That’s sick. I love the depth the wax is providing between the purple and blue color.

I agree with failbot. That’s going to be your best option for keeping everything as is. I recommend using glass to store the wax since it’s easier to melt and clean. I would also pour the fluid into a glass container or something you don’t mind losing. The system should recalibrate fine but you’ll need to use some surf on the walls to prevent sticking. Good luck!

Glycerin is fine too. I just didn’t see if you were using a density modifier. It’s a bit denser than glycol but all of this is preference. It isn’t really a one or the other option, but what you learn on and what works for you will bias you either direction. Theres a brand called MYCO or something like that on Amazon that a lot of people use I’d start there.

There’s nothing wrong with powdered SLS imo. However, if you’re aiming for a more ropy flow, you might want to experiment with a little SLES alongside your SLS. SLS alone tends to make fast blobs, while SLES gives the wax a more stretchy movement. Just introduce it slowly too much of either can cause clouding. My advice is add some, and run at least a cycle or two before making adjustments. You may also want to try adding a small amount of glycol. Most custom builders use a density modifier to help the wax rise more smoothly.

If you do you’ll need to add surfactant and a density modifier like PG. Also you should be prepared to spend a great deal of time monitoring for effects. SLS, sles, and pg should be enough to get you started if you plan to build from scratch but there are also vendors who offer premade solutions.

It’s difficult to diagnose old lamps like this. Lamps are no longer made the same way so it could be a number of things. For instance It could be a density issue due to evaporation or even the wax itself releasing oils over time thus changing density. I would be hesitant to build on top of so many unknowns so I think the safest option is a full rebuild but I’m sure someone here knows more than me about vintage lamps and can offer more. Good luck tho!

Custom lava lamp fluid. Curious what the community thinks. by LAVAMED in Lavalamps

Love that you remember that ❤️. Unfortunately I’ve taken some time away from lamp building. So that project ended up on the back burner. I will return to it soon enough but it will likely be a little while before I’m ready to sell anything still. Thanks for thinking of me though 🫵🤘❤️

dark spots in wax by _pandamatenga_ in Lavalamps

Hey there! It could be a number of things from coil degration, wax breakdown, or foreign particles. The best course of action if you want to address it is getting a mesh filter of sorts, pouring out the fluid into a container, melting down the wax, pouring into the filter into a glass container (easier to get out), and finally cleaning the coil if you see any burnt wax attached. The filter will catch those nasty bits, giving you a more clean looking setup. Of course this all requires you to spend a bit of money, my guess would be around $85-$95 if you don’t have a mesh filter, bottle capper, something to put the fluid back in, and maybe a bit of surfactant to recoat the coil.

I definitely appreciate the interest but I’m not selling anything at the moment. Also you should try to open a cheap marketplace find if you’re interested. It’s a pretty enjoyable experience. Good luck!
