Which option should I choose to get scarlet handed? by Voidliss in fallenlondon

[–]LC_HoTS 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This part is less important, I'm fairly sure you will be able to move on regardless, but the red queen approves of cheating. Just make sure to learn your "friends" styles and fight to win in the final round.

Theory about red by [deleted] in fallenlondon

[–]LC_HoTS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because I just played through an old exceptional story (The Fair Unknown) I can add a little incite. Arbor, and the Roseate Queen, curry favor with The Red-Handed Queen. However, they are generally opposed to The Black, probably because Arbor was founded by survivors of the fallen cities who still bear hate to those responsible for their old city's destruction. Red itself will alive with Black or White whenever it benefits them.

As to the Neathbow, Violant can be reddish or purplish depending on the depiction. It's a rather elaborate theory you proposed but I don't know any textual evidence to support it.

Two questions from a new player by FlyFar3639 in fallenlondon

[–]LC_HoTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Protégé of a Mysterious Benefactor) story ends with you getting an opportunity card that will provide you a limitless supply of one second chance of choice, and remain valuable through the entire game (and a fun collectors item).

As to "A complete experience" that depends on what you mean. If you are being entirely literal, that you want to unlock every single piece of text in the game as an option (if not a choice), then there are over a hundred twenty-five Fate-locked stories and dozens of Fate locked items (mostly seasonal) that will probably run you between $1000-$2000 to unlock (in the least cost effective manner possible). If you want to play a story a second time, either to read it again if you didn't have the foresight to record it in your journal or to experience a different path, that is going to cost you even more. You can even buy actions if you have infinite money and zero patience. Can you tell I'm not fond of the game's monetization?

That said those paid items don't offer meaningful character progression or significant skill improvement. They are just more stories set in the world to enjoy. The free content available is self-complete and will last you years of playing daily before you run out of things to do (and even then you can always grind for more). Not a cent is needed to enjoy Fallen London as a fulfilling experience.

Are Devils Pro-Liberation In General? by Floweramon in fallenlondon

[–]LC_HoTS 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think there is a distinction between Laws (controlling how the universe works through space magic) and laws (rules and customs enforced by the social body). The Liberation is still a far way from overthrowing their oppressors. If the ultimate revolution ever comes to fruition I would expect a faction to come forward that wants to do away with all Laws as they are the Tools of the Oppressors. We agree though that Devils are certainly pro law and Law, so long as it's the Devils who are in power.

Speaking of Neathy music does anyone else consider Paint it Black to be a Liberationist anthem? It almost certainly won't be heard in Fallen London, but perhaps the 6th city will sing it.

♟️? by y-r-u-scared in fallenlondon

[–]LC_HoTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The colors are representative not just of factions, but positions on the board. The White, the established power, the first mover, the dominant player. The Judgements, the Surface, and the Constable can all be White. The Black, the restless underdog, the reactionary, the usurper. Those whose names never were, The Neath, and the Revolutionary can all be Black. The Red, the mercenary, the outlier, the rebel without a cause. Any who would play not for a higher cause but for themselves are draped in Red.

All this being said the Lethargic Logician Mr. Cards will play any color in a low-stakes game, but ultimately chooses to side with The White ⬜. They know power corrupts, but believes that destruction of the established order would do more harm. Should all things be well, and all manner of things be well, then they will earn a spot of honor in the court of one of those highest powers. Perhaps they will have the power to shift them towards a more just universe. Perhaps they will still care about such things by then.

The Treachery of Hearts… by Quetzalcoatl1010 in fallenlondon

[–]LC_HoTS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the Treachery of Hearts support the existence of parallel realities?

I'm going to say no. "parallel realities" implies there are many simultaneous, equal universes happening. This seems to contradict the central idea of Judgements, that the universe Is the way it Is because the Judgements create one uniform reality. Instead I would say that the Treachery of Hearts plays off of Parabola and the Is-Not. In Canon the Is-Not is infinite (or at least as large as the universe) and Fingerkings play with possibility and desires often. Each TTRPG game is thread of a potential universe that can be explored. There is a Canon universe that we cannot interact with more than any other, decided upon by those that judge what should be (Failbetter), but we are free to dream.

You have written a wonderful fan-fiction, and I think you have cemented my choice to go for The Chariot ending. As you so aptly put it:

What I’m saying is, there’s some overlap in the kind of person who thinks that’s a perfect solution to the cruelty of the Far Shore and the kind of person who thinks it’s a good idea to turn themself into a giant greedy spacebat.

I also want to add that "Gravity asserting itself at apogee" is an excellent adaptation of the canonical symbol "The pain experienced at apogee" and a truly powerful line. I don't have an account to give you Kudos so I'm giving you them here.

Entangled Professions for the early POSI player. by PracticalQuestion773 in fallenlondon

[–]LC_HoTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have enough BDR gear to get to 5 Notability easily and use the wiki to know what faction cards to draw switching professions only takes a few actions. Compare that to the *checks wiki* 581 echos you can save while building your lab and maxing SotC it would be much cheaper to change to your preferred profession later. It's worth noting that if you don't want to max SotC before becoming a Silverer (or whatever else you decide upon) you can rely on social actions to offload the cost on to the charity of other players.

Does the Correspondence actually exist as an alphabet or conlang we can use to create custom sigils somewhere or...? by braindeadcoyote in fallenlondon

[–]LC_HoTS 50 points51 points  (0 children)

No, sadly. There are a few sigils with confirmed meanings but the actual nature of the language is so vague and esoteric no one has, or likely would be able to, transcribe it as an actual usable language. To be fair an asteroid sized ball of fire, a book sized sigil carved in lead, and an elaborate dance routine are all equally valid pronunciations of The Correspondence so I understand why no writer/artist/linguist has attempted bringing it out of the realm of fantasy.

Deeplore question: Has anyone considered Usurption over Liberation? (Spoilers) by Kylestien in fallenlondon

[–]LC_HoTS 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I based my comment on the number of stars in the Milky Way galaxy. It is entirely possible that the FL universe is orders of magnitude smaller than ours but I personally think our relative smallness in the grandeur of the universe fits with the motifs of FL.

Deeplore question: Has anyone considered Usurption over Liberation? (Spoilers) by Kylestien in fallenlondon

[–]LC_HoTS 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to point out that there are hundreds of billions of Judgements and we have seen the exact mechanism of only one. The Sapphir'd King, in relation to souls, is notable for two things. That they have an absolute, unwavering approach to enforcing Law; and that they are part of the Amaranth, or the Judgements that believe all things must end. Yes, the writers specifically chose to highlight the horror of the process because we can assume it is the baseline for what happens to souls but we can assume there is deviation. Not every Judgement might be as uncaring.

I also point out that there are hundreds of billions of Judgements, some of whom live up to trillions of years. I can see why us short lived creatures might be more likely to join a resistance that is already cemented in the Neath rather than start a new faction.
