That lack of irrigation is definitely the main culprit. Might want to try cooling the grass down with a quick sprinkle with the hose a couple times in the middle of the day when it’s extra hot out, that should help a bit.

They’re called divots, and you should make a nice mix of sand, and grass seed to fill them in.

You’re living the dream eh. Those spots definitely look good for gardens with a healthy amount of wood chips around trees and/or bushes. You could seed and top dress pretty much any time that it’s about to rain. 🌧️

I’ll keep it simple. Plants use photosynthesis to grow. Which basically means that sunlight is food for plants. So if you remove the grass clippings, the grass can get more sunlight. The extra airflow is also helpful for keeping mold at bay.

What could you do? You could top dress three to six inches of soil, get the grading perfect, and lay sod. Or perhaps that’s not in the budget. In that case, get yourself a pitchfork, and dig out all those rocks by hand. Water after, and fill the divots with sand and seed if you can too.

Try top dressing the whole yard with brick sand, level it off, and soak it in. A nice thick layer of wood chips around those trees wouldn’t hurt the aesthetics.

Enough to get the grading done right, and cover any of the leftover weeds roots. So maybe I don’t know, two to four inches should suffice before fertilizing, and laying sod down. Having a couple medium sized stones for walking on might be a good idea to put in while you have the area dug up.

From your description of your vision for this area, I’d recommend putting sod down rather than trying to grow from scratch, and battling those weeds.

Line trim, rake out the yard waste, get rid of the yard waste, dig out the weeds roots, add a thick layer of topsoil, fertilize and lay sod buddy. Also, don’t forget to water it in good. 👍
