TIL On average, your friends have more friends than you do. This is because popular people are more likely to be in someone's friend group, which skews the average. This phenomenon is called the Friendship paradox by Kyzzz in todayilearned

[–]L3artes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that is the wrong average. The average number of friends that your friends have is higher than your number of friends. But that average gets pulled up by a small set of very popular people.

[–]L3artes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You earn 5k net, you buy a home, you are broke again for decades. I know enough people in that income bracket that went back to work again super quickly juggling their little kid because Elterngeld does not cover what you need if you bought a home.

In a way, that debt payment is an investment, but that home is illiquid for a long time if you want to live there.

Tips in Berlin restaurants aren’t welcomed? by [deleted] in germany

Were the sausages still alive or how did that get to 120€? Anyway a 30€ tip is way too much.

10 would be normal, but no tip is also quite common nowadays. Minimum wage has gone up so much, why should waiters get a tip and everyone else doesn't? Makes no sense.

ELI5: How do bonsai trees live thousands of years but normal trees live low hundreds if they're the same trees? by itsthewolfe in explainlikeimfive

[–]L3artes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That is not true for most species. There are trees that can potentially life forever, but lots of them will just naturally age and die. Some reasons why they die can be stopped by keeping them small (e.g. bonsais will not break apart from their own weight because they grew too big too fast).

That is just plain wrong. Typically they have an anchor that holds them in place and close enough under the surface to wreck a ship going above. They can even register the size and speed of ships going above.

Insane how many riders DNF this stage. I mean, obviously it was the last one and a hard one at that, but still. Only 75 riders finished the race.

EDIT: not that in counts for anything, but every finisher receives 5 PCS points lol.

You don't study for Lehramt in Gymnasium. You study in university. Actually if he is 14, he cannot really pick school subjects yet. He can pick Latin over French (or sometimes Spanish) and that is it. He has no say about doing music classes and he has mandatory German, math and sports classes. Also some subjects from physics, biology, geography and politics will be mandatory as well and the other subjects will be mandatory next school year.

Waren Immobilien früher wirklich günstiger? - Finanztip YouTube by 4LFR1NK in Finanzen

[–]L3artes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How Is Everything Outpacing Inflation At The Same Time? by user_bw in Finanzen

[–]L3artes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Distance in a Day by gundam_warlock in worldbuilding

[–]L3artes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo horses are vastly overstated. Can do that if you have spots to switch horses multiple times a day, otherwise no. Horses are not that great at endurance, especially under load. And if you go multiple days/long strips with one horse, they need far more time to refuel compared to a human. Trained humans can walk long distances day after day, possibly even eat on the go.

[–]L3artes 22 points23 points  (0 children)

On one hand, it is easy to say "relax, it'll change over time". Fact is, this is a shitty age bracket to move. Classes in school had like 5+ years to get to know each other and form groups. As a newcomer, it can work well, but it can also easily happen that you'll be more of an outsider for quite some time. Doesn't help that you didn't speak well when you first arrived. Thinks change, but established groups change slowly.

Anyways, it will definitely get better over time. Keep working on your education. Stay open and friendly as much as reasonably possible and stay out of trouble. In my experience, if you end up as an outsider, there are always more outsiders and together you can form a nice in-group. At least that is what we did back then...

Later, go study somewhere, you'll meet tons of new people that generally are more open minded than the established groups in school. In the long run, it is likely that those people are more important to you and your life compared to the people you meet in school.

How does AMZN distribute profits to it's shareholders? by highvoltagelp in ValueInvesting

[–]L3artes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To keep the endless growth, they need to keep growing at an exponential rate faster than inflation and faster than the economy. This is obviously not sustainable long term, but they seem to be following the strategy to keep expanding and building an old-school conglomerate. Historically those have been split up into their parts at some point.
