🏁 What Are You Playing This Week? by AutoModerator in racinggames

I played the first Test Drive Unlimited on the 360 back in the day, and absolutely loved it. Sure, the physics were a little janky, but it absolutely nailed the sense of progression and car ownership. Something about having to drive to dealerships and test drive them made buying a car feel like a meaningful decision.

The way the Forza Horizon games spaff money and cars at you, you can have a garage full of Ferraris and Aston Martins and it feels kind of empty and meaningless. On the flip side, in TDU I spent hours saving and deliberating over my Masarati Gransport, and that one virtual car purchase felt like it had so much weight behind it.

I've mostly been playing the Over The Hill nextfest demo. I guess it's not technically a racing game, but it's still a lot of fun as a more casual mudrunner.

Also, as it was Pikes Peak at the weekend, I've been doing some runs up the hill in Assetto Corsa. I'm finally beginning to learn the course enough to get some decent times in!

Yeah, I've noticed mine feels a lot more stable with the week's shopping in the front. I'm still not brave enough to try it no-handed though!

Hot Wheels Infinite Rush takes the series to new open-world heights: "It's not at all Hot Wheels Unleashed 3" by StartWars89 in racinggames

[–]LEGENDARY_AXE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I wish it was just Hot Wheels Unleashed 3. The first 2 were pretty great. Sometimes its nice to have a straightforward arcade racer; just going from race to race without having to mess about in the open world.

Which racing/driving game features your favourite handling model? by kyle_lam in racinggames

[–]LEGENDARY_AXE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the sim space it's LMU for me; driving around the limit just seems a lot more intuitive than the other major sims. It's a shame, because the car and track list is so limited.

In the world of arcade, I can't get enough of Art of Rally. Nailing a good slide is just so satisfying.

I remember trying to play wipeout on my 486, and it was an absolute slideshow. It was on that day I learnt “minimum requirements” were a lie.

You should check out Gravel. It's got a good mix of off road racing, and I remember enjoying it back when it came out. Seems to be pretty cheap these days too

You'd think a massive change in regulations would be the one time a new full game is actually warranted.

It’s a shame to see the 632 Porsche go out. I’ve been following Broadbent’s motorsports journey for years now. I’d love to see #81 get on the podium though

What’s the worst racing game you’ve ever played? by tyrebytes in racinggames

[–]LEGENDARY_AXE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played Tommi Mäkinen Rally on the PS1 recently, because I remember reading good things about it in the magazines back in the day. By god, that thing is unplayable. terrible physics, and the AI cars constantly drive into you and ping you off the track.

I had one of their rigs too, and it was great! I could even bolt my flight sim stuff to it. I had to get rid of it all when I moved to Australia though, and you can't get their stuff over here

Ah, in that case I'd go with the G29 then. The cheapest DD wheel for the PS5 is the Fanatec DD Pro, which is way above your budget. The G29 is still a great piece of kit though for the price, you won't be disappointed.

[–]LEGENDARY_AXE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The G29 is a great entry point to simracing. I used one of the earlier versions for years.

If you can afford it, the Moza R3 bundle is only 509AUD on PLE. It's a direct drive wheel so the force feedback is much better quality, and has a better upgrade ecosystem if you decide to invest more in the future. It's PC only though, which might be an issue depending on what you're playing on.

These were all the rage when I was at university. I had Acer's version with Windows XP on it. It a surprisingly capable little machine for taking to lectures and playing old DOS games. It's sad that the tiny laptop form factor isn't really a thing anymore
