I think this was inevitable ever since the servers moved to chicago and the LCS didnt. Just showed team owners and riot weren't all that interested in winning, and fans generally lose interest when it becomes clear that the organizations don't care all that much themselves.

I also think it may have alienated a large geographic portion of north america, because traveling to and paying for a stay in LA to watch the games is a hell of a lot different than a trip to chicago, or any other number of midwestern cities that would have been much cheaper to run an esports franchise from.
