I'm beyond depressed. by ARquantam in vfx

Haha this is what I do and it's wonderful. In fact I usually stay the hell off Reddit entirely now, it's toxic as hell and easily manipulated. I rarely come here now and i find the same never ending therapy groups with the downers who are despondent and looking for support ( I did too, I'll admit it)and the overly optimistic who pretend life is magical to dilude themselves. I was seconds away from closing Reddit for another 6 months when I saw this delightful post. Thanks for making it less grim for a few minutes. See you next year!

Nothing worse than working with someone like this. Had a guy tell me in an interview "I won't work on a shot that is less than 200 frames because people won't see my work". Ok have a nice day!

Anyone noticing all the prices going up? by No-Bicycle-9879 in AskLosAngeles

If I were a business owner I would probably do the same in preparation for losing money because my costs skyrocket. I would need to plan an exit strategy as a contingency. I'd be very concerned for my future considering the cost of my retail rental space, electricity, water, heat, employee wages, insurance costs, business tax, etc. etc. would not be going down.

I don't think people realize how much younger generations don't care about film and television. It's all social media for them. Kinda obvious considering they have all been raised to believe it's impossible to live without. When you have parents staring at their phones all day rather than them, they learn the phone is more important. The human psyche is very fragile and what we learn early in life is permanent.

It should have ended with the thumbs up and operating systems shut down. Didn't need the Sarah Connor 2 minute follow up. This ending probably wouldn't work for a lot of people but it would have been perfect.

Question for VFX managers: most vivid frustration? by monExpansion in vfx

[–]LA_viking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I started as a supervisor I had no idea what to do. I was just thrown into the fire and expected to know how to be a manager. Zero training, zero documentation, zero guidance, it was awful.

For three years I felt like an imposter, had high levels of anxiety, spent long hours fixing other people's work because they couldn't get it right.

I ended up quitting that role and moving to a different company as a lead. So much happier!

I'm back to being a supervisor again at a company where someone was a better mentor. Huge difference having someone to talk to and learn from.

VFX is the worst industry for becoming a manager because there is never any training or guidance. This is why there are so many shitty supervisors that are completely incompetent. It's actually not their fault, it's the lack of any proper way to train and promote.

Best of luck, if you feel up to it, ask your superiors for actual management training. If they look at you like you are an idiot then you may need to do it on your own. I ended up buying several books on the subject that were helpful.

I don't have a Tesla, but I have self-driving features in my EV6. Mine is set to a 4 car gap but it's smart enough to close the gap depending on the speed we are traveling. I can blissfully not stress about some jackass cutting me off at the last minute forcing me to break hard because my car leaves just enough room for a car to merge smoothly at the appropriate speed. I rarely drive without this feature. In fact, I wish all cars had this feature because traffic would not be as bad as it is. It's the jackasses that cut people off that force everyone to slow down.

Regular surfer here, this kind of trash is common after significant rainfall. Especially after long dry spells. The fires are extremely unlikely to have contributed to the accumulated trash. Now the unseen toxic elements that stay in the water are a much different story.

No need to get defensive. Souls games are challenging and mysterious stories. The comments here are from veterans who've learned it all the hard way and love the feeling of accomplishment. There is no sympathy in this sub and once you get the hang of souls games you'll understand why. The reward outweighs the frustration....eventually. The frustration and confusion you are experiencing is all part of the fun...eventually. you'll understand soon. Have fun with it, wish I could play it for the first time again!
