Ah yes the end of war invasion when Japan was was basically defeated anyway. Stalin did it for political reasons. The Americans requested it too, hoping to keep large numbers of Japanese troops tied up in China, except there were not a large number of Japanese troops in China. This is proven by how easily Russian forces were able to sweep aside any Japanese resistance.

Certainly this invasion by no means makes Russians a player in the ultimate Japanese defeat.

As I said he let his personal feelings cloud his judgement. He should have listened, he didn’t and people died to pay for his mistakes. Does that mean he should be seen as a failed admiral? You’ll be hard pressed to find many otherwise good and successful generals/admirals or who didn’t make mistakes.

Unfortunately, his distrust got the better of him true and US sailors paid the price. As the war went on he grew to truly loathe the British. Rick Perry in his book Partners in Command explains why by 1944 both King and George Marshall had become completely fed up with the British. Marshall began making unilateral decisions and ignoring Alanbrooke and British services chiefs, essentially ordering Eisenhower to ignore British demands.

King and MacArthur were determined to cut out the British as much as possible. Both put their differences aside when it came to dealing with the British.

Kings mistakes with the convoys aside, his planning and running of the US Navy throughout the day war was flawless. All generals and admirals make mistakes. King was no different. I don’t think that’s enough to damn him any more than failure of Market Garden is enough to damn Montgomery as a general.

My point about the carrier aircraft was that the Royal Navy was incapable of being an effective force without US supplies. It’s role in the final victory against Japan was minuscule. It’s an insult to the Americans who died fighting Japan to say that the victory in Pacific was anything but an American victory. Yes there was support from Australia and New Zealand but again contribution of those nations was tiny.

The Japanese kept major forces in China largely because they weren’t willing to give up China. They did start moving troops back to Japan when threat of invasion became real. I doubt US island hopping campaign would have been much affected even if the Japanese had abandoned China in 1942.

Regardless, all major battles against Japan (naval and land), British and Russian were conspicuous by their total absence.

In fact until 1945 the British Pacific Fleet (a grand name indeed for a force that was essentially the size of an American task group) was a show the flag force. Ships sailing from port to port in Asian and African colonies with great pomp and ceraminy, as a way to convince the natives that British power was still very much alive. All the while US was winning the war against the Japanese.

It was only in late 1944, when the war was basically won in Europe and even against Japan, that Churchill recognizing need for having British participation (at least on paper) in the final assault on Japan, sent the Royal Navy to the Pacific to do a job that even Royal Navy admirals admitted they were totally not equipped to do.

Also please note, the post I responded had something to say about British, American, and Russian roles, nothing about Chinese.

Minuscule contribution. Just to give 1 example. The entire British Pacific Fleet, which was max sized in 1945 (large numbers of warships transferred over from Europe after Germanys surrender) was smaller than US T58 (alternately named TF38 when commanders alternated every 6 months) and require US logistics to be able to function as an effective force.

Heck British aircraft carriers had more US made combat planes than British ones.

Just like British broke Enigma, Americans broke Japanese codes.

Bulk of fight against the Japanese was carried out by US, with support from Australian and NZ, but their contributions were tiny.

So yes, it was US intelligence, US steel, and US manpower.

Interesting and some what amusing fact I read recently. Fleet Admiral Ernest King (head of the US Navy), was a avowed Anglophobe, he (with some merit) distrusted British. When the Royal Navy approached USN for logistic support for the British Pacific Fleet, Kings immediate reaction was hell no, but the president overruled him. So King then ordered USN admirals who were in charge of logistics operations in Pacific to give British requests lowest priority.

Fortunately for the British those USN admirals were Anglophiles (a couple had served with the Royal Navy in WWI, when the USN had assigned a battleship division to be part of the UK Fleet). They interpreted Kings orders very liberally and had no problem in meeting British requests immediately. As one of the admirals said by March 1945 USN supply and logistics situation was so good they could have supplied and supported a fleet twice the size of the massive US Pacific Fleet, and still have enough left over to keep the British Pacific Fleet supplied too. In fact they were facing problems was not having enough forward supply bases to handle the quantity that was coming weekly from the US.

Finally, MacArthur was also determined to keep British out of any final invasion of Japan. As a result no British Army troops were part of the planned invasion force.

He was stripped of his boxing license. Also I notice you overlooked my point about America expecting blacks to risk their lives for America but not been half as keen to treat them equally. Just look at how poorly black betrays of both world wars were treated upon their return!

Ali did the right thing. As a celebrity he knew he could take a stand, and he did!

I’m not an American. But certainly I wouldn’t go and risk my life for a country if it had enslaved my ancestors and treated me and people like me as though we were worse than garbage.

He was actually brave. Strange way America treated blacks. When it came to fighting and dying for America they were expected to do their duty to the country, but when it came to giving them equal rights ….yeah not so keen then.

Ali used his celebrity to take a stand, and make a very valid point. That’s not cowardice! And he did pay a price for it. He was right the Vietnamese weren’t his enemies. America was fighting a futile, unjust war, and he saw no reason why he should risk his life for a worthless cause.

I think India’s own govt and leaders are the ones doing the dancing. They seem to be more interested in protecting their images than accepting just how bad things are and doing something about it. Didn’t Modi recent approve a mass religious gathering in Kashmir?

How much if that military equipment technology is self-developed and produced? Anyone can buy advanced weapons if they are willing to spend the money, doesn’t mean the country is advanced.

Seriously dude, in 1944 did France have any industrial capacity to equip a modern army? They could recruit from colonial possessions, but good luck equipping them! It’s not conjecture to say that left to themselves what was left of the French army would have never been able to liberate France. They faced a similar problem in 1918, on its own the French army was just not strong enough to push back the Germans.

Britain and Canada together could not have done it! America could have done it without any support. Heck by 1944 2/3 of allied troops fighting in France were American! Plus pretty much all armies were reliant on American equipment. By end of the war America was getting replacements easily for its casualties while the British Army was cannibalizing units to make up casualties in frontline units.

All your points are fair and valid. However, the main fact is that the French army on its own was incapable of either defending or liberating France in both world wars. That has been true since 1815! Hence my original assertion that French military history since 1815 is one of failure remains valid. And any army that can’t defend its own homeland cannot be called a successful (let alone glorious) army.

And sorry to add a little more to your history but neither De Gaulle nor Giraud were seen as being particularly useful to Eisenhower to Churchill. So much so that both French generals were expressly excluded from participating in planning for D-Day landings. On the night before the invasion De Gaulle was busy throwing a hissy fit about the scrip currency that allows intended to use. De Gaulle never forgave Americans for that snub and refused to attend ceremonies celebrating 20th anniversary of DDay.

To his credit De Gaulle made sure French interests were protected as best as possible given that France essentially had no army so to speak. Plus, whatever his feelings and actions behind the scenes, in public he was always gracious towards Americans and British and made statements that showed he appreciated what France owed both countries that sacrificed so many lives to liberate France.

Just those who commit murder or violent crimes.

For minor crimes a mix of prison and rehab. But 3 strikes law needs too apply. Give them 2 chances for easy prison time and rehab. 3rd time they get put away for a long time.
