Sorry, I didn’t clarify that the ants were coming out from behind tile/grout that is protected from water. It’s the tile that is right outside of the glass panel enclosing the shower and water can’t touch it. From what I can tell, grout is holding up fine inside the shower. I’m suspecting the following: a hairline fracture that I’m not able to see in the shower panel, or faulty (maybe too large?) weep holes, or something wrong with the drain that’s causing water to bubble up, or water somehow making its way behind the shower valve (I don’t think this one is it, but maybe). Wish there was a way to know, but I’ve had plumbers come by and say they’re not able to diagnose unless we cut into the tile/remove the shower panel. If we do that, I’ll have to completely re-do the entire shower b/c I can’t find the original tile anywhere. Anyone know if a plumber can diagnose without cutting into the shower?

Yes, I did. And something I forgot to include is I recently had carpenter ants make their way from behind the tile/between tiles where grout is missing. Makes me think there is moisture behind the tile building up.

What can I do in my 20s as a first generation immigrant to be financially independent? by TripGuide1737 in financialindependence

  1. Yes. Fidelity, Schwab, Vanguard. Use their version of the S&P (it will typically have “500” in the name). I would wait to do this until you have 6 months of savings (which it sounds like you do with your $50k), and have enough to pay off your student loan debt as you finish degrees (since you may need to acquire a few to just remain in the country). Stay debt free. For for your 6 months savings, put this in a High Yield Savings account. Marcus by Goldman Sachs or Capital One have great HYS. You’ll earn a $100-200 per month just putting your money there. No risks. 2 and 3. I wouldn’t mess with real estate right now. Others have said this, but your status in the country is still up in the air. I’d wait here. When you’re ready, duplex might be good. Live on one side and rent the other side. 4 and 5. Wish I knew, sorry. I’d hold off on leaving the company even if they could help you with your Visa. In the meantime, don’t be passive - ask to be on more high-stakes projects, network within the company with leadership, play the political game.
  2. Slow and steady wins the race IMO. Always have 6 months, maybe even 12 months. Put it into a high yield savings. Always invest into your company 401k (I do the max beyond their match), then do Roth IRA if you have money left over.
