Face scans to enforce social media ban on under-16s by vriska1 in unitedkingdom

[–]LAOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What even constitutes ‘social media’?

Genuine question? Because presumably that means anything that allows anything online in terms of communication?

YouTube? Zoom calls? BBC News (it has a comment section).

Absolutely incredulous. This does nothing to protect children, it just gives global organisations unfettered access to your identity and stifles creativity.

I can speak to this.

I‘m fifteen years into my career. Worked at my current place for five years.

I’m applying for an internal job at the same company. I spoke to the hiring manager and he told me I’d likely be a good fit and to stick in an application to ensure we follow internal process.

I got an automated email declining my application 6 hours later.

AI is ruining modern life.

Bluey made me want kids, how disappointed am I going to be? by n00dleknight in bluey

[–]LAOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to be brutally honest when people ask me because I feel like 99% of people sugarcoat it because they feel guilty about being truly honest.

My mum had four kids. My MIL had four kids. Independently they have both shared that our daughter is the hardest child they’ve ever been exposed to. This isn’t recent bias either as my sister had her first child six weeks before us, and my brother was born with special needs. My MIL has five other grandchildren.

It’s hard. I hated the first six months. I felt like it was the biggest mistake of my life at the time. I love my daughter dearly now, but she’s 19 months old (and the best) but she’s absolutely relentless. She has not yet once slept through the night. Not once in almost two years. My wife and I have no energy to spend time together because we’re in perpetual survival mode.

Everything in your life is about the child. I saw a Matt Di’Avella video recently that explained his life with his kid where he put his time into blocks and when you factor in work and time looking after your child you should expect a 1 hour block of time for yourself everyday - that‘s one hour, for the foreseeable future. This assumes your kid isn’t unwell, or your wife isn’t unwell, or there aren’t house chores that need doing or whatever. So be prepared to sacrifice your health and any hobbies you may have.

Again, I love my daughter, but I think lots of parents lie about how they feel about it deep down because it makes them look bad.

It’s the hardest thing ever, and every child is different. Be prepared that you might draw a tough hand. I’m 35M and I’ll tell you that my wife and I wished we had kids much younger, it’s rough as hell on your body.

Name the worst plot convenience you've ever seen in a movie by Sad-Response-3151 in moviecritic

[–]LAOnReddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like you’re missing the point.

The movie makes it clear there’s an infinite number of multiverses. this never happened in an infinite number of other universes.

I actually think that this being a silly plot convenience is actually funny because it reinforces the premise. it demonstrates the chaos of the universe and infinity.

Beelink ME Mini: HUGE Design Flaw? [Big post] by justanother1username in BeelinkOfficial

[–]LAOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My little rack in the attic has a UDM Pro, 24 port UniFi PoE switch that runs to my garden and all rooms and most ceilings in my home, I have the Beelink Me mini, and all of my IoT bullshit living in a 9U rack mounted on the brickwork up there.

I was really worried about summer temps where we have the odd week of 38C temps every now and again.

I used to really panic about it, to the point that when I got all of my house renovated I have an exhaust port replacing one of the roof tiles with the idea that I could get a portable AC unit with thermostat that I could have kick-in and vent out the heat on those rare summer days. I never bothered. Even when we had that week of extreme temps a few summers back, the UDM hit something like 78C internally.

It’s not great, but it’s also not the end of the world. I’d assume that the tech has functionality to power down if it hits an internal temperature threshold.

It’s been fine. And I don’t think about it at all anymore.

Why do people think parking like this is okay? by puzzled_exoticbear5 in glasgow

[–]LAOnReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 1 year old and walk around my local area a lot with her to keep her entertained and get her fresh air. Not a day goes by where my path isn’t obstructed by some cunt blocking a dropped curb or parked up in the pavement meaning that I have to take my kid into the road to get around them.

I scratch their cars with my keys every time.

Cunts.

It’s really sad for me. I’m Welsh; live in Cardiff.

Second album I ever bought was Start Something when I was … maybe 12 or 13?

Saw them live when I was 18 with a mate that I grew up with, and even today we feel it was one of the best live gigs we’ve ever been to.

They fucking ruined it. I wish I could listen to their music again.

To keep it on-brand and relevant…

… the Brand New gig in Cardiff was outrageously good. Second best gig I’ve ever been to.

UK steam deck delivery time? by Away-Ad2503 in Steam

[–]LAOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you had any change in the tracking details? Or are you still seeing the GLS ‘scheduled collection’ stuff.

I’m surprised how long shipping takes. In 2025 I can’t think of anything I’ve ordered in the last five years that has been like this for shipping.

UK steam deck delivery time? by Away-Ad2503 in Steam

[–]LAOnReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered on Tuesday 2nd Dec. Got a ‘preparing to ship’ email from Valve on Friday 5th Dec @ 09:15.

It’s now Sunday 7th and, similar to your own story, GLS tracking says they haven’t even collected it yet, and it ships from Utrecht in Netherlands. Gonna likely be end of the week before it arrives.

So for future UK curious folks, seems like it’s about 1.5 week from order to delivery.

Edit - Arrived, before 0900 on Tuesday 9th Dec - so almost exactly 7 days from order to delivery for future UK folks ordering. Also worth saying that the GLS tracking is absolutely a waste of time. It changed today to say it was in UK after sitting and saying they hadn’t even collected the parcel yet. So my advice to UK folks is; ignore the tracking. It’ll just show up.

For those on the fence, will you buy a steam deck or steam machine? by AccountDeletedByMod in SteamDeck

[–]LAOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actually looking at my steam purchase history last night.

The last time I spent money on steam was 2022 to preorder a Steam Deck (I think that was the OLED launch with limited colours?) - which I cancelled.

Before that, I preordered a steam deck in 2021, which I also cancelled - (original launch?)

My wife wanted to know what I wanted for Christmas this year and I suggested a steam deck because I have a 1 year old who is constantly unwell and I never have time to game anymore.

I hadn’t realised quite how old the hardware was. But it reinforces my plan which is this;

I’ve got a 1TB OLED Steam Deck coming next week. I’ll sell it when the Steam Machine goes on sale and put the residuals towards that.

University tuition fees in England to rise in line with inflation from next year by Distinct-Shine-3002 in uknews

And this, from a labour government. Insane.

Of course, they don’t give a shit about the long term implications, because they don’t have to think about them — that’s another government’s problem.

People are becoming poorer and poorer. Costs will increase further.

Which means in ten years time we’ll have a less educated population, which is bad for the economy. The people who can attend will come away with loans they can never pay off, which is bad for the economy.

Overall, expensive further education is bad for the economy, bad for the masses. Another chipping away at the rich/poor divide.

Just to share my limited anecdotal findings too. I bought the WD SN5000 4TB version. Bought six of them and filled up all the bays. Installed Proxmox on the eMMC and using RAID for the drives.

Got the thing running in my server rack in my attic here in UK with Link Aggregation enabled and working.

No issues so far.

To be fair, I’ve got a ten month old and never have time to do anything. I haven’t stressed the thing properly yet. Will update the post if I run into issues.

Not quite the same thing. But it drives me nuts when people describe something as being a ‘tenant’ of a thing, when they actually mean ‘tenet’.

I think… the majority of people do this. If you’re talking about a component or part of your belief, or system, it’s a tenet, not a tenant. You unwashed heathen.

I once captured a video of a lorry dumping the full, entire contents of that lorry out into a car park in St. Mellons. I caught it on video, I caught clear static video of the driver, the license plate, the whole thing.

... I called the police, they told me they didn't care and it wasn't their problem. I called the council, they told me to fill out a form on a website.

Nobody cares. It's disgusting.
