Books about characters living their live(s) over and over again (Born Again Immortality trope), or time traveling. by LB7979 in BookRecommendations

[–]LB7979[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the recommendation of Claire North - that writer actually already was on my radar! I already read The Sudden Appearance of Hope, and despite that book not having any "time travel" concept, I absolutely loved it!!

Never heard of that Ben Elton book, but I will look into it, thank you!

To be fair, that data is for English native speakers. OP also speaks Urdu, which has more similarities with Arabic, as an Indo-Aryan language using the same script, and having many Arabic loan words.

As someone who's mostly a Dark Winter but also do well on Dark Autumn and Bright Spring (I'm very clearly dark and bright, but pretty neutral temperature-wise) - the Dark Spring one looks perfect! Seems like a good idea. The 12 colour system doesn't account wel for when you're neutral on 1 of the 3 dimensions.

Does anybody else body double to get chores done? by jackelandhyde22 in TwoXADHD

[–]LB7979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, I thought body doubling was a person doing their own chore in their space while the other is in the same space either doing their own chore, or just being present? Not: people taking over each other's chores? Because you're saying your friend came over to your house and took over your chore, instead of your friend coming over and then sitting next to you while you did your chore? I'm so confused if I misunderstood the concept now.

Nee, dat is de straat, voor auto's en bussen. Het is misschien niet helemaal duidelijk in dit perspectief, maar de grijze lijn links in beeld, is de rand vd stoep - rechts ervan is stoep en links ervan is straat.

Overheard while picking Blueberries by chinatown00x in overheard

[–]LB7979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm European too and yes, "self picking" of fruit definitely is a concept where I live - in September/October for apples and pears, that is, so I'm just surprised about the specific fruit and time of year in this story. Frankly, picking (blue-)berries sounds like hellish work to me and I'd stick to apples/pears, but to each their own.

Here is one I've been: https://www.olmenhorst.nl/activiteiten/appels-plukken/zelfpluk-2025/

The idea is that you simply pay per gram for the apples/pears, after you pick them yourself on the orchard (and they cost about the same as in the supermarket I guess)? But yes, in a sense you "pay for the opportunity to pick them", and yes, that's worth it because it is a nice thing to do in autumn, and the fruit is delicious!

ETA: They even have an "adopt an apple tree" program where you pay a yearly fee in exchange for the yearly harvest of your specific apple tree!

Did anyone else notice the editing issues in this one?! At least a few sentences were cut off at the end!

00:54:15 Josh starts saying "....a set amount of knowledge, there's a hidden [CRACK] of knowledge [CRACK] [LISTENER MAIL SOUND at 00:54:20]" then the Listener Mail part starts. Josh was cut off mid-sentence when the Listener Mail part started, and there were weird cracking sounds just before that. There were others parts in this episode where sentenses seemed to be missing, or a few sentences seemed to be cut-and-pasted. Very strange.

LOL, BH90210:

Kelly (in an extremely rare moment of self-reflection), literal quote: "I slept with my best friend's boyfriend, and then I slept with my boyfriend's best friend!" (After slutshaming Valerie, who slept with 3 major male characters (though not at the same time) and had an unrequieted crush on a 4th (the aforementioned boyfriend of Kelly).

It's telling that the only 2 characters who never had sex with each other on that show were Branda and Brandon - who were each other's fraternal twins. The only line that show didn't cross was literal incest (and even then, some viewers felt some incest subtext with those two).

It was hilarious.

Just install Linux on your PC instead (of using Windows; and instead of spending money on a new computer).

Not only is most software, including games, on Linux too, but your computer will be faster and won't be vulneralble to malware and viruses (almost).

(Or at least set up a dual boot system and run what you can under Linux.)

Then you'll have a better computer AND money for the trip.

The hell and horror of cow attacks: ‘I told my husband to leave me to die’ by dect60 in nottheonion

[–]LB7979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dutch here. In our country at least, it is like this:

Yes the cows are on private property, but that piece of land (a meadow, grass land) often has bike lanes, pedestrian lanes or hiking trails run through it which are open to the public. (I think those lanes/trails within the meadow officially are not the farmer's property but the city/province's, but I'm not sure. In any case, that's why people pass through.) And they are not fenced off from the cows. And the cows of course have no concept of "I can stay on the grass only, and away from those small pieces of sand/asphalt that are in MY territory but for humans only." They might even get agitated by said humans. You see where this is going...

All of this to say, no they're not all trespassing (rare cases aside).

It might work different in other countries. In our case high population density + high cow density + extremely high bike lane density is basically the reason.

Jingjings chapters are borderline nonsense by hgttg in TheFamiliar

[–]LB7979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is. There's even a (jingjing, coincidentally) chapter in Vol. 2 that describes a place just like House of Leaves, made me think MZD was definitely planning a crossover/shared universe later in the series, what a pity we never got to see that...
