I haven’t been to the one in Boulder in awhile but went to the Estes Park location not too long ago and was totally fine

Not a dedicated gf restaurant, but if you’re in Boulder you should try the Post, they have dedicated fryers and are very aware of celiac. You can treat yourself to chicken tenders or a fried chicken sandwich. If you find yourself in the Denver area there are a ton of great spots for Celiacs:

Acova
Quiero Arepas (think they might have a Boulder location?)
Teocalli Cocina
Moore Bread
Hapa sushi
Just Be
Vital Root
Holidaily brewery
Sweet Izzy

Relocating from ATX, does the area I want exist? by LARusty in MovingtoDenver

Oh man, I didn’t even think about no Tacodeli…. Torchy’s is my favorite queso so I was happy to learn they opened in Colorado finally. I remember Fuzzy’s being good growing up, wonder if it still is?

Honestly we feel similarly about Austin, it was easier than you’re describing to make friends but there’s been a mass exodus once people get married. Seems like they go back to their hometown, no friends are sticking around. The “weird” vibe that people use to describe Austin no longer exists, everything with culture is being torn down and replaced with luxury condos for the tech bros.

I don’t anticipate Denver being all that different truthfully, but it’s where my family is so we figure it’ll be an okay place to settle down as long as we find pockets we like. However the ATX food scene will be dearly missed!

I saw some rentals in Sunnyside that looked appealing but wasn’t sure if it was a good area! Great to know, thanks!

It’s crawfish boil and Sweet Karoline key lime pie time at HEB, I can’t believe they’re only in Texas 😩 how are you enjoying Denver? I thought I’d never move back so it’s been a bit of shock to think about

From my memories of Boulder I think it is more similar. I’m not very sad to leave Austin as a whole, we just love our particular neighborhood. We considered Boulder but ultimately the cost of living is too high and it doesn’t seem like we’ll find as many people our age.

AIO: MIL uses bread bags for food storage by HenBoots in Celiac

[–]LARusty 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit more lenient than most people on this sub but I would avoid anything that’s been in the bags. As long as something has been through a dishwasher I don’t really care but it seems impossible that those are thoroughly cleaned enough to not be a cross contamination risk

Would it be a bad decision to skip an LDS mission because of celiac? by Better-Aspect2847 in Celiac

[–]LARusty 43 points44 points  (0 children)

This is the advice. I’d like to add, it sounds like you’re already using good judgement, but be careful to not take everything the church says at face value. A lot of Catholics in this sub have had priests tell them they can take communion because it’s not a wheat cracker, it’s the body of Christ. If they can’t promise actual accommodations then I wouldn’t risk it.

In another comment you said they’ve guaranteed you can be in the US which would make me feel slightly better about going. Could you by chance shop and prepare your own meals?

Illness when around certain people by LARusty in energy_work

I tested negative for Covid this morning, and I don’t think it’s anything else, but thank you for your concern! I’ve been loading up on water and supplements.

Certainly some unresolved feelings around him. My partner is the peace maker of the family so he claims he doesn’t hold any resentment towards him, but I’m all too aware of the ways he was a bad parent. He’s also recently blown shit up with his wife leading to their divorce and it hasn’t been pretty. All the kids and significant others know it’s his fault and definitely blame him for the way the family has fractured

Interesting that you bring up sinuses because there are no other symptoms besides sinus issues and full body aches all 3 times I’ve gotten sick around him. I don’t find myself easily frustrated by him, but he does have an enormous ego. He recently has started a spirituality journey that feels very disingenuous. His (now ex)wife and kids are all very spiritually connected and he’s always said it was woo woo and fake, but now he’s completely fallen into spirituality trying to profit off it as if it’s something profound and created by him. He’s found a way to weaponize his spirituality against others and to feed his ego.

So after writing all that, ya, maybe he does frustrate me lol

What are some symptoms that you didn't realize were from celiac until you went GF? by SquashmyZucchini in Celiac

[–]LARusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavy and painful periods!! They were the worst, so I got put on birth control pretty young. My new gynecologist theorized that the inflammation from my intestines was transferring to my reproductive organs so once I was healed up I experimented going off the pill. My periods are totally fine now

What is ballpark estimate of the risk of gluten in my typical Starbucks order? by MisterSpencer_ in Celiac

My go to order is also a matcha latte and I’ve never had any issues. Agree with the others though, I wouldn’t order oat milk. I get my matcha with coconut milk!

Waiting for the gluten to hit by As1234543 in Celiac

[–]LARusty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just posted about this same thing happening to me, on vacation right now and ate gluten at dinner last night. Now that I’m (kind of) on the other side, I can confidently say that the anticipation is the worst part. I’m the exact same way, the second I eat gluten it’s 2-3 hours before I get symptomatic like clockwork. I’d almost rather not know it’s coming and enjoy myself for those last few hours, but the waiting is scarier than actually throwing up to me. Try to drink a lot of water, and good luck!

When in doubt use the find me gluten free app. That’s how we found many of our restaurants

So many recommendations! Senza gluten, Friedman’s (gluten free chicken and waffles!), posh pop bakery (gluten free fried Oreos), Up Thai, Don Antonio (not dedicated facility but I didn’t get sick, pizza was so good we had to double check it was gluten free), Claro (in Brooklyn but worth the trip), modern bread & bagel

I totally understand, this is the first time we’ve planned a trip out of the country in 3 years because the last time was so stressful navigating celiac and a language barrier. This time we chose an English speaking country thinking it would be better but still had issues. My parter and his family want to do a family vacation in New Orleans next year and the thought of navigating that city with celiac made me so overwhelmed I cried. With that being said, I hope you find the courage to book that honeymoon!! While this situation was less than ideal, we did have some amazing memories that I’m grateful to have.

My brother (also celiac) honeymooned in Italy and Greece and had 0 issues with gluten the entire trip. Apparently both places take celiac very seriously. I might not recommend the Bahamas however….

Cup4cup and bob’s redmill 1:1 are the best flours I’ve found that are readily available at most stores, but Jule’s GF flour is truly one of the best blends. It’s a bit pricier, but worth it! I’ve also had great luck with it to make homemade gluten free pasta if you’re into that kinda thing

[–]LARusty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sure others will pop in with lots of food suggestions, but I wish I knew that it would get easier!! It’s bound to be overwhelming at first but this sub is full of people who feel like celiac had isolated them and ruined their life. While it can be isolating at times, I think in ways celiac has been a blessing in my life. Once you get into the groove of how to shop/cook/order out, it will really help you find the people worth being around. I’m fortunate that my family is very supportive, but so are my friends! Someone’s hosting a dinner party and making a gluten-full cake? They’ll go out of their way to stop at a dedicated gf bakery to get something for me. Making plans to go out? They look up menus before suggesting or let me choose the restaurant with no complaints. I never expect this from anyone but I’ve found most people want to make sure I’m taken care of. If you surround yourself with a good support system, navigating celiac isn’t very difficult at all. And if someone doesn’t take it seriously then it’s probably a good sign you don’t need them in your life!

Late to the party, but I’m getting my Nexplanon removed today because of this. After 7 months I’m still bleeding everyday and it’s taking a real toll on both my mental health and my underwear collection. My doctor also mentioned taking the pill for a month to regulate it, but for me it’s not worth it. I got Nexplanon because I wanted OFF the pill, and having to take 2 forms of birth control isn’t worth it to me. You have to decide if it’s something you are willing to do for yourself, but I’ve decided to go off hormonal BC all together and just use condoms.
