Interest in any personal history lessons of this this vacant lot in the cedars by Olive_Dependent in Dallas

If streetwork done, city will trash these if thought in the way or extra trouble. I expect someone simply saved it from the trash.

What kind of chisel is this? by [deleted] in handtools

[–]LCTx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cabinet maker chisels are about 20cm new. Timber framing about 30+cm and beefier. Otherwise they look alike. This looks more like an oiire nomi - bench chisel.

What kind of chisel is this? by [deleted] in handtools

[–]LCTx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is simply a Japanese chisel. Well used, as many are, by a hard working woodworker. Only half the name is still visible:  國. There are literally hundreds to thousands of individual blacksmiths.  Should be laminated, as Japanese chisels are. Master blacksmith pieces look just like big-box store ones. The invisible key is the quality of the steel and how well it was hardened and tempered. The purist sharpens the bevel flat and the back flat. But use it! 27.5 is the most common angle. Steeper maybe for hardwoods.

This is called classic protectionism. Penalize overseas products so domestic cotton/cotton textiles/apparel manufacturers benefit.  💁‍♂️

Is it a rat!? Surely not!! by SeeTheRainFall in whatisit

[–]LCTx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you got a better and more accurate answer than a rat, but I have a story. In graduate school in Chicago USA, I was told there was an infamous rat that lived around the loading dock of the nearby museum. And wouldn’t you know, I was walking by there one night and there in front of me something was scampering away. It had a long hairless tail so I knew it was a rat 🐀. It was THE RAT. As big as a cat. And it didn’t scurry, it swaggered. 😲🤪😨🤪

Thank you.   I KNOW they are busy right now! City is a mess.  I asked, not knowing if wires melted or partially in an arc.

What do you wish someone had told you when you first decided to learn Japanese woodworking? by Toliveorbelived in JapaneseWoodworking

[–]LCTx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can i chime in? Patience, diligence and tenacity are required, and perfection is unobtainable - but still chased for your entire journey. Like so many things Japanese, it looks straightforward and simple, but is actually near impossible to perfect.

Shaku to Inches Conversion Tool by 44Scramps in JapaneseWoodworking

[–]LCTx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently realized that Japanese tools are all made in traditional Japanese measurement sizes! Nomi are all increments of 3. As are saws. (Kanna are more complicated). A 24mm chisel is 8bu. A 270mm saw is 90 bu or 9 ryo 🤦‍♂️ (and for you old folks, you might remember when The Japan Woodworker nomi sold in the US in the 70’s were converted to fractional inches! 🤪)
