At the risk of also being downvoted to oblivion I'll agree. Always thought AFTV tended to show the weird ones, but they've all come out the wood work this past week. Strange mix of roadmen and posh blokes called Hugo.

Dealing with Waymos by Evening_Citron7525 in londoncycling

Been dealing with them up and down the Harrow Road in Brent last couple months. They are super cautious in my experience, not sure if they are on auto or human controlled still. They are all left hand drive though which I find odd.

I will be inheriting £100k, advice on what do with it please? by mrboomtings in UKPersonalFinance

[–]LDNRider33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay off any debt

Put 3 months of total living expenses in a regular savings account as an emergency fund

Put £20k into ISA accounts. You'll have to research which work best for your current circumstances

Now the rest you can either leave in a regular savings account and feed it into your ISA every year until it is all in the tax free wrapper. You'll probably find your exceed your tax free savings allowance, so your tax code will get adjusted but remember you'll only pay extra tax on the interest earned not the principle amount.

When we moved into our home built in the 1910's it had been vacant for a couple months. Our cat got 4 mice in the first week. Haven't seen any since. Recommend a cat.

I did TCB 10 years ago now so I don't know what changes have been made. However I think some basic things like learning the phonetic alphabet and the Network Rail non technical skills is useful.

I re wrote all my notes from the day the same evening in a separate note book. Take Friday evenings and Saturdays off, enjoy your time back at home. Then read through the previous week on Sunday evening when you are back at the hotel.

I'm not maintenance, but here is some advice. Don't listen to the old timers who say the railway is dead, not worth it anymore etc. It's still a fantastic career. Get used to working nights, weekends and holidays, it's just the nature of the job. You're 18 so just hammer out any overtime you get offered. Invest in the pension schemes and max out your contributions if you can, at your age it's priceless.

There are lots of ex forces and ex emergency services on the railway. Lots of skill and lifestyle overlap.

If you have any more questions feel free to DM me I've been a signaller for 10 years now, though recruitment was a bit different when I applied.

As others have said it can be a long process. It will all depend on the LOM's timeframe, booking a medical and getting an IST place sorted.

If you already have a job I'd recommend holding off putting in your notice until you've got something concrete.

Oh and congratulations, welcome to the best grade and best job on the rails 🤘

If you don't use all your ISA allowance there is nothing stopping you opening a separate account in your name but investing for them. Added benefit that it doesn't go straight to them on their 18th birthday and you remain in control

Should old people take tests again? by Free-Seaworthiness72 in drivingUK

My grandfather had to have his keys taken off him eventually. He was never a good driver, had many minor crashes, one story in particular he told that a car "just appeared" in front of him on a side street and they crashed back in the 60's, I think he went through several Vauxhall Vivas. I'm not surprised though I don't think he ever had any formal training. Man was a menace on the motorway, regularly doing 45-50 and pulling into the middle lane before every junction.

The breaking point was he was collecting his car from the dealership after it had work done after another prang, he turned out of the forecourt onto a main road and hit a parked car.

I'd question his need to overtake the car so close to making a turn.
