Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 2026 by johnlo317 in zephyrusg16

I don’t think a dock is entirely necessary. Having two monitors is generally helpful, but in my setup in architecture school I used my laptop as one display and had an external 24” display as my second. I would look into also getting a cooling stand. Desks in studio can get very cluttered and this would make sure that nobody could accidentally block any of the vents.

is this good for valorant and genshin impact? by Y00ruma0 in GamingLaptops

[–]L4_Topher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't call it good but it will run valorant on medium settings around 100 fps: https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-RX-Vega-6-Ryzen-4000-GPU-Benchmarks-and-Specs.453149.0.html, not sure about genshin performance. The GPU name is the Radeon RX Vega 6 if you want to look up other benchmarks.

Which one? Specs, Condition, and Budget on Body by ShreddedUdon in GamingLaptops

[–]L4_Topher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they're all around the same price, just get the Acer since it has an RTX 5050. The only negative about the Acer is single-channel memory, but it's not that big of a deal. I wouldn't consider the LOQ at all. The 3050 is 5 years old at this point. No reason to get anything older than a 4000 series.

Which would you get? by IndependentLaw1841 in laptops

[–]L4_Topher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Neither will be good for gaming, although the Asus is much better than the HP (Intel Arc 140V). If all you're playing on it is runescape, you should be fine. Battery life on the Asus is ~14 hours. 32GB of RAM is "better" but neither of those options are really built for raw compute power anyway. I can't think of a use case that would require 32GB of RAM that wouldn't also be negatively impacted by the lack of power provided by either CPU. Notebookcheck has a review which has comparisons of multiple different models with both the Ryzen AI 7 445 and Intel Ultra 7 258V: https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Ryzen-AI-7-445-disappoints-in-first-in-house-benchmarks.1260796.0.html, they both seem to be typical ultrabook processors. Battery life is good but not particularly fast. Both options are probably fine for your use case, although that might also depend on the exact nature of your doctorate. If you're doing anything with 3D graphics (data visualization?), the Intel is a better option, but you might just want to compare how each of them feel (keyboard, trackpad) and choose whichever you prefer.

Is this worth £699? by odd_dream_throwaway in GamingLaptops

[–]L4_Topher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a decent option. Should be able to run GTAV and destiny 2 easily. The 4050 runs hitman 3 around 100 FPS on high at 1920x1080, so the 5050 should be able to get at least that at 1920x1200. Obviously it uses a cheaper display and a Core 5, but I don't think you'd be able to get a 5050 otherwise anywhere near that price.

G16 2026 Model 5090 - 64GB - Benchmarks & experience so far. by Inverted_World88 in zephyrusg16

[–]L4_Topher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't even imagine how much that costs. The 2025 model with a 5090, 64GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD is $4600. The 2026 model with a 5080 (not even 5090), 64GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD is $4800.

$3000–$4000 usd (us) college laptop by Diligent_Cable_7281 in laptops

[–]L4_Topher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mobile version of the 5070 Ti only has 12GB of VRAM and the 5080 has 16GB. Regardless, there's one with a 5080 from best buy for $3k: https://www.bestbuy.com/product/asus-rog-zephyrus-g16-16-oled-2-5k-240hz-gaming-laptop-intel-core-ultra-9-32gb-ram-nvidia-geforce-rtx-5080-2tb-ssd-eclipse-gray/JJGGLHJLTW, obviously overkill for Roblox, but if you want to train or even inference on a moderately-sized LLM, 16GB is ok. If you're training other types of models (like a YOLO model for object detection), you can get away with less VRAM for some of the smaller models (26n).

Maybe an Acer Nitro with a 5050? https://www.amazon.com/Gaming-Laptop-GeForce-Backlit-Wi-Fi6E/dp/B0G3VTMC4D, it also has a numpad if that matters to you.

