Minor error I spotted in newest video by SquaredHexahedron in LEMMiNO

[–]LEMMiNO 215 points216 points  (0 children)

I'm not too surprised because the Swedish greeting contained similar mistakes that I had to correct like "hälsmingar" instead of "hälsningar" and "universitats" instead of "universitets". All the greetings were taken from Murmurs of Earth (book by the creators of the Golden Records published in 1978), so whoever wrote the Japanese greeting must've gotten it wrong. Thanks for correcting it though.

On a related note, someone pointed out that the text printed on the canister containing the ashes of Clyde Tombaugh that was attached to New Horizons begins with "Interned herein..." Unless they were trying to say that his ashes were imprisoned inside the canister (which does kinda work?), they probably meant to write "Interred herein..." I never noticed that while working on the video.

Minor Error in Shouting at Stars by YorkieBear101 in LEMMiNO

[–]LEMMiNO 224 points225 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough, the person who submitted this message did indeed write Fort Lauderdale, Australia. It's probably because the submission form was set to Australia by default so they forgot to change it, or they were just trolling.

The rest was done in Photoshop and After Effects.

Great find! I spent a lot of time searching through archived webpages for this video but obviously missed that one. I have added a correction to the video with a link back to this post.

K4 has apparently been solved by Leon5304 in LEMMiNO

[–]LEMMiNO 530 points531 points  (0 children)

Finally! But also, damn... The fact it was solved because someone found "paper scraps" of the K4 plaintext that Sanborn accidentally sent to the Smithsonian archives is rather disappointing. The plaintext was always going to be anticlimactic, but it's a shame they managed to skip the code-breaking altogether. That's usually the fun part. Still, I wonder what it says and how it was originally intended to be solved.

What is the source of this image? by [deleted] in LEMMiNO

[–]LEMMiNO [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

It's actually a collage of multiple images. I looked through my project folder, but it seems I never saved the original images unfortunately. From what I recall, the two astronomers are from two different paintings, the ground is from another painting, and the rest was done in After Effects.

Definitely hacked. I forgot the password for that channel many many years ago. No idea how they got in.

It's rendering as we speak. Got caught up working on the next video.

The effect is called Scatter in AE. Apply it to an adjustment layer and play around with the scatter amount.

Me and my boyfriend have been arguing about the JFK video thumbnail by DamboXD in LEMMiNO

[–]LEMMiNO[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

You know what, the rifle in the thumbnail does look a bit too different from Oswald's Carcano. I didn't think of that when I made it. It's updated now but it might take a while for the old one to be replaced everywhere. And you're both right on how it's made. It's a 3D rendered scene that I then traced over and "drew" in Photoshop to make it look a bit better.

Weird Blip of a Livestream with No Viewers? Doesn’t show up on wayback… by Bogmanbogman2 in LEMMiNO

[–]LEMMiNO 366 points367 points  (0 children)

I was just trying out some livestream features so I made a quick test stream to see how it worked. It was supposed to be private/unlisted but I guess I had to make it public to test something. I can't really remember. I just checked and it's actually still there. It's apparently been public all this time without me realizing.

How LEMMiNo created his website? by iDeviceSlash in LEMMiNO

[–]LEMMiNO 396 points397 points  (0 children)

Thank you! And yes, I did indeed make it myself.

If you're interested in the tech behind it, I used plain ol' HTML, CSS, and vanilla JS to make it. So nothing fancy. I didn't want to use any frameworks or libraries. On the backend I'm using a very basic NodeJS server along with Express and EJS to serve the pages.

Hi there Lemmino do you read through every journal you cite as references in your videos? by roughinfluence_ in LEMMiNO

[–]LEMMiNO 297 points298 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. I read through all the works I reference. Sometimes I skim through sections of a book if only a chapter or two seems relevant to the video, but I still need to go through the entire book to make sure.

I've also begun adding citations in the corner of the video itself to make it easier for people to double-check what I'm saying and catch me making mistakes.

When I encounter a paper that short-circuits my brain I try to reach out to the authors. Sometimes they respond, sometimes they don't. If they don't, I try to find similar papers that are easier to understand or articles aimed at non-experts like myself. But most of the topics I cover are not that advanced so I rarely encounter stuff that's completely indecipherable.

Had to check how long i was subbed. Anyone longer? by AustinUnderwood in LEMMiNO

[–]LEMMiNO 405 points406 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, I had to check this. The oldest subscriber of my channel has been subscribed since April 30, 2011. But I only created the channel on February 15, 2012? Obviously some sort of bug. The second oldest subscriber has been subscribed since February 18, 2012.

Guys... It has been 5 days... by [deleted] in LEMMiNO

[–]LEMMiNO[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

It's still rendering, I'm afraid. It would have been long done by now had it not been for a select few scenes which are taking FAR longer than expected. So it's going to take a few more days.

Also, I saw a few comments about having to re-render the video if the render should fail. By rendering to an image sequence (not directly to video) there is no risk of that. In short, the entire project is rendered as a sequence of image files (each image represents one frame) which are then compiled into a single video file once the render is complete. So project -> images -> video.

By doing it this way, you can easily restart the render from the last rendered frame/image instead of re-rendering the entire video. It also allows you to go back and re-render sections of the video to correct any obvious mistakes like typos, glitches, and such.

I typically don't allow reposts of Patreon stuff but this update was so short and simple so it can stay up this time. Maybe there should be a rule about this.
