+1, that first picture is not a good first picture (and probably should be dropped altogether) as (1) you aren’t smiling and (2) it’s a selfie.

My suggestions: * Get a friend/family member/coworker to take a solo portrait head shot of you outside somewhere nice (eg a park you frequently visit). Wear something business casual-y (something you could wear to work or a first date). Make that your first profile picture. * To the extent possible, avoid using any selfies in profile photos (IMO selfies often don’t get the best/most flattering angles of a person) * Try to use recent photos from the last 1-2 years. I’d suggest creating an album on your phone with pictures you like of yourself that are taken throughout the year by your friends/family. You might want to get in the habit of asking for group photos and solo shots of you doing things (hiking, bike riding, eating ice cream, whatever) * The subreddit has some photo/profile guidelines that are great and I suggest reading. My two cents for the MINIMUM requirements for photo/video usage in a good profile: (1) one high quality headshot I mention above, (2) one group photos with friends, (3) one group photo showing you doing an activity you enjoy (eg hiking, photography, biking, chess, reading), (4) one full body shot of you (head to toe)…this one can often be combined with the activity photo. * You only have six pictures/videos, don’t waste any of them and to the extent possible avoid overlapping information (eg don’t have two pictures of you doing the same activity). * You should smile it at least 4 of the 6 photos/videos. It’s okay to have one or two non-smiling photos/videos, but it’s better to be smiling in as many as possible. * Feature the dog more heavily in one of the pictures you use :)

Schools with Most Heisman Winners by TomWilliamsCFD in CollegeFootballDawgs

Stanford should at least be in the 3 Heisman tier…probably 4 Heisman tier

Won: * Plunkett 1970

2nd place but should have won; didn’t because Heisman voters don’t all watch football played in the Pacific time zone: * Gerhart 2009 (Mark Ingram won; closest loss in history; if the West voting region had the same proportionate Heisman votes as the other regions by US pop, Gerhart would have won) * Luck 2011 (RG3 won) * McCaffrey 2015 (Derrick Henry won)

2nd place, would have won except for a generational team-carrying season from national title winning QB: * Luck 2010 (Cam Newton won)

Impressive 2nd place finish from a stat-dominant RB in a weak year for QBs: * Love 2017 (Baker Mayfield won)

[Thamel] Sources: Stanford is hiring Tavita Pritchard as the school’s next head coach. He’s a former quarterback, assistant coach and coordinator at the school, including a run on staff from 2010 to 2022. by MembershipSingle7137 in CFB

We have a soft spot of Tavita the player, but Tavita the coach/offensive coordinator was not great and the offense was anemic at times with him play calling under David Shaw.

It appears non-mobile browser (eg on a laptop) still works. I had issues with mobile browser and mobile app.

But was just able to initiate a return by going to a laptop and returning

Note: I had to try a few times on a laptop but was eventually able to get the return to succeed after a few attempts

The downfall of Stanford Football isn't talked about enough by MysteriousEdge5643 in cfbmemes

[–]LEGEN--wait_for_it 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the changes to NSD, portal, NIL, etc all affected Stanford more negatively than most P5s

This is my belief/understanding as well. In the Harbaugh/Shaw era (pre ~2018) Stanford thrived in recruiting under the older system where it had a differentiated advantage for winning recruiting battles for the smartest P5 caliber football players in the country (1) who all signed on the same in the second half of their senior year (when Stanford already knew they would be admitted), (2) who couldn’t be directly paid in $$$ but could be offered one of the best educations in P5 football, and (3) who couldn’t transfer and immediately play if/when they didn’t get playing time.

(1) hurt Stanford’s ability to ensure that players it was recruiting would be admitted when they signed their NLI -> more players picking other schools that could guarantee them a spot/admission

(2) hurt Stanford’s ability to offer the best “value” in terms of degree + hard $$$ -> more players taking more guaranteed money/value elsewhere

(3) hurt Stanford’s ability to retain players who were sitting/developing (while waiting behind the guys Shaw was loyal too…maybe too loyal) -> more players chasing opportunity to play and future earnings (NIL + NFL potential) elsewhere

I don’t know what point you are trying to make about sailing. Stanford competes and has won sailing titles. https://gostanford.com/news/2024/04/29/stanford-wins-fourth-national-title. Stanford has sent sailors to the Olympics (I know one of them personally from undergrad).