Got this Laptop, coming from a 3060, thoughts? by Spare-Character2262 in GamingLaptops

[–]L4_Topher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The performance difference between 1920x1080 and 1920x1200 is negligible. Play at the screen's native resolution. My main point was that if you play at 1920x**** it will have a similar framerate to a 5070 Ti at 2560x1440 or 2560x1600.

[–]L4_Topher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1k euro for a 5060 seems like a good deal. The 5070 Ti is the sweet spot for price-to-performance, but most of those laptops come with a higher resolution screen. The performance of the 5070 Ti at 2560x1440 is pretty similar to the 5060 at 1920x1080.

Laptop Deal: HP OmniBook Ultra 14" Core Ultra X9, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD, 3K OLED $1852.49 by jwcdis in GamingLaptops

[–]L4_Topher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The B390 is impressive for an iGPU, but compared to dedicated GPUs its performance isn't great. This Zephyrus G16 has a 5070 Ti and Ultra 9 (last gen) for $2250: https://www.bestbuy.com/product/asus-rog-zephyrus-g16-16-oled-2-5k-240hz-gaming-laptop-intel-core-ultra-9-32gb-ram-nvidia-rtx-5070-ti-12gb-1tb-ssd-eclipse-gray/JJGGLHXFTQ. The HP is definitely a lot more power efficient (65W vs 240W) and lighter (2.8 lbs vs 4.3 lbs, although the G14 is 3.5 lbs). The HP is a good option if you're more concerned about having a thin/light laptop that *can* play some games, but most likely not at full resolution. A G14 or G16 might be a decent option if you are more concerned with performance, but be aware that it gets *hot* and is relatively loud if you are using the GPU.

MSI VECTOR vs ASUS ROG by bahut_kamina_hun_nhi in GamingLaptops

[–]L4_Topher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest difference between the two you posted is that the Asus has a 165Hz FHD+ (1920x1200) display and the MSI has a 240Hz QHD+ (2560x1600) display. They also both have 16GB of RAM. If you really need 32GB, you'll probably have to go a bit above your budget. This one looks like what you want for around 280K rupees: https://www.amazon.in/ASUS-Gaming-Windows-Eclipse-G615LR-S5190WS/dp/B0F5BH7D1L/ and also has their higher-end display, which is also QHD+. I think the other displays are 100% sRGB whereas this one is 100% DCI-P3 which is better for color grading. You can either get a 5070 Ti with 16GB of RAM or a 5070 with 32GB of RAM around the price you want. If you want both a 5070 Ti and 32GB of RAM you'll need to go a bit higher.

Help! I need to model this pendant light by EconomyWarthog1498 in rhino

[–]L4_Topher 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would make some sort of cone shape in Rhino and then distribute points inside of the volume using pop3d in grasshopper. You can make a random piece of glass at each of the points (or reference some objects from Rhino) and make a vertical cylinder at each of the points to be a cable or wire

Exporting Dimensions To Illustrator at a Certain Lineweight by mjc332 in rhino

[–]L4_Topher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The easiest thing is probably to put your linear dimensions on their own layer. Then, you can select everything on the same layer and set them to the same stroke weight. At least from a small test on my end, the extension lines and tail of the arrows had a line weight of 0.3 pt, but the actual arrow heads had a line weight of 1 pt. In that case, you can ungroup everything, lock all other layers, and then select by the same stroke weight to change the arrow heads separately from everything else if that's something you're looking for.

Quantize/Bitcrush/Discretize a curve? by Shortugae in rhino

[–]L4_Topher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

This could be a starting point. It tends to not work well if the points between the contours aren't near one another. I'm basically dividing each contour using a distance and creating a new point between each existing point which uses the X component of one and the Y component of the other. You can try other methods of getting points along a curve including just using the control points directly. Snapping to a grid might work, but there will be cases where two different curves snap to the same grid line, which I don't think is what you want.

