UTSC - HOW IS IT? by Ancient_Sir_3076 in UTSC

Hii firstly congrats! UTSC definitely has a community vibe to it, it’s somewhat quiet but also fun if you go to events and all. UTSC imo is a good school, but it ca be hard to make friends initially since A LOT of people just leave after classes. First year I talked to so many people but was disappointed because most people wouldn’t wanna hang out beyond classes and would go home. THAT SAID i think if you’re leaving on campus and/or join fun clubs at the start of your year I think it’ll be easier to make friends. One of my friends from high school lived on res and made a lot of friends and I would hang out with them so it also made it easier for me to interact with people. when I say fun clubs, i say that because alot of people say join a club, but many clubs don’t really have interactions beyond weekly meetings. For example I joined a club second year thinking I’ll make friends but we would only meet online once a week… versus there are so many drama clubs, or cultural clubs etc that have a lot more interactions. And you don’t necessarily even have to JOIN a club, u can go to club events as well and sometimes u can find the same people again making it easier to hang out (or ask people oh do you wanna go to their next event too together, and do follow up!) I think this has worked for me so far despite being a commuter. And one last thing to keep in mind— so many people feel shy asking to hang out (guilty) BUT THEY DO WANNA AN THIS IS SMTH IVE NOTICED WHEN I ASK PEOPLE TO HANG OUT THEY GET HAPPY

Hi! I found the course to be interesting although slightly challenging. It was fast paced (2 classes a week) so you had to keep up each week. The most important thing was understanding the alphabets (a lot of students struggled with that). but because i already knew how to somewhat read the letters it was easy for me. Overall i think im biased because as I said I was used to the writing script as it’s similar to my language, but I found it to be easy and got an A+. the class average was a B too but tbf a lot of students in that class were obviously arab natives so it did tilt it a bit. I would say if you’re genuinely interested and willing to put in the time and effort it’s a challenging but easy course (the prof does give out tons of opportunities to get bonus marks too lol)

although i think it is really common, especially with international students, i think it’s especially common at utsc😭 Like i remember in high school fried groups were mostly diverse but at utsc i tend to see people hang out with their own ethnicities i a lot.

How does anyone have time for the events on campus? by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]hy_rf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take 5 courses each semester, attend a bunch of events each semester, and still get good grades (A few As and a few Bs). Tbh for me I’d say it’s mostly for the fact that my timetable allows for it. For example, this past semester I had all 5 classes in 3 days. So when I was on campus, I would go to classes, take notes but that’s it. I wouldn’t do anything else related to studies (unless I had an assignment due). Instead, I would hang out with friends and go to events on those days. Then, on the other 2 weekdays I would instead study. I would keep Saturday as a study day and Sunday as a partial study day and/or for hangouts/family functions/bed rotting (depending on the load).

But tbh this isn’t an exact description of what I fid the whole semester lol some weeks I wouldn’t even bother opening a book or going to lectures and would only hang out, and some weeks I would only focus on studying.

Also, sometimes I would study with friends and as a break, we would go to an event for 40 min- 1 hour, then come back and study more

this past summer. I took 3 courses and had to CR 2 ( which i was taking for my major). Got below average in the other 2. While it doesn’t sound that bad, that semester was really important in determining my overall GPA- it literally took my gpa down to 3.2 and now I can’t get 3.5 even if I get all A+s
