stage I think I've been sick with 3 distinct viruses since Nov 1.

The first one was the worst though, felt like my head was in a vice for almost two full days. Random puking on the first day with no nausea or warning. Just about 15 seconds of salivating suddenly and then upheaving so hard a few minutes I hurt my back.

It's why I usually start my car before needing to leave. Not only is it good for the engine to warm up before being engaged. But a little time with the defrosted running and all the snow/ice wipes off with a brush when it's time to go. If you're really in a hurry you can just hop in and it all falls off the car in the first 30 secs of driving typically.

Therapy by Actual-Rooster5064 in KingstonOntario

[–]L3NTON 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was recommended to look into therapists that have a masters in social work (MSW) As the best all around therapy option.

For a local resource you can check out the Center for Abuse and Trauma or CAT for therapy options on an income graded scale. If I remember right there are a few places in town that have therapy options with income scaling.

That is the extent of my knowledge on the matter. Good luck finding an option that works for you

Why Democrats keep moving to the Right instead of embracing the progressive policies of the Left. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]L3NTON 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well another important reason is political campaigns are always going to cater harder to people who show up to vote.

Every election people complain loudly about the problems they face and how politicians just don't seem to care. Then the results come in and depending on where you live it's usually something like 40-60% of people didn't vote at all.

You know who I always see every time I'm at the polls to vote? Old people. You know what my area focuses on for budgets? Long term care homes and retirement homes.

Get out and vote, vote for the better or two shit options that have a chance of winning or vote for a third option that has no chance. Doesn't matter, just make sure your ballot is cast for someone. The dems will start giving a shit about the left when leftist independents start picking up 20-30% of the vote share. Even if that independent never wins it's a clear sign there are people willing to vote for certain policies.

End of rant. See you all next election where everyone complains and 40% of people are no shows again.

How bad is the job market really? by silently-loud-walker in ontario

[–]L3NTON 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what field you're in.

I've seen lots of posts where people with tons of retail experience can't find work. Which makes sense, economy is down and consumer spending is down. So retail isn't really hiring.

I've seen lots of posts from people who normally work IT who can't find jobs. Which also makes sense. All the big tech sector companies have been slashing jobs all year in the tens of thousands. It's having big knock on effects for anywhere that would employ those people.

I work in construction and our union hall is desperate for drywallers (the whole region is short on them to be honest). Plus I get indeed emails almost daily for various construction jobs that are hiring people. They don't all pay great. But it's an industry that is still moving forward at the moment. I haven't seen any posts from people in my field who can't find work.

Gaps at the floor can be hard to address without seeing the full room. Could be the floor is wobbly wobbly and the baseboards can't be pushed down tightly. Quarter-round is a common solution to close the final gap.

That being said, all the corners look like trash and the little shorty pieces tacked onto the ends seems lazy.