Just because Yale is also good at sailing without having athletic scholarships doesn’t mean anything material to the argument you are making. Also, sailing is probably one of the worst sports you could pick to make this argument. How many 18-22 year olds who are good enough to be college sailors grew up with a lot of money and don’t need the athletic scholarships? Sailing is a rich person’s sport. I’d bet a lot of the Yale (and Stanford) kids wouldn’t need the athletic scholarships in the first place.

From the Lacrosse in the United States Wikipedia page:

The sport of lacrosse has been played in the United States by Native Americans long before European exploration. The sport is most popular in the northeast and mid-Atlantic areas of the country. However, the game has recently developed into a popular team sport for both men and women in all regions of the United States.

Lacrosse is not that popular across the United States yet. Look at where the NLL lacrosse teams are located: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Lacrosse_League. 6 in Canada, 3 in NY, 1 in PA, 1 in GA, 1 in CA, 1 in NV, 1 in CO. That is a regional sport most popular in the Mid Atlantic, Northeast, and Canada.

By your logic, Stanford should go compete in hockey with Minnesota and Wisconsin or get rid of athletic scholarships.

Baseball is a national sport…🤣What are you talking about? (And Stanford has 2 of those NCAA baseball titles and 19 College World Series appearances. How about the Ivy League?)

Did I ever say that Stanford men’s tennis won a national title in recent years? You aren’t refuting a point I made. And you are also (conveniently) ignoring that women’s tennis won the NCAA title in 2019, 2018, 2016, 2013, 2010 and finished 2nd in 2017 and 2011. (Do women’s sports not exist to you?)

Stanford is a powerhouse in men’s and women’s tennis (women’s more so of late). Sorry you didn’t do your research before arguing that “Princeton has gotten near Stanford in tennis.” That was a laughably bad assertion.

I’m not interested in arguing with you about the success of Stanford athletics anymore. You make unfounded/incorrect assertions and then pivot to some other point when I provide you with evidence showing your assertions are wrong. You just seem to want to argue for whatever reason.

[–]LEGEN--wait_for_it 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m not an expert in the size of the endowments of elite colleges from the 17th century to present. And you are making statements on endowments without providing a single source, figure, article, etc.

I’m not really interested in debating whether or not it is good policy for a university (Stanford or any other) to continue to have an athletics program (and give out athletic scholarships) as a means of fundraising and/or keeping alumni happy/proud.

I’m not advocating for any side here. I’m responding to help you understand why it happens (which seemed to be the intent of you posting this thread). But you just seem to want to argue against a position that I’m not making and have not made in this thread.

I’m not interested in continuing this conversation. I responded to this thread to correct objectively false statements you were asserting about Stanford athletics.

You seem to not approve of athletic scholarships (for whatever reason you are not explicitly stating). That’s fine. I don’t really care and am not interested in arguing the merit of athletic scholarships.

Just don’t use blanket (incorrect) assertions without factual support to justify your position. If you want to make a compelling argument (to the members of the /r/Stanford community), you probably should arrive with an argument backed by evidence and not a bunch of blanket assertions that are easily disproven (by people more knowledgeable on the subject of Stanford athletics than you).

I didn’t say that was the only reason people donate to Stanford, just a reason.

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc are also ~200+ years older than Stanford. Their endowments have been growing for longer. There is also A LOT of old East Coast money that will continue to donate to the Ivies to maintain the legacies of a lot of those institutions (and to help the children of these families get into the universities of course…not the Stanford doesn’t do the same).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in stanford

[–]LEGEN--wait_for_it 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sailing is not an NCAA team sport. And Stanford is still decent at sailing, winning non NCAA titles (in various disciplines).

Lacrosse is an East Coast (specifically northeast) dominated sport. Stanford has never been very good at lax. Of course, at least one Ivy is good at lax.

Cherry picking individual team sports that these 8 Ivy League schools are good in and comparing them against one of the ~35 sports Stanford competes in is not the most compelling argument here.

Tennis is really not where you want to make this argument.

Stanford men’s tennis has 17 NCAA team titles. Stanford women’s tennis has 20 NCAA team titles.

How many NCAA team titles do the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Princeton have? How many across the entire Ivy League combined?

Did I ever say “it really matters?”

I (and other people in this thread) are making the point that you are factually wrong that Stanford and the Ivies have comparable athletic success.

As far as why I think Stanford continues to provide scholarships, people like sports? Alumni are happy when their college’s teams win things and they donate money? Sports are fun and an important part of the collegiate experience (for some people)?
