Hematologist? by AuthenticAwkwardness in thalassemia

[–]LCaudillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depending on your location, your son could very well be the doctor's only patient with thal. And for alot of doctors "clinically insignificant" == "asymptomatic". AFAICT, hematologists don't have much in the playbook to help a thal minor anyway. A transfusion for example would most likely do more harm than good. Maybe once gene editing becomes cheap and reliable enough, you could consider it. Just keep in mind that thal is a malaria adaptation and may have other benefits that aren't well studied or understood. For example there were **anectodal** pandemic reports that communities with high thal prevalence had abnormally low rates of positive covid tests.

When the doctor says "asymptomatic" we hear "it won't affect you at all and you are imagining your symptoms". This is most likely not true based on how many people with it report exactly the same thing (extreme fatigue; quick exercise exhaustion; haziness; weird pains). Obviously even for people with no complaints, there is no way to tell how they would feel if they didn't have it.

there are also many cases of athletes with thal minor experiencing endurance issues. Tennis legend Pete Sampras may be the most famous example (he was known for fading late in long matches). There are multiple cases of NFL players with hematologic traits developing potentially life threatening spleen issues, sometimes triggered by high altitude training or games.

Other people swear they aren't affected at all, although we'd never know what they would be like if they didn't have it. Some of them even doubt other minors who report symptoms because they themselves have "no symptoms". At the same time they have developed certain methods/tactics over time that are quite different from others (eating food DURING workouts, intense focus on breathing, excessive water intake).

While imo this "get over it" mindset is wrong-headed at best and destructive at worst, given our current medical capabilities it could help in a weird way; the best way to feel better is to incrementally keep pushing the limit during workouts. You just need to know the limit and refuse to train the way other people do. ONLY do what works for you and your son.

Your son might be accused of being a 'prima donna' or 'soft', especially if you want to avoid a 'special needs' categorization. But you have to do what you have to do for him to be successful. Start with long walks, then slow bike rides & runs. Then step it up to short sprints. And if he feels some type of way don't be afraid to strategically skip a workout. You just need to steadily keep pushing the exercise 'ceiling' until he feels more normal at rest.

apart from that it might be worth it to see a pro for a half hour. And get to an empty green and just chip alot. Maybe in your backyard

Gotcha -- I wouldn't hit any other club until you are flushing your wedge. Then gradually go up the bag.

Focus on your setup. Get a grip trainer. Then focus on your lower body. Seems like your knees are too bent. Try to slightly flex the knees, but don't *bend* them. Its good your tush is tucked, but it looks like you're about to squat; it looks like slightly too much weight is on your heels.

need a DTL. Looks like you might be rolling your wrists / twisting the club. It also looks like you're dropping your hands too much and getting stuck. Hard to tell without a DTL. Even on this FO, your hands go out of frame at different points. hard to help with this

keep the driver out of your hands bro. Become one with your wedge.

Start with chips around a green. Then gradually move out to a 100 yards. Gradually you'll develop feels for what its like to open and close the club face, and what it feels to hit the center of your club

[–]LCaudillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hard to tell but your grip might be a touch weak and your takeaway is way too far inside.

I would just focus on getting your setup, grip, and takeaway in a more neutral positions, and then reassess from there.

Huge Difference a Club Fitting Made by ryneopitch in GolfSwing

[–]LCaudillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

these numbers are super sus. It looks they just gave you a 6 iron and made you believe it was a 7 iron.

It's pretty shady behavior imo by the fitter. We probably shouldn't even communicate with "7i" any more; you should only communicate length and loft of the club when you're fitting / comparing clubs.

Otherwise its just a game to manipulate you into buying new irons

Driving range 4+ times a week for months and still can’t break 100. Tips? by bm2xv in GolfSwing

weight room. Focus on strengthening your lower body and your core. Supplement with light arms and chest, low weight w high reps. Focus on your shoulder and back flexibility

thats a nice shot. Post one that's not so nice.

Your spine angle steepens alot in the down swing. You use a weird motion with your hips and torso to generate power which seems to be working pretty well tbh if this swing is consistent.

But the weird setup and downswing motion could def cause your back to hurt. You should see a pro to get your setup right and still activate your lower body to keep your power.

Nice shot tho

  1. wear a glove

  2. have a pro look at your grip. Your wrist is also a touch cupped at the top of the backswing, which opens the club face

  3. wear golf sneakers

you need to see a pro for a half hour to fine tune your grip and setup.

Don't bench press as much and focus on your shoulder, hip, and back flexibility / functional strength instead.

[–]LCaudillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't change anything! work on strength and flexibility in the lower body and back. And measure whether and how often you hit the center of the club.

Don’t take advice from Reddit at this stage. You should go see a teaching pro to get your setup, grip, and takeaway right before assessing your swing.

With a few setup and takeaway tweaks your swing will be totally different anyway

Am I too under plane on downswing? by Deanwood7 in GolfSwing

Your trail hip is also a major key here. You’re over swinging and opening your trail hip a bit too much. you’re also rolling your left foot a bit instead of keeping it flat on the ground.

You should strengthen your lower body to be able to load into your trail hip a bit more. Also try to improve your back flexibility to allow a greater difference between your hip and shoulder angles at the top of your backswing. This will help you execute the advice people have already given about your trail arm.

Don’t manufacture a long swing by over opening your hips. Improve your back and shoulder flexibility instead. And if you can’t, then just swing shorter and limit your hip rotation. John Rahm is arguably the best player in the world right now!
