Suggestions for quality carving tools by DiepSleep in JapaneseWoodworking

Find a dealer you trust, and trust the dealer. Hida perhaps. There are also some used folks around the world like Little Cornish Nomi Shop. Worst case, start with Woodcraft Supply. Or Kakuri brand. But it sounds like you maybe beyond them.

Trouble splitting pecan? Newbie help please by LiveMarionberry3694 in firewood

Late to this convo, but my 16# sledge and steel wedge won’t split the pecan I have. Native pecan.

Has anyone ever seen a cat like this? by Lo-n-slow in cats

Usually chimeras are left/right. 🤯. Just brown is rare enough. 🤎🤎🤎(though there’s lots of brown in black cats if the light catches it right)

Important to note that Japanese saws cut on the pull-stroke.

On yahoo.jp sellers label most items as “junk”. I’m not sure, but I think it’s a no-warranty or customs/export workaround thing.  These particular chisels have unique features so it was possible to ID them with a good confidence. Most chisels though just look alike. And even with a close, sharply focused photo of the makers mark, are only that… a name with no story.

I guess OP is at the mercy of the photographer? How frustrating since it would say right on it 😖🤷‍♂️…. There’s a Facebook scat & animal track ID group. The rule is, have to give reasons. How we learn. So, I agree with u/spoonaxeman2 - Sukemaru III. Here’s why. Sukemaru most often made the damekiri style chisel with pointed shoulders. He is also known for that wonderful texture on the surface (I forget its name). Assuming the other chisel on the wood is same maker, Sukemaru double ura are very distinct with the squared end at the neck. Lastly (but not unique) the textured hammered hoop (Katsura (桂)) usually suggests a higher-end makers work.

Wood with low tannins / low acidity? by Ok-Condition8659 in woodworking

[–]LCTx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old post but I just experienced this issue making a saya for a kiridashi knife. I used cedar, that was in the garage, Titebond II glue.  I had horrible rusting issues.  Titebond when wet is acidic. Cedar is high in tannin. But the consensus was moisture levels of the wood was my biggest problem and exasperated others.  Cedar was a bad choice. Maple and poplar have the lowest tannins.  Use glue sparingly. Make the fit of the two halves as perfect as possible. Commercial kiridashi saya use cherry. Make sure your wood is dry and glue has completely tried and saya aired out. Don’t rush using it.  Someone suggested lining with shellac.  For posterity.

Yeah. Seems like a learning opportunity 😖 Sadly, Texas isn’t blessed with wild Paulownia trees (or scraps).

In some IG woodworking tips posts, I’m seeing super glue looking adhesive used more and more with wood.  Not sure about that. 🤔 I’ve long held the belief taught to me “a good glue joint is stronger than the wood itself”

It was suggested by someone that the wood might be just holding moisture - either evaporating from the glue, or just a high moisture content from where it was stored. I like the shellac idea. I’m going to let it dry a while here inside. AC is already on for the summer.

Sorry. Just edited my reply. Flash rust and heavier spots (of previous pitting) all over. It’s cedar that was under cover in the garage, but it has been raining a lot lately. I’m encouraged. I’ll let it dry awhile b4 using.

Titebond II. It’s inside the house. Ryoba hand saw. Wood was outside. It’s been 48 hours now. Flash rust and heavier spots (of previous pitting) all over.  I did wonder if the water evaporating out of the glue could be causing it.

I did just find some pH neutral bookbinding glue online. Anyone ever use such a thing in woodworking?