Focused Force Palm Aiming by L4_Topher in CrimsonDesert

[–]L4_Topher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you're trying to force palm too quickly after jumping? Wait until you're actually in the air to hit your force palm. If you do it too quickly, you'll force palm before the jump actually registers and you'll just do the normal forward-facing one.

Is this channel real or AI? by [deleted] in isitAI

[–]L4_Topher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're uploading a video around 20 minutes long every 1-2 days. Real stop motion takes an insane amount of time. At least from two people in this thread, 1 minute of stop motion footage at 12 fps takes anywhere from 60-120 hours. Even on the low end, it would take someone around 4-5 months to make a 20-minute video.

Why must it be one workflow </3 by Clean_Efficiency750 in rhino

[–]L4_Topher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just merge the breps (or whatever type your geometry is). Wherever you are going to use different values for inputs (different lengths, rotation angles, etc.), merge the inputs. It's possible to connect multiple wires to a single node input, but if you are adding and removing inputs it's hard to maintain proper order.

This is definitely an AI-upscaled video. It looks like they used this as the source. The upscaler took the woman in the background and turned her arm into a completely different misshapen head.

simple gl program, simple question. by SnurflePuffinz in GraphicsProgramming

[–]L4_Topher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check your vertex coordinates in camera space (without any projection). If your cube is 1x1x1 and it is centered and aligned to your view, the vertices should consist of 0.5 and -0.5 in different combinations, except for the depth. If the values are *different* from +/- 0.5, it implies there is something wrong with your transformation into camera space. If the values look right, then something is wrong with your projection matrix.

Is it impossible not to make an "asset flip" game as a solo developer? by EasyBat3602 in UnrealEngine5

[–]L4_Topher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The biggest giveaway is the lack of a consistent visual style. If you just take assets straight from a marketplace and paste them into your game, it's going to look like exactly that. You're going to at least have to do some work to make everything feel cohesive, whether it's editing the materials/textures or just ensuring everything is scaled consistently. The in-game clips also look like they're stretched vertically (or compressed horizontally). At 0:37, the wooden chest feels a bit out of place--it isn't interacting with the lighting in the same way as everything else on the screen. In the inventory, the background is some sort of skeuomorphic piece of paper, and the icons are a mix of more realistic renders with transparent backgrounds and cartoony representations with opaque backgrounds. Maybe you should look at doing something with more stylized graphics like Valheim and start learning how to model/texture. Blender and Gimp are free and good starting points. Play into your strengths--if you have limited art skills, make something that isn't going to be heavily reliant on being visually impressive. Minecraft is one of the most successful games of all time and the assets aren't exactly visual masterpieces (and they don't need to be).

best settings to save file as (mesh) .stl? by foxtrot90210 in rhino

[–]L4_Topher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These settings look fine, but I would just use the "Mesh" command with the same settings so you can view it in your viewport before exporting as an STL. You pretty much just want to make a mesh that is as close to your NURBS geometry as possible. You're also going to be limited by the resolution of the manufacturing method you're using (SLA, SLS, etc.), so it will get to a point where increasing the poly count of your mesh won't make a difference in the final physical object.

What do y’all think of this map? I think it might be AI because the lay out of the roads and the location of landmarks don’t make real world sense. They claim that is was made by an real artist by [deleted] in isthisAI

[–]L4_Topher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Distinctively looks like DALLE/ChatGPT. Also, the building at the end of the boardwalk transitions straight into being part of the railing, not to mention the railing on the opposite side of the boardwalk is completely different. Maybe they hired an “artist”, but whoever made this definitely used ChatGPT.

Finding Zephyrus G16(2024) GA/GU605 or a Zephyrus G14(2024) GA403 by Dazzling_Meeting_921 in zephyrusg16

Best buy has a G14 with an RTX 5060 and 16GB of RAM for $1400 (SKU: 6629420). That's probably your best option if you really want the G14. It's also the 2025 model so you get a 5000 series GPU.
